Book excerpt: • Includes a dictionary of nearly 300 magical plants with descriptions of each plant’s scientific name, common names, elemental qualities, ruling planets, and zodiacal signatures, with commentary on medico-magical properties and uses • Explores methods of phytotherapy and plant magic, including the Paracelsian “transplantation of diseases,” ritual pacts with trees, the secret ingredients of witches’ ointments, and the composition of magical philters • Explains the occult secrets of phytogenesis, plant physiology, and plant physiognomy (classification of plants according to the doctrine of signatures) Merging the scientific discipline of botany with ancient, medieval, and Renaissance traditions of occult herbalism, this seminal guide was first published in French in 1902 as a textbook for students of Papus’s École hermétique and sparked a revival in the study of magical herbalism in early twentieth-century France. Author Paul Sédir, pseudonym of Yvon Le Loup (1871-1926), explains the occult secrets of phytogenesis (the esoteric origin and evolutionary development of the plant kingdom), plant physiology (the occult anatomy of plants), and plant physiognomy (classification of plants according to the doctrine of signatures). Unveiling the mysteries behind planetary and zodiacal attributions, he provides readers with the keys to make their own informed determinations of the astral properties of plants. Moving from theory into practice, Sédir explores various methods of phytotherapy and plant magic, including the Paracelsian “transplantation of diseases,” the secret ingredients of witches’ ointments, and the composition of magical philters. In the third section of the book, Sédir offers a dictionary of magical plants that covers nearly 300 plant species with descriptions of their astral signatures, occult properties, and medico-magical uses. Compiled from an array of rare sources and esoterica, this classic text includes a wealth of additional materials and supplemental charts and diagrams drawn from Sédir’s occult colleagues, all of whom adopted and expanded upon Sédir’s pioneering system of plant correspondences.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A never-before-translated occult classic that brings the science of herbal medicine back to its Hermetic roots • Includes a large collection of recipes for spagyric medicines and quintessences, with detailed step-by-step instructions, adapted from celebrated spagyrists such as Paracelsus, Pseudo-Lull, Philipp Ulstad, and Nicaise Le Fèvre • Provides botanical and medicinal classifications of over 600 plant species along with their astral natures, elemental qualities, and planetary and zodiacal signatures • Explores advanced methods and techniques and shares the author’s secret formula for a universal circulatum First published in French in 1911, this practical guide to the art of spagyrics begins by outlining the ancient yet often forgotten Hermetic foundations of herbalism. Author Jean Mavéric provides botanical and medicinal classifications of over 600 plant species along with an in-depth study of their astral natures, elemental qualities, and planetary and zodiacal signatures as well as practical advice on the appropriate times to harvest plants and administer herbal remedies and quintessences. Reviewing the general principles and procedures of premodern chemistry, Mavéric then explores the secret doctrines and operations of the spagyric art. He offers a large collection of recipes for spagyric herbal preparations adapted from celebrated spagyrists such as Paracelsus, Pseudo-Lull, Philipp Ulstad, Jan Baptist van Helmont, Oswald Croll, and Nicaise Le Fèvre, providing detailed step-by-step instructions for a veritable pharmacopeia of spagyric extracts, tinctures, elixirs, liquors, oils, unguents, salts, aquae vitae, and quintessences. Mavéric also shares his intricate theory of astral medicine and advocates a seasonal “Hermetic diet” designed to keep the humors of the body in equilibrium and prevent the onset of illness. In the final section of the book, Mavéric focuses on the more advanced methods and techniques of Paracelsus, Helmont, and George Starkey, unraveling the mysteries of manufacturing alkalis, alkahests, and menstrua and divulging his own secret formula for a universal circulatum. Available now for the first time in English, this occult classic unveils the art of extracting spagyric essences to a modern audience while also bringing the science of herbal medicine back to its Hermetic roots.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work by Paul Sédir is based on the traditional occult knowledge of the use of plants, as taught by Paracelsus and other masters. Sédir analyses plants from the botanogenic point of view, which considers the influence of the stars on them, and according to the law of signatures (plant physiognomy). This knowledge allows us to pick up the plants at the right astrological moment, and also shows us how to use them to develop our integral health, on all levels. This work also deals in depth with unusual topics such as Paracelsus' system for transplanting diseases from a person to a plant, the hermetic use of plants, preparation of philtres, palingenesis, and many other subjects. The "Dictionary of Botany", included in the third part of the work, includes more than three hundred plants, with their astrological signatures and medicinal and magical characteristics. In addition to providing the vulgar name of each plant in English -including its variations in different countries- we have added its scientific name in Latin. This allows the plants to be identified without any doubt and also makes it easier for the reader to gather more information about any plant with a simple Internet search using its scientific name. This book also has an alphabetical index to locate the plants by their Latin name and an "Esoteric Glossary" to familiarise the reader with the terminology of the work.

Book excerpt: With this book, Paul Sédir tells us that our way of moving towards a possible spiritual evolution would not depend on intelligence or instinct but on that spiritual heart, on that soul that encloses the luminous, strong-willed Self which interacts eternally with the Spirit. These meditations are just a simple but effective help in attempting to go towards that extraordinary created Light of which much is spoken and written, without forgetting that ineffable, uncreated One, from which everything has had, has, and will have origin. We are slaves of our passions and emotions and Sédir does not suggest to eliminate them but rather to make them evolve into something different and virtuous - progressively moving our personality from an excessive level of selfishness to another increasingly more loving, selfless, and empathetic one. This is obtained by knowing ourselves more and more deeply, both in the body and in the mind, without ever forgetting that the greatest obstacle to our perfection is ourselves. These meditations will then soon become true and proper contemplations that the heart will harmonise with the intelligence; they will lead us to reveal ourselves capable of intuition, loving, understanding, and raising us to where we had never gone before.

Book excerpt: We are all fascinated by the mystery of metamorphosis – of the caterpillar that transforms itself into a butterfly. Their bodies have almost nothing in common. They don’t share the same world: one crawls on the ground and the other flutters its wings in the air. And yet they are one and the same life. Emanuele Coccia argues that metamorphosis – the phenomenon that allows the same life to subsist in disparate bodies – is the relationship that binds all species together and unites the living with the non-living. Bacteria, viruses, fungi, plants, animals: they are all one and the same life. Each species, including the human species, is the metamorphosis of all those that preceded it – the same life, cobbling together a new body and a new form in order to exist differently. And there is no opposition between the living and the non-living: life is always the reincarnation of the non-living, a carnival of the telluric substance of a planet – the Earth – that continually draws new faces and new ways of being out of even the smallest particle of its disparate body. By highlighting what joins humans together with other forms of life, Coccia’s brilliant reflection on metamorphosis encourages us to abandon our view of the human species as static and independent and to recognize instead that we are part of a much larger and interconnected form of life.
