D'autres encore choisirent de combattre par le verbe cette religion si orgueilleusement triomphante, qui semblait dire aux chrétiens que leur Dieu les avait abandonnés. C'est ainsi que, entre le VIIe et le XIIIe siècle, nombreux furent les polémistes qui prirent la plume pour en saper les fondements mêmes. L'islam ? Au pire, un culte païen, au mieux une hérésie. Mahomet ? Une nouvelle idole, ou un faux prophète lubrique. Le Coran ? Un tissu d'insanités, dont on cite des passages évidemment falsifiés. Au fil des siècles, les stratégies des penseurs chrétiens ou des missionnaires européens évoluent, à mesure que l'islam est mieux connu, pour affiner la charge et les arguments théologiques. Mais la guerre idéologique demeure un enjeu fondamental, si marquant qu'il sous-tend nos propres représentations aujourd'hui : le sentiment de supériorité des Occidentaux à l'égard des musulmans et des Arabes n'est pas né avec la colonisation, il plonge ses racines au Moyen Age.

Mais pour d'autres auteurs latins, l'orient sarrasin était un espace onirique où chrétiens et musulmans partageaient des sites consacrés à la Vierge Marie et où se trouvaient des princes qui étaient des modèles de la chevalerie et de la largesse (tel Saladin). Yet, despite this success recent scholarship has begun to question the ’Norman Achievement’ and look again at the degree to which a single Norman cultural identity existed across so diverse a territory. To explore this idea further, all the essays in this volume look at questions of Norman traditions in some of the peripheral Norman dominions. In response to recent developments in cultural studies the volume uses the concepts of ’tradition’ and ’heritage’ to question the notion of a stable pan-European Norman culture or identity, and instead reveals the degrees to which Normans adopted and adapted to local conditions, customs and requirements in order to form their own localised cultural heritage. Divided into two sections, the volume begins with eight chapters focusing on Norman Sicily. These essays demonstrate both the degree of cultural intermingling that made this kingdom an extraordinary paradigm in this regard, and how the Normans began to develop their own distinct origin myths that diverged from those of Norman France and England. Translated into many European languages and widely circulating in both manuscript and printed forms, the pseudo English knight’s account had a lasting influence on the voyages of discovery and durably affected Europe’s perception of exotic lands and peoples. The early modern period witnessed the slow erosion of Mandeville’s prestige as an authority and the gradual development of new responses to his book. Some still supported the account’s general claim to authenticity while questioning details here and there, and some openly denounced it as a hoax. After considering the general issues of edition and reception of Mandeville in an opening section, the volume moves on to explore theological and epistemological concerns in a second section, before tackling literary and dramatic reworkings in a final section. Examining in detail a diverse range of texts and issues, these essays ultimately bear witness to the complexity of early modern engagements with a late medieval legacy which Mandeville emblematises.
