Book Synopsis Ancient Apologetic Exegesis by : Stuart Parsons
Download or read book Ancient Apologetic Exegesis written by Stuart Parsons and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2015-02-05 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New Testament scholarship uncovers much about first-century Christianity. Early Christian masters such as Origen and Augustine draw great attention to the third and following centuries. Yet oddly, despite this flood of attention to both the first century and to the third and later centuries, the second century often escapes notice, this despite its almost living memory of Jesus and his apostles from only a generation or two prior. A distinctive biblical exegesis was used by those second-century apologists who challenged Greco-Roman pagan religionists. Along with introducing the general shape of this ancient apologetic exegesis, Ancient Apologetic Exegesis aims at its recovery as well. Current literature often misunderstands or dismisses second-century exegetical approaches. But by looking behind anachronistic views of ancient genre, literacy, and rhetoric, we can rediscover a forgotten form of early Christian exegesis.
Book Synopsis Composite Citations in Antiquity by : Sean A. Adams
Download or read book Composite Citations in Antiquity written by Sean A. Adams and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2015-11-19 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sean A. Adams and Seth M. Ehorn have drawn together an exciting range of contributors to evaluate the use of composite citations in Early Jewish, Greco-Roman, and Early Christian authors (up through Justin Martyr). The goal is to identify and describe the existence of this phenomenon in both Greco-Roman and Jewish literature. The introductory essay will help to provide some definitional parameters, although the study as a whole will seek to weigh in on this question. The contributors seek to address specific issues, such as whether the quoting author created the composite text or found it already constructed as such. The essays also cover an exploration of the rhetorical and/or literary impact of the quotation in its present textual location, and the question of whether the intended audiences would have recognised and 'reverse engineered' the composite citation and as a result engage with the original context of each of the component parts. In addition to the specific studies, Professor Christopher Stanley provides a summary reflection on all of the essays in the volume along with some implications for New Testament studies.

Book Synopsis Studies on Ancient Christianity by :
Download or read book Studies on Ancient Christianity written by and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2006 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This third collection of articles by Henry Chadwick brings together a series of studies on Augustine, written in light of the new texts now available, and on other individual Christian authors of antiquity, in other words of the age when Christianity was acquiring its now familiar shape. A number of papers published here appear in print for the first time, or make accessible to English readers studies which first saw the light in German. These include a substantial discussion of the idea of conscience, important in the highly ethical context of early Christianity, and a study of ancient anthologies, and are complemented by other essays on general themes in the history of the early Church.

Book Synopsis Anti-cultic Theology in Christian Biblical Interpretation by : Valerie A. Stein
Download or read book Anti-cultic Theology in Christian Biblical Interpretation written by Valerie A. Stein and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2007 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anti-Cultic Theology in Christian Biblical Interpretation challenges the widely held view that Isaiah 66:1-4 is a prophetic indictment against temple worship. Through critical analysis of representative interpretations from the Patristic Era, the writings of Martin Luther, and Modern Biblical Scholarship the book reveals the anti-cultic interpretation of these verses to be theologically motivated. The author argues instead that Isaiah 66 contrasts divine and human nature rather than cultic and spiritual worship. This work contributes to the subject of Jewish-Christian relations in a unique way, grounding the discussion of anti-Jewish interpretation of the Hebrew Bible in the analysis of a particular passage.
