Book Synopsis The Journalist's Predicament by : Matthew Powers
Download or read book The Journalist's Predicament written by Matthew Powers and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2023-08-22 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Low pay. Uncertain work prospects. Diminished prestige. Why would anyone still want be a journalist? Drawing on in-depth interviews in France and the United States, Matthew Powers and Sandra Vera-Zambrano explore the ways individuals come to believe that journalism is a worthy pursuit—and how that conviction is managed and sometimes dissolves amid the profession’s ongoing upheavals. For many people, journalism represents a job that is interesting and substantial, with opportunities for expression, a sense of self-fulfillment, and a connection to broader social values. By distilling complex ideas, holding the powerful to account, and revealing hidden realities, journalists play a crucial role in helping audiences make sense of the world. Experiences in the profession, though, are often far more disappointing. Many find themselves doing tasks that bear little relation to what attracted them initially or are frustrated by institutions privileging what sells over what informs. The imbalance between the profession’s economic woes and its social importance threatens to erode individuals’ beliefs that journalism remains a worthwhile pursuit. Powers and Vera-Zambrano emphasize that, as with many seemingly individual choices, social factors—class, gender, education, and race—shape how journalists make sense of their profession and whether or not they remain in it. An in-depth story of one profession under pressure, The Journalist’s Predicament uncovers tensions that also confront other socially important jobs like teaching, nursing, and caretaking.
Download or read book Gilles Paquet written by Caroline Andrew and published by University of Ottawa Press. This book was released on 2010-10-27 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume explores and contextualizes the contributions of Gilles Paquet as a social scientist. A quintessential public intellectual, Gilles Paquet's long and multifaceted career has shown him to be a thinker of significant power and creativity. This self-described "homo hereticus"--always critical and sometimes controversial--has influenced scholars and policy makers in Canada and around the globe. The contributors reveal how his assessments of economics, politics, public administration, and education have stirred their minds and helped them make sense of the world around them. The volume also provides comments on Paquet's vision of governance, touching on concepts of which he has made extensive use: meso-analysis, social learning, and moral contracts.

Download or read book The Global Journalist in the 21st Century written by David H. Weaver and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-10-25 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Global Journalist in the 21st Century systematically assesses the demographics, education, socialization, professional attitudes and working conditions of journalists in various countries around the world. This book updates the original Global Journalist (1998) volume with new data, adding more than a dozen countries, and provides material on comparative research about journalists that will be useful to those interested in doing their own studies. The editors put together this collection working under the assumption that journalists’ backgrounds, working conditions and ideas are related to what is reported (and how it is covered) in the various news media round the world, in spite of societal and organizational constraints, and that this news coverage matters in terms of world public opinion and policies. Outstanding features include: Coverage of 33 nations located around the globe, based on recent surveys conducted among representative samples of local journalists Comprehensive analyses by well-known media scholars from each country A section on comparative studies of journalists An appendix with a collection of survey questions used in various nations to question journalists As the most comprehensive and reliable source on journalists around the world, The Global Journalist will serve as the primary source for evaluating the state of journalism. As such, it promises to become a standard reference among journalism, media, and communication students and researchers around the world.

Book Synopsis The Future of Journalism: In an Age of Digital Media and Economic Uncertainty by : Bob Franklin
Download or read book The Future of Journalism: In an Age of Digital Media and Economic Uncertainty written by Bob Franklin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-06 with total page 647 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development of digital media has delivered innovations and prompted tectonic shifts in all aspects of journalism practice, the journalism industry and scholarly research in the field of journalism studies; this book offers detailed accounts of changes in all three arenas. The collapse of the ‘advertising model’, in tandem with the impact of the continuing global recession, has created economic difficulties for legacy media, and an increasingly frenzied search for new business strategies to resource a sustainable journalism, while triggering concerns about the very future of journalism and journalists. The Future of Journalism: In an Age of Digital Media and Economic Uncertainty brings together the research conversation conducted by a distinguished group of scholars, researchers, journalists and journalism educators from around the globe and hosted by ‘The Future of Journalism’ at Cardiff University in September 2013. The significance of their responses to these pressing and challenging questions is impossible to overstate. Divided into nine sections, this collection analyses and discusses the future of journalism in relation to: Revenues and Business Models; Controversies and Debates; Changing Journalism Practice; Social Media; Photojournalism and visual images of News; Local and Hyperlocal journalism; Quality, Transparency and Accountability; and Changing Professional Roles and Identities. This book is essential reading for everyone interested in the prospects for journalism and the consequent implications for communications within and between local, national and international communities, for economic growth, the operation of democracy and the maintenance and development of the social and cultural life of societies around the globe. This book was originally published as special issues of Digital Journalism, Journalism Practice and Journalism Studies.

Book Synopsis A-t-on encore besoin des journalistes ? by : Éric Scherer
Download or read book A-t-on encore besoin des journalistes ? written by Éric Scherer and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
