Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lessons in Elementary Dynamics It seems to be pretty generally agreed that some branch of Physics should form an early, if not the very earliest part of a scientific education, involving, as it does, an examination of those general and fundamental properties which all kinds of matter possess to a greater or less extent and by which we recognise things as being forms of matter. Of the various branches into which Physics is divided. Mechanics has an undoubted claim to the first place, from the simplicity and exactness of its laws, the readiness with which they can be demonstrated, and the multitude of practical illustrations of them which meet us on every side in the ordinary movements of life, in games, and in work. The study of Chemistry or of Electricity may be more amusing and attractive on account of the brilliant experiments associated with it, but the exact explanation of chemical and electrical phenomena is far less easy and far less certain than that of mechanical laws, and is, indeed, hardly within the grasp of minds previously untrained in scientific methods and ideas. An endeavour is made in this book to explain some of the properties of matter, Newtons Laws of Motion, and the modern conceptions of Energy and Work, in such a manner as involves only the most elementary knowledge of mathematics. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Classical Dynamics of Particles and Systems presents a modern and reasonably complete account of the classical mechanics of particles, systems of particles, and rigid bodies for physics students at the advanced undergraduate level. The book aims to present a modern treatment of classical mechanical systems in such a way that the transition to the quantum theory of physics can be made with the least possible difficulty; to acquaint the student with new mathematical techniques and provide sufficient practice in solving problems; and to impart to the student some degree of sophistication in handling both the formalism of the theory and the operational technique of problem solving. Vector methods are developed in the first two chapters and are used throughout the book. Other chapters cover the fundamentals of Newtonian mechanics, the special theory of relativity, gravitational attraction and potentials, oscillatory motion, Lagrangian and Hamiltonian dynamics, central-force motion, two-particle collisions, and the wave equation.

Book excerpt: Classical dynamics is traditionally treated as an early stage in the development of physics, a stage that has long been superseded by more ambitious theories. Here, in this book, classical dynamics is treated as a subject on its own as well as a research frontier. Incorporating insights gained over the past several decades, the essential principles of classical dynamics are presented, while demonstrating that a number of key results originally considered only in the context of quantum theory and particle physics, have their foundations in classical dynamics.Graduate students in physics and practicing physicists will welcome the present approach to classical dynamics that encompasses systems of particles, free and interacting fields, and coupled systems. Lie groups and Lie algebras are incorporated at a basic level and are used in describing space-time symmetry groups. There is an extensive discussion on constrained systems, Dirac brackets and their geometrical interpretation. The Lie-algebraic description of dynamical systems is discussed in detail, and Poisson brackets are developed as a realization of Lie brackets. Other topics include treatments of classical spin, elementary relativistic systems in the classical context, irreducible realizations of the Galileo and Poincaré groups, and hydrodynamics as a Galilean field theory. Students will also find that this approach that deals with problems of manifest covariance, the no-interaction theorem in Hamiltonian mechanics and the structure of action-at-a-distance theories provides all the essential preparatory groundwork for a passage to quantum field theory. This reprinting of the original text published in 1974 is a testimony to the vitality of the contents that has remained relevant over nearly half a century.
