Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lessons in Elementary Dynamics It seems to be pretty generally agreed that some branch of Physics should form an early, if not the very earliest part of a scientific education, involving, as it does, an examination of those general and fundamental properties which all kinds of matter possess to a greater or less extent and by which we recognise things as being forms of matter. Of the various branches into which Physics is divided. Mechanics has an undoubted claim to the first place, from the simplicity and exactness of its laws, the readiness with which they can be demonstrated, and the multitude of practical illustrations of them which meet us on every side in the ordinary movements of life, in games, and in work. The study of Chemistry or of Electricity may be more amusing and attractive on account of the brilliant experiments associated with it, but the exact explanation of chemical and electrical phenomena is far less easy and far less certain than that of mechanical laws, and is, indeed, hardly within the grasp of minds previously untrained in scientific methods and ideas. An endeavour is made in this book to explain some of the properties of matter, Newtons Laws of Motion, and the modern conceptions of Energy and Work, in such a manner as involves only the most elementary knowledge of mathematics. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Dynamics: A d104-Book for Engineers Those who have had experience in teaching elementary dynamics to students of Engineering will agree that the majority find considerable difficulty in grasping the fundamental principles on which the subject is based. There are new physical quantities to be understood, and new principles to be accepted which can only be expressed in terms of these quantities. Unfortunately, in many cases, this subject has to be introduced at a stage of development in mathematics at which the student expects some proof of what he is told to believe. He is not so prepared to accept things without proof as he was when first told that 2 x 3 = 6. Even at that early stage, probably an attempt was made to prove to him that 2 x 3 = 6, yet, in the end, he merely accepted the fact and memorised it. The author believes that the difficulty experienced is partly, though by no means entirely, due to the way the subject is often presented. In the student's mind it is associated with branches of pure mathematics such as trigonometry, analytical geometry, or infinitesimal calculus, and he is inclined to think that salvation lies in memorising a number of formulae which are to be used in solving problems, instead of looking upon dynamics as a fundamental branch of physical science, in which mathematics is of secondary importance and the physical ideas of primary importance. Quite commonly in elementary text-books, the second law of motion is at first summed up in the form, force = mass x acceleration, and the student is then given a number of examples to work out, most of which consist in substituting numbers in a formula. This very successfully disguises the true meaning of momentum, and the extraordinary generality of the second law of motion. The same applies to problems dealing with motion. The student is generally presented with certain formulae for motion involving a constant acceleration. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Brief Course in Elementary Dynamics The problems at the ends of various sections have been selected out of a card index which has been collected from various sources through a number of years. Few of them are original, but the sources from which they were obtained have been lost. The author is under deep obligation to his colleague Assistant Professor Arthur T. Jones who has read the entire proof and has pointed out several errors and rendered clear, many obscure passages. To Professor Jones is also due the entire section on wave motion. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dynamics: An Elementary Text-Book, Theoretical and Practical It has now come to be generally recognized that the most satisfactory method of teaching the Natural Sciences is by experiments which can be performed by the learners themselves. In consequence many teachers have arranged for their pupils courses of practical instruction designed to illustrate the fundamental principles of the subject they teach. The portions of the following book designated Experiments have for the most part been in use for some time as a Practical Course for Medical Students at the Cavendish Laboratory. The rest of the book contains the explanation of the theory of those experiments, and an account of the deductions from them. This part has grown out of my lectures to the same class. It has been my object in the lectures to avoid elaborate apparatus and to make the whole as simple as possible. Most of the lecture experiments are performed with the apparatus which is afterwards used by the class, and whenever it can be done the theoretical consequences are deduced from the results of these experiments. In order to deal with classes of considerable size it is necessary to multiply the apparatus to a large extent. The students usually work in pairs and each pair has a separate table. On this table are placed all the apparatus for the experiments which are to be performed. