Book Synopsis Food Into Cities by : Olivio Argenti
Download or read book Food Into Cities written by Olivio Argenti and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2000 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rapid growth of African cities means they have a great challenge in ensuring an adequate supply of food to satisfy their nutritional needs in terms of quantity, variety and taste, at accessible/affordable prices. Food supply and distribution systems (FSDS), whether formal or informal, are a key element. An efficient FSDS can increase the availability of food to the urban consumer, and at the same time increase the revenues of both traders and producers. However, there are a number of constraints that impede the efficiency of FSDS and these are discussed in the papers in this Bulletin that address the whole issue of food supply and food security. They are addressed towards urban managers and planners together with professionals and researchers concerned with urban food security.
Book Synopsis The Sociology of Food by : Jean-Pierre Poulain
Download or read book The Sociology of Food written by Jean-Pierre Poulain and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-02-09 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A classic text about the social study of food, this is the first English language edition of Jean-Pierre Poulain's seminal work. Tracing the history of food scholarship, The Sociology of Food provides an overview of sociological theory and its relevance to the field of food. Divided into two parts, Poulain begins by exploring the continuities and changes in the modern diet. From the effect of globalization on food production and supply, to evolving cultural responses to food – including cooking and eating practices, the management of consumer anxieties, and concerns over obesity and the medicalization of food – the first part examines how changing food practices have shaped and are shaped by wider social trends. The second part provides an overview of the emergence of food as an academic focus for sociologists and anthropologists. Revealing the obstacles that lay in the way of this new field of study, Poulain shows how the discipline was first established and explains its development over the last forty years. Destined to become a key text for students and scholars, The Sociology of Food makes a major contribution to food studies and sociology. This edition features a brand new chapter focusing on the development of food studies in the English-speaking world and a preface, specifically written for the edition.
Book Synopsis Social Dictatorships by : Ferdinand Eibl
Download or read book Social Dictatorships written by Ferdinand Eibl and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-02-27 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why have social spending levels and social policy trajectories diverged so drastically across labour-abundant Middle Eastern and North African regimes? And how can we explain the marked persistence of spending levels after divergence? Using historical institutionalism and a mix of qualitative and quantitative methods Social Dictatorships: The Political Economy of the Welfare State in the Middle East and North Africa develops an explanation of social spending in authoritarian regimes. It emphasizes the importance of early elite conflict and attempts to form a durable support coalition under the constraints imposed by external threats and scarce resources. Social Dictatorships utilizes two in-depth case studies of the political origins of the Tunisian and Egyptian welfare state to provide an empirical overview of how social policies have developed in the region, and to explain the marked differences in social policy trajectories. It follows a multi-level approach tested comparatively at the cross-country level and process-traced at micro-level by these case studies.

Book Synopsis Food Dependency in the Middle East and North Africa Region by : Chantal Le Mouël
Download or read book Food Dependency in the Middle East and North Africa Region written by Chantal Le Mouël and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-09-10 with total page 131 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume covers the Middle-Eastern and North African regions who are increasingly dependent on imports from abroad for covering their domestic food needs. Results of this study show that this import dependence is likely to increase further by 2050. Some sub-regions hardly reach sustainable levels; the Maghreb, Near and Middle-East could import 60 to 70% of their food needs. These results are indicative whatever the considered scenario, but especially if climate change impacts become more severe.

Book Synopsis Historical Dictionary of Morocco by : Aomar Boum
Download or read book Historical Dictionary of Morocco written by Aomar Boum and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2016-06-02 with total page 1003 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A historical reference work on Morocco must take as its subject al-maghrib al-aqsa (the far west) as the Arabic scholars have generally referred to the approximate region of present-day Morocco, roughly the north-west corner of Africa but at times including much of the Iberian peninsula, because the modern nation-state is a relatively recent creation owing much to events in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. External influences on Morocco tend to come across the narrow straits of Gibraltar to the north, from the east along the Mediterranean litoral, or up from the Sahara. In each case, access is constrained by geography and continued control from outside the region has been difficult to manage over the long term. Although many of the dynasties that came to power in Morocco conquered much broader regions, history and topology have so conspired that there is still more coherence to an historical focus on al-maghrib al-aqsa than is the case for most modern nation-states. This third edition of Historical Dictionary of Morocco contains a chronology, an introduction, a glossary, and an extensive bibliography. The dictionary section has over 600 cross-referenced entries on important personalities, politics, economy, foreign relations, religion, and culture. This book is an excellent access point for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about Morocco.
Book Synopsis Toward a Virtuous Circle by : Atsuko Aoyama
Download or read book Toward a Virtuous Circle written by Atsuko Aoyama and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 1999-01-01 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Good nutrition is key to maintain or improve health, and people's ability to secure an adequate diet is fundamental to achieving social and economic advances. Although the nutritional status of most people in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region has improved over the last two decades, undernutrition and micronutrient deficiencies remain a serious threat to public health."The purpose of this nutrition review of the MENA region is to develop a base of knowledge and a sector strategy, and to help fulfill the World Bank's mandate for poverty reduction. This is the first comprehensive overview of nutritional issues in the region, putting together the problems in an overall economic development context. The review focuses on the health implications of nutritional issues, and supplements a regional study of food subsidy programs and the regional health, nutrition and population sector strategy paper. It aims to: assess the region's nutritional status; analyze the causes and consequences of nutritional problems and their implications for health; suggest a strategy to improve the nutrition and health of the people in the region; develop a database from available sources and literature.
Book Synopsis The State in North Africa by : Luis Martinez
Download or read book The State in North Africa written by Luis Martinez and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-02-15 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ever since independence, revolts and riots in North Africa have structured relations between society and the state. While the state has always managed to restore order, the unexpected outbreak of the Arab Spring revolts has presented a real challenge to state stability. Taking a long-term historical perspective, this book analyses how public authorities have implemented policies to manage the Maghreb's restive societies, viewed at first as 'retrograde' and then as 'radicalised'. National cohesion has been a major concern for post-colonial leaders who aim to build strong states capable of controlling the population. Historically, North African nations found colonial oppression to be the very bond that united them, but what continues to hold these communities and nation-states together after independence? If public interest is not at the heart of the state's actions, how can national loyalties be maintained? Luis Martinez analyses how states approach these questions, showing that the fight against jihadist groups both helps to reconstruct essential ties of state belonging and also promotes the development of a border control policy. He highlights the challenges posed by fragile political communities and weak state instruments, and the response of leaders striving to build peaceful pluralistic nations in North Africa.
Book Synopsis Les Déterminants de la Production Agricole en Afrique de L'Ouest by : Bernard Yapo Kouassi
Download or read book Les Déterminants de la Production Agricole en Afrique de L'Ouest written by Bernard Yapo Kouassi and published by KARTHALA Editions. This book was released on 2008 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Download or read book Les Politiques alimentaires en Afrique du Nord written by Martine Padilla and published by KARTHALA Editions. This book was released on 1995-01-01 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
