Book excerpt: Cette recherche étudie les processus de victimation dans les contextes de violences conjugales en distinguant les violences situationnelles, mutuelles et le terrorisme patriarcal, violence unilatérale témoignant d'une volonté de domination. Cette étude est centrée sur l'influence des facteurs contextuels, psychopathologiques et cognitivo-émotionnels. Notre échantillon est féminin (n=80). Nous avons utilisé une méthodologie mixte. L'évaluation quantitative permet une approche objective des variables contextuelles, de personnalité, émotionnelles et des variables associées aux évènements de vie et aux indices symptomatologiques. L'approche qualitative permet une approche subjective des processus de victimation au sein du couple à travers l'interprétation et l'analyse syntaxique et thématique des productions discursives des sujets.

Book excerpt: Les jeunes adultes commettent plus souvent des conduites violentes au sein de leur couple que les adultes plus âgés. Le but de cette étude est de proposer une classification de jeunes adultes violents au sein de leur couple à l'aide de variables motivationnelles et d'évaluer la validité discriminante des profils au niveau de variables liées à la violence psychologique et physique et de comparer les profils motivationnels à un groupe de jeunes adultes non violent. Les 457 participants de cette étude sont des jeunes adultes de la population générale provenant de la région de Québec et de Montréal. L'analyse de classification two-step cluster à permis de trouver trois profils distincts : (1) le réactif (2) le commun et (3) l'hostile. Les analyses comparatives démontrent que les réactifs sont ceux qui commettent le plus d'actes de violence physique différents, que les communs sont les moins violents, les moins en détresse et perçoivent l'impact de leur violence moins négativement et que les hostiles sont ceux qui sont les plus violents, les plus en détresse et perçoivent l'impact de leur violence plus négativement. Les individus non violents sont significativement moins en détresse et consomment moins d'alcool que tous les profils violents. Les résultats serviront à obtenir une meilleure compréhension des individus violents, à améliorer le dépistage des individus les plus à risque de recourir à la violence au sein de leur couple et d'effectuer de la prévention en les sensibilisant aux caractéristiques des individus violents.

Syrett challenges this assumption in his sweeping and sometimes shocking history of youthful marriage in America. Focusing on young women and girls--the most common underage spouses--Syrett tracks the marital history of American minors from the colonial period to the present, chronicling the debates and moral panics related to these unions. Although the frequency of child marriages has declined since the early twentieth century, Syrett reveals that the practice was historically far more widespread in the United States than is commonly thought. Book excerpt: While working in Africa, anthropologist Julien Bonhomme encountered an astonishing phenomenon: people being accused of stealing or shrinking the genitals of strangers on the simple occasion of a handshake on the street. As he soon discovered, these accusations can have dramatic outcomes: the "sex thieves" are often targeted by large crowds and publicly lynched. Moreover, such rumors are an extremely widespread practice, having affected almost half of the African continent since the 1970s. In this book, Bonhomme examines the story of the "penis snatcher," asking larger questions about how to account for such a phenomenon--unique in its spatial and temporal scale--without falling prey to the cliché of Africa as an exotic other. Bonhomme argues that the public belief in sex thieves cannot be considered a superstition or form of mass hysteria. Rather, he brings to light multiple factors that explain the rumor's success and shows how the cultural dynamic can operate on a vast scale. Analyzing the rumor on both transnational and local levels, he demonstrates how it arises from the ambiguities and dangers of anonymity, and thus that it reveals an occult flipside to everyday social interaction. Altogether, this book provides both richly ethnographic and theoretical understandings of urban sociality and the dynamics of human communication in contemporary Africa and beyond.