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on Elementary Dynamics In the following work I have attempted to write a fairly complete text-book on those parts of Dynamics which can be treated without the use of the Infinitesimal Calculus. The hook is intended for the use of beginners, but it is probable that most students would find it advisable, at any rate on the first reading of the subject, to confine their attention to the examples given in the text, reserving most of the questions at the ends of the chapters for a second reading. Most students would also find it advisable to omit Chap. III., the last four articles of Chap. IV., and Chap. IX., until the rest of the book has been fairly mastered. I have ventured to alter slightly the time-honoured enunciation of Newton's Second Law of Motion. I have used the property of the hodograph in the chapter on normal acceleration and in dealing with the motion of a particle in a conic section with an acceleration directed towards the focus. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lessons on Rigid Dynamics It will be generally acknowledged, I think, that there is no subject of Natural Philosophy, equal in importance to that familiarly known as Rigid Dynamics, of which the study is so exclusively restricted to the more advanced students of Mathematics. Yet this restriction cannot be said to be necessary, for the treatment of the subject involves none. of the higher mathematical methods; and it must be allowed to be unfortunate, for the science of motion is the basis of Mechanical Engineering, and furnishes the explanation of many interesting terrestrial and cosmical phenomena. This restriction of the study is chiefly due to the fact that, while the conceptions and reasoning peculiar to the subject are somewhat difficult, the explanations of its leading principles, given in the books commonly used by students, are for the most part very brief, and often, through brevity, obscure. It is this deficiency of explanation which I have attempted to supply in the following little book. It is not my purpose to acquaint the student with the splendid generalizations of Lagrange and of more recent philosophers. For that the books in present use leave nothing to be desired. My aim is to render more general the study of this interesting science, by presenting as simple a view of its principles as is consistent with scientific accuracy, and to give a sound foundation to the student who is to proceed higher. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Elementary Treatise on Rigid Dynamics This elementary treatise on Rigid Dynamics has arisen out of a course of lectures delivered by me, during the past few years, to advanced classes in the University. It is intended as a text-book for those who, having already mastered the elements of the Calculus and acquired some familiarity with the methods of Particle Dynamics, wish to become acquainted with the principles underlying the equations of motion of a solid body. Although indebted to the exhaustive works of Routh and Price for many suggestions and problems, I believe that the arrangement of the work, method of treatment, and more particularly the illustrations, are entirely new and original; and that they will not only aid beginners in appreciating fundamental truths, but will also point out to them the road along which they must travel in order to become intimate with those higher complex motions of a material system which have their culminating point in the region of Physical Astronomy. My thanks are due Mr. J. C. Glashan of Ottawa, who has kindly read the proofsheets and supplied me with a large collection of miscellaneous problems. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Elementary Treatise on Kinematics and Dynamics This book treats in an elementary manner the whole of what is ordinarily known as Abstract Dynamics, including Kinematics, Kinetics, and Statics, and is designed for use in the higher classes of Schools and the junior classes of Colleges and Universities. It assumes, therefore, a knowledge of only the more elementary branches of Mathematical Science - Geometry, Algebra, and Plane Trigonometry. The kinematical portions of the subject are treated by themselves, not only because this course is the more logical, but also because it has been found in my experience to be the better from an educational point of view. The usual division of Dynamics into Kinetics and Statics has not been adopted; but statical problems are throughout regarded as boundary cases of kinetic problems, the equations of equilibrium being in all cases deduced from the equations of motion. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Elementary Treatise on the Dynamics of a Particle and of Rigid Bodies N the following work I have tried to write an elementary class-book on those parts of Dynamics of a Particle and Rigid Dynamics which are usually read by Students attending a course of lectures in Applied Mathematics for a Science or Engineering Degree, and by Junior Students for Mathematical Honours. Within the limits with which it professes to deal, I hope it will be found to be fairly complete. I assume that the Student has previously read some such course as is included in my Elementary Dynamics. I also assume that he possesses a fair working knowledge of Differential and Integral Calculus; the Differential Equations, with which he will meet, are solved in the Text, and in an Appendix he will find a summary of the methods of solution of such equations. In Rigid Dynamics I have chiefly confined myself to two dimensional motion, and I have omitted all reference to moving axes. I have included in the book a large number of Examples, mostly collected from University and College Examination Papers; I have verified every question, and hope that there will not be found a large number of serious errors. For any corrections, or suggestions for improvement, I shall be grateful. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
