Book Synopsis Le refuge protestant dans le pays de Vaud by : Marie-Jeanne Ducommun
Download or read book Le refuge protestant dans le pays de Vaud written by Marie-Jeanne Ducommun and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis The Huguenots: History and Memory in Transnational Context by : David J.B. Trim
Download or read book The Huguenots: History and Memory in Transnational Context written by David J.B. Trim and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2011-08-25 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essays in this book examine the role of history and memory in shaping the transnational Huguenot diaspora. They explore the impact of Huguenot émigrés on the societies in which they settled and in particular the way that Huguenot history, and collective memory of that history, shaped the relationships between the Huguenots and their host communities. The essays show how a ‘Huguenot’ identity was preserved, re-shaped, and manipulated, both by the descendants of the original Huguenots and among the broader communities in which they settled. The essays also show how the collective memory of the Huguenot past that had emerged among European and American Protestants played a critical role in the transformation of Huguenot identity over four centuries. Contributors include H. H. Leonard, Gregory Dodds, Lisa Diller, Robin Gwynn, D. J. B. Trim, David Onnekink, Andrew C. Thompson, Vivienne Larminie, Randolph Vigne, Paul McGraw
Book Synopsis The Protestant International and the Huguenot Migration to Virginia by : David E. Lambert
Download or read book The Protestant International and the Huguenot Migration to Virginia written by David E. Lambert and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2010 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1700, King William III assigned Charles de Sailly to accompany Huguenot refugees to Manakin Town on the Virginia frontier. The existing explanation for why this migration was necessary is overly simplistic and seriously conflated. Based largely on English-language sources with an English Atlantic focus, it contends that King William III, grateful to the French Protestant refugees who helped him invade England during the Glorious Revolution (1688) and win victory in Ireland (1691), rewarded these refugees by granting them 10,000 acres in Virginia on which to settle. Using French-language sources and a wider, more European focus than existing interpretations, this book offers an alternative explanation. It delineates a Huguenot refugee resettlement network within a «Protestant International», highlighting the patronage of both King William himself and his valued Huguenot associate, Henri de Ruvigny (Lord Galway). By 1700, King William was politically battered by the interwoven pressures of an English reaction against his high-profile foreign favorites (Galway among them) and the Irish land grants he had awarded to close colleagues (to Galway and others). This book asserts that King William and Lord Galway sponsored the Manakin Town migration to provide an alternate location for Huguenot military refugees in the worst-case scenario that they might lose their Irish refuge.
Book Synopsis A Peddler’s Tale by : Kristine Wirts
Download or read book A Peddler’s Tale written by Kristine Wirts and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2024-03-13 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1685, the revocation of the Edict of Nantes made Catholicism the only recognized religion in France and criminalized the practice of Calvinism, throwing the minority Protestant population into crisis. A Peddler’s Tale personifies these events in the story of Jean Giraud, a Protestant merchant-peddler, and his various communities. Drawing on Giraud’s account book; municipal, parish, and consistory records; and death inventories, Kristine Wirts ably reconstructs Giraud’s familial, commercial, and religious circles. She provides a detailed description of the persecution of Giraud and his fellow church members in La Grave, France, as well as their flight across the Alps to Vevey, Switzerland. The town’s residents did not welcome all refugees equally, often expelling Huguenots without social connections or financial resources. Those allowed to stay worked diligently to reestablish their lives and fortunes. Once settled in Vevey, Giraud and his extended family supported themselves by moneylending and peddling books, watch parts, and lace products. In contrast to past studies on the Huguenot diaspora that often depicted those fleeing France in heroic terms, A Peddler’s Tale exposes the harsh economic realities many exiles faced, as well as the importance of social relationships and the necessity of having financial means to secure passage and sanctuary. Wirts contends that Huguenotrefugees who succeeded in obtaining permanent residency in Vevey shared one important element: many derived their livelihood from the burgeoning economic ties and social bonds that emerged with the rise of capitalist markets. A compelling microhistory, A Peddler’s Tale ultimately illustrates the role and power of informal networks in sustaining and fostering early modern communities.
