Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Unplanned Journey relates the adventures of my walk on the Cancer road. It stresses the lessons that Cancer taught me. It tells the reader about my fears and my struggles in dealing with Cancer - the acceptance of having the disease, the surgeries, and its treatments. This book is written in an effort to assure any woman or man with Cancer that there is an end to the long journey. My readers should be assured that they are not alone. Today most Cancers are curable if they can be found early. Happiness and normal life will return again at the end of the journey. Book Review: Breast Cancer The Unplanned Journey Lessons Learned By Beverly Stacy Dittmer Reviewed by Mary Ann Noonan Breast Cancer The Unplanned Journey Lessons Learned, is the very personal journal of Beverly Stacy Dittmer's passage from finding a lump in her breast, through her anxious wait for the confirmed diagnosis of breast cancer that every woman dreads to hear, through her one step at a time trek from surgery through treatment and complications, and, finally, to a realization that life goes on and can become normal again. Beverly as a daughter, a sister, a wife, a mother, a grandmother, a friend, and a professional woman shares critical, yet sensitive, information about her diagnosis of breast cancer and its treatment. She makes it quite clear in the copyright page that "the medical statements in this book are only what I understood and are not to be taken as true medical facts," continuing that her knowledge about breast cancer was obtained in years 2003 and 2004. In addition, she includes a personal touch to her 222 page manuscript describing many relationships and human interest stories about life with her husband, her family, her friends, her personal activities, and travels. The reader follows Beverly as she relates her cancer journey one step at a time-the good times and the bad. In a detailed, remarkably sensitive, casual, almost speaking to the audience style, Dittmer writes about everyday life while facing a life threatening condition. She shares words of advice and reminders about living each day with confidence and courage that there is light at the end of the tunnel while including "lessons learned" in the last four pages. Encouragement is granted to the reader by the author's constructive council that "there is an end to this long journey." Through her direct and candid accounts it was obvious that she was not alone in this walk. As a professional nurse practitioner and retired professor of nursing, reading Beverly Stacy Dittmer's personal story reinforces the importance for health care providers to listen and to be present to all individuals for whom they care. For the person with a life-threatening illness, this read will provide a source of strength and encouragement. For the student of nursing and medicine it is a must read.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to the Centers for Disease Control, 20.3 million Americans have been diagnosed with cancer. There is a high probability that either you or someone very close to you are or will be afflicted with a form of this disease. What can you do? Will you withdraw, quietly accept your fate, and passively accept protocols of treatment? Or, will you seize the moment, the lessons to be learned, the opportunities which will open, and the purposes that will be plentiful? This book champions the latter response—from the transparent and personal perspectives of both a patient and a caregiver who have endured four diagnoses of cancer, multiple chemotherapy treatments, a stem cell transplant, and are currently enrolled in a clinical trial with 300 other relapsed cancer patients. The title Don’t Drop the Mic! implores the cancer patient to clear away the clutter of destructive emotions and responses to the unwelcomed affliction, and instead, with a clear and focused mind… ● Learn lessons that bring fresh insights to life and can be shared with others—both those with cancer and who experience other forms of suffering! ● Boldly engage and make the most of opportunities which open alongside of the cancer! ● Find and pursue new and invigorating purposes as you pioneer personal paths you never before expected to travel. Lessons learned, opportunities opened, purposes to be pursued. These are unexpected joys, responsibilities, and holy Callings given to us by our Lord Jesus in our sufferings. Jesus also gives us a mic, an unexpected audience, more-than-sufficient grace and strength, and then says to us, “The world is listening; what are you going to say? Don’t drop the mic!”

Book excerpt: We find in poetry a deep expressing sensation of reality through feeling that we may have to look back on the past, where others sought great vision to express the future. The Joy in the Morning is written on behalf of my Lord, my God and the Savior of my life. I want everyone possible to know that Jesus Christ lives in my heart today. I must share and present in spiritual form my poetry. Some may never find the joy that I now possess, but it's free to those who seek inspiration and the freedom that brings you personal happiness today. Sharing with others is a joy unto itself. On my journey through this life, I gain spiritual knowledge now and am able to share this wonderful feeling in preaching, and in sharing my poetry to many people who would never experience the joy of salvation otherwise.

