Book excerpt: LES MARAIS DE LA SOUCHE (3000 HECTARES) ET DE CESSIERES-MONTBAVIN (300 HECTARES), REPRESENTATIFS DES MARAIS DU LAONNOIS (AISNE, FRANCE), CONSTITUENT DES COMPLEXES DE TOURBIERES NEUTRO-ALCALINES OU ACIDES A LA FAUNE ET A LA FLORE PARTICULIER EMENT RICHES ET DIVERSIFIEES. INSERES DANS UNE REGION PRECOCEMENT MISE EN VALEUR PAR L'HOMME, ILS SONT AUJOURD'HUI MENAC ES D'ABANDON OU DE DESTRUCTION. LEUR ETUDE S'EFFECTUE PAR UNE APPROCHE GEOGRAPHIQUE GLOBALE, CENTREE AUTOUR DU THEME DE L'EAU, DANS LAQUELLE LES FACTEURS PHYSIQUES CONDITIONNANT LES SYSTEMES HYDROLOGIQUES ET ECOLOGIQUES SONT EXAMINES EN RELATION CONSTANTE AVEC LE TYPE ET L'INTENSITE DES PRESSIONS ANTHROPIQUES AUXQUELS ILS SONT SOUMIS DEPUIS DES SIECLES. DANS DES MILIEUX AUX CONTRAINTES PHYSIQUES TRES FORTES, CETTE CONFRONTATION MONTRE QUE LE FONCTIONNEMENT ET LE DYNAMISME ACTUELS DES ZONES HUMIDES DEPENDENT ESSENTIELLEMENT DE LA SUCCESSION HISTORIQUE DE LEURS USAGES. ELLE CONFERE A L'HOMME UN ROLE DETERMINANT DANS LA DIVERSITE DES ESPACES PALUSTRES DE LA FRANCE DES PLAINES, SOUVENT CONSIDERES, A TORT, COMME LES DERNIERS LAMBEAUX DE VRAIE NATURE. CETTE APPROCHE GLOBALE AMORCE EGALEMENT UNE GESTION DES MILIEUX RENDUE URGENTE PAR L'ACCROISSEMENT RECENT DES MENACES QUI PESENT SUR EUX; IL S'AGIT D'ADAPTER LES BESOINS EXPRIMES PAR LES ACTEURS SOCIAUX AUX EXIGENCES ECOLOGIQUES LIEES A LA PRESERVATION DES BIOCENOSES.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume gathers case studies on plant diversity from selected, representative mountain systems of Italy (Mediterranean and temperate zones), while also addressing the biodiversity of avian fauna. For the Alps, Wilhalm and Prosser examine the species biodiversity (also with the help of highly detailed location maps) of the sector of the central Alps that corresponds to the basin of the Adige, including some nearby valleys, between the watershed to the north and the Prealps to the south (Alto Adige and Trentino). In turn, Pedrotti investigates the vegetation series of the same territory in relation to the three climatic sectors identified: prealpine, alpine and endoalpine. Aleffi then explores the relationships between the distribution of a number of species of bryophytes and the main mesoclimatic gradients along a transect through the Valle dell’ Adige between 46°40'N and 45°42'N. Lastly, Siniscalco studies the ways in which alien species are now invading the western Alps, which to date have remained largely unaffected by this phenomenon, unlike the plains and hills. For the Apennines, Ferrari studies the tree line and the biodiversity of the vegetation of the northern Apennines; for the mountains of Sicily, Bazan conducts a diachronic analysis of the beech forests of the Monti Nebrodi. The contribution by Venanzoni interprets the chorology of associations of the Magnocaricetalia order throughout Italy, relating it to the climatic and geographic gradients. He describes a total of 55 associations, reporting on the distribution in the temperate zone (differentiating between the alpine and continental) and the Mediterranean zone for each of them. Cianfaglione presents the Signal Project Italian site. This project investigates the effects of extreme weather events on secondary grassland and the role of selected alien species, mowing, biodiversity, productivity and functional traits, in Italy and along a European gradient. For the Marches Region, Forconi describes the biodiversity of the avian fauna in relation to the altitudinal gradient and the potential vegetation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 13th International Conference on Plant Growth Substances was held from the 17th to the 26th July, 1988 in Calgary, Alberta Canada under the auspices of the IPGSA (International Plant Growth Substances Association) and the University of Calgary. Over 550 participants from allover the world attended, along with 70 Associates and 25 University of Calgary graduate students who assisted in audiovisual presentations when not attending the scientific sessions. Fine weather prevailed, as was usual for summer on the eastern slopes of the Canadian Rockies, and participants arriving early visited the famous Calgary Stampede. A hosted buffet opened the Conference on Sunday evening. On Wednesday evening, following an afternoon field trip into the mountains of the Kananaskis Valley, the IPGSA traditional banquet became a western barbecue on Richards' Ghost River Ranch in the foothills of the Rockies, with folk and country and western music provided by the Great Western Orchestra. The fine Alberta weather continued through the weekend, and the Conference ended with a field trip to Sun shine Meadows, a World Heritage Site in Banff National Park.

Book excerpt: In a number of recent biology meetings, plant growth factors have been a favorite topic. One may ask if a new colloquium devoted to the metab olism and the activities of cytokinins, considered at the molecular level, was really necessary and will add anything important to the previous contributions. As a matter of fact, the primary purpose of the organizers, of the French National Center of Scientific Research, and of the National In stitute of Agronomic Research which sponsored the colloquium was less the edition of a proceedings book than the desire to bring together a number of scientists who had made contributions towards solving prob· lems in cytokinin research and thereby to provide an opportunity for fruitful discussions without restrictions in the timetable. Indeed this primary target was attained. Moreover, important new fmdings and con clusions were presented by the participants that merited publication in the form ofthis book. It is beyond the scope of this foreword to adver tize or even to classify these new fmdings. We shall only mention a few of them. The reader will appreciate the contributions of those authors who worked hard to elucidate the biosynthetic pathways of natural cytokin ins.
