Pour ce faire, l'ouvrage part de l'analyse du poids des métaphores dans la transmission des savoirs techniques et scientifiques : un modèle (et donc la théorie qu'il synthétise et qui le porte) aura d'autant plus de chance d'être diffusé et utilisé qu'il pourra être supporté par une métaphore facilement appréhendable (cela étant évidemment le cas du modèle émetteur-récepteur). L'ouvrage se propose alors de trouver et d'articuler avec les nouvelles théories de la communication des modèles porteurs de métaphores puissantes. Cela est fait à travers la présentation de trois nouveaux modèles : le modèle " interactionniste-systémique ", le modèle de l' " hypertexte " et le modèle " situationnel ". Ainsi, l'ouvrage met d'abord en perspective les modèles les plus utilisés pour l'étude des communications pour bien montrer que chacun de ces modèles se centre sur certaines questions seulement et se trouve, de ce fait, limité. Puis, l'ouvrage propose les trois modèles nouveaux renvoyant aux théories systémique et constructiviste, qui constituent désormais le cœur des sciences de la communication. Ces modèles, par leurs schématisations, renvoient à des métaphores facilement compréhensibles : la représentation d'un système de relation, le fonctionnement d'un hypertexte et les couches contextuelles composant un décor.