It is about the fear, hope, and intensity of their lives during the thirty-two months that followed Joan's cancer diagnosis and how Joan and her husband and children maintained their family life during this time. It is about some of the funny, moving and courageous things that happened along the way. And it is about what they did to access compassionate, state-of-the-art care, including aggressive interventions that provided hope and improved the quality of Joan's life. Lessons from Joan is not intended as a "how-to" book, but within its pages readers will find lessons and practical advice about how to deal with unexpected life-threatening illnesses.

Book excerpt: An unprecedented constellation of experts—leading cancer doctors, policymakers, cutting-edge researchers, national advocates, and more—explore the legacy and the shortcomings from the fifty-year war on cancer and look ahead to the future. The longest war in the modern era, longer than the Cold War, has been the war on cancer. Cancer is a complex, evasive enemy, and there was no quick victory in the fight against it. But the battle has been a monumental test of medical and scientific research and fundraising acumen, as well as a moral and ethical challenge to the entire system of medicine. In A New Deal for Cancer, some of today’s leading thinkers, activists, and medical visionaries describe the many successes in the long war and the ways in which our deeper failings as a society have held us back from a more complete success. Together they present an unrivaled and nearly complete map of the battlefield across dimensions of science, government, equity, business, the patient provider experience, and more, documenting our emerging understanding of cancer’s many unique dimensions and offering bold new plans to enable the American health care system to deliver progress and hope to all patients.

During her first, routine colonoscopy—without having experienced any symptoms—Kelley received a shocking diagnosis: colon cancer. Based on the true story of her subsequent cancer journey, A Way Back to Health reveals how surprising lessons paved the way for her recovery, shares helpful action steps for those who find themselves in a similar situation, and illuminates how personal stories can powerfully motivate and heal. In addition to telling her own story, Kelley also features examples of how other, amazing survivors have learned to manage, survive and thrive in the face of cancer. She also explores how often overlooked actions, such as trusting your instincts, speaking up, getting a second opinion, and watching for miracles, can have a profound impact on recovery—lessons meant to help patients advocate for themselves and help friends, family, and caregivers as they wrestle with cancer and its treatment. Much more prevalent than COVID-19, cancer will affect one in three people directly, and many more indirectly, in their lifetime. A Way Back to Health, with its real-life stories and unexpected lessons, is a helpful and relatable guide to the most important information you need to know about cancer—for the time you need it most.

Each generation from the eight young grandchildren, to the adult children, to the wife adds insights to waging war against the collateral damage of cancer. Is it possible to experience hope? ¿find relief? ¿even laugh? With poignant honesty Elaine reveals the pain, love, and laughter they shared, and the lessons they learned through the crisis they faced. Fractured prayers brought insights on how to communicate, understand family members¿ reactions, help each other, encourage the young children, make decisions, and fortify faith in their battle with cancer. Together they grew stronger as a family. Individually, they experienced the reality of God¿s promises.

Book excerpt: The New York Times–bestselling author and cancer survivor tells how to hold on to joy in times of sorrow in this “absolutely beautiful book” (Sue Monk Kidd). The prize-winning author of such modern literary classics as Practical Magic, The World That We Knew, and The Marriage of Opposites, Alice Hoffman is also a cancer survivor. In Survival Lessons, she shares her transformative journey, showing us how to re-envision our own lives and relationships with our friends and family, and the significance of the everyday choices we make. Sorrow and joy are both part of the human experience, and the beauty of the world is easy to overlook during periods of crisis, illness, or loss. Here, Hoffman offers wit, wisdom, and comfort in “an optimistic instruction manual [for] anyone struggling with self-care in a time of trouble” (Story Circle Book Reviews). “In this gem of a book, Alice Hoffman acknowledges the sorrows of life, while reminding us of its joys. Survival Lessons is filled with love, insight, and lots of practical advice—including a crazy-good brownie recipe.” —Will Schwalbe, New York Times–bestselling author of The End of Your Life Book Club “Hoffman’s storytelling artistry enlivens each intimate, thoughtfully distilled, charming, and nurturing lesson in living.” —Booklist “[Survival Lessons] is not about [Hoffman’s] breast cancer per se but about making choices that will improve readers’ lives and relationships and remind them ‘of the beauty of life.’” —Library Journal “Full of smart intentions and kind reminders . . . Uplifting advice we’ll gladly take.” —Better Homes & Gardens
