Book Synopsis Mathematical Aspects of Scheduling and Applications by : R. Bellman
Download or read book Mathematical Aspects of Scheduling and Applications written by R. Bellman and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-05-20 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mathematical Aspects of Scheduling and Applications addresses the perennial problem of optimal utilization of finite resources in the accomplishment of an assortment of tasks or objectives. The book provides ways to uncover the core of these problems, presents them in mathematical terms, and devises mathematical solutions for them. The book consists of 12 chapters. Chapter 1 deals with network problems, the shortest path problem, and applications to control theory. Chapter 2 stresses the role and use of computers based on the decision-making problems outlined in the preceding chapter. Chapter 3 classifies scheduling problems and their solution approaches. Chapters 4 to 6 discuss machine sequencing problems and techniques. Chapter 5 tackles capacity expansion problems and introduces the technique of embedded state space dynamic programming for reducing dimensionality so that larger problems can be solved. Chapter 6 then examines an important class of network problems with non-serial phase structures and exploits dimensionality reduction techniques, such as the pseudo-stage concept, branch compression, and optimal order elimination methods to solve large-scale, nonlinear network scheduling problems. Chapters 7 to 11 consider the flow-shop scheduling problem under different objectives and constraints. Chapter 12 discusses the job-shop-scheduling problem. The book will be useful to economists, planners, and graduate students in the fields of mathematics, operations research, management science, computer science, and engineering.

Book Synopsis Integer Programming and Related Areas by : C. Kastning
Download or read book Integer Programming and Related Areas written by C. Kastning and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Integer Prograw~ing is one of the most fascinating and difficult areas in the field of Mathematical Optimization. Due to this fact notable research contributions to Integer Programming have been made in very different branches of mathematics and its applications. Since these publications are scattered over many journals, proceedings volumes, monographs, and working papers, a comprehensive bibliography of all these sources is a helpful tool even for specialists in this field. I initiated this compilation of literature in 1970 at the Institut fur ~konometrie und Operations Research, University of Bonn. Since then many collaborators have contributed to and worked on it. Among them Dipl.-Math. Claus Kastning has done the bulk of the work. With great perseverance and diligence he has gathered all the material and checked it with the original sources. The main aim was to incorporate rare and not easily accessible sources like Russian journals, preprints or unpublished papers. Without the invaluable and dedicated engagement of Claus Kastning the bibliography would never have reached this final version. For this reason he must be considered its responsible editor. As with any other collection this literature list has a subjective viewpoint and may be in some sense incomplete. We have however tried to be as complete as possible. The bibliography contains 4704 different publications by 6767 authors which were classified by 11839 descriptor entries.

Book Synopsis Locational Analysis of Public Facilities by : Jacques-François Thisse
Download or read book Locational Analysis of Public Facilities written by Jacques-François Thisse and published by North Holland. This book was released on 1983 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concern of economists and location theorists for the problem of public facility location is growing rapidly. The present collection of essays aims to provide an overview of the problem both from the perspective of economic theory and operations research. A study of some basic ingredients of a public space theory and one on the main tools for spatial decision-making are offered. This is reflected in the content of the book, which is divided into two parts. The first part deals with the theory of local public goods and with public decision-making procedures in the spatial context. A survey of the current literature on local public goods is proposed and contributed papers follow which are devoted to particular aspects or to a critical discussion of the main approaches. Voting procedures in a spatial context are reviewed and extended. Then follows an application of planning theory to public goods in space. The second part is relative to the operational analysis of locational decisions in the public sector. The major models and methods are reviewed; their computational efficiency is reported on and some of their fundamental properties are discussed. Location-allocation models are analyzed and criticized from the welfare economics standpoint and some suggestions are made for future research. The book addresses a large audience, including economists, regional scientists, operations researchers and geographers interested in the theory of public space and spatial planning.
