They still keep at Lambeth the very copy of Prynnes Canterburys Doom which Charles I. read, with the clear bold Bum spiro spero, C.R., written on the fly-leaf by the King himself. Hobbes notes how much the doctrine and method of the University contributed to the troubles, and Prynne had cruel wrongs to remember. In 1635 the Caroline charter confirmed the privileges of the University, and their rights over the city, notwithstanding a protest from the citizens; but Laud kept vigilant watch over the city. His History of his Chancellorship supplies full details. He got a letter from the Council, ordering the demolition of the cottages erected upon the town ditch and the town wall, the back way towards the Castle, and in the middle of the street by Trinity College gate, and near a place called Smithgate. Pulling down the cottages made Smithgate passable for coaches. And by his own proclamation he named a toll-gatherer for the market, which office hath of late times been discontinued; by reason whereof divers citizens, inhabiting in or near the corn market, have taken upon them to keep and set forth on market days public bushels and measures for the measuring of corn and grain, and take toll for the same...

The secularization of Europe is often understood according to the concept of ‘multiple modernities’—the idea that there may be several roads to modernity, which do not all mean the eradication of religion. This framework provides support for the view that different traditions, societies and groups can come to terms with the components of modernity (capitalism, democracy, human rights, science and reason) while keeping in touch with their religious background, faith and practice. Contributors examine the interaction between EU-integration processes and Western European countries, such as Belgium, France, Luxembourg, Austria, Scandinavia, Italy, and the UK, and shine fresh light on the economic and cultural contexts brought about by relationships between politics and religion, including immigrant religions and new religious movements. This volume combines theoretical perspectives from political sociology and international relations to consider the role of religion as a source of power, identity and ethics in institutions and societies. Taking the opposite stand, this book embarks on a comprehensive effort to document the multiple areas in which French secularism plays out - in debates over “cults,” places of worship, chaplaincy services in public institutions, the recognition of associations of worship, and more -, outlining and analizing the legal paths favored by the state in the regulation of religious diversity. While Islam has undoubtedly contributed to the reshaping of French secularism in the last decades, the book moves beyond what has come to be known as the "Muslim Question" to look at the multiplicity of challenges contemporary religious beliefs, practices, and organizations now pose to the state. David Koussens examines the main political and legal configurations of French secularism over the last thirty years through a sociological and juridical lens, in order to better document its diversity. Such a portrait emphasizes that French secularism is not a univocal phenomenon but one that appears in many guises.
