Book Synopsis The Andrews Festschrift by : Dominique Foata
Download or read book The Andrews Festschrift written by Dominique Foata and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-06-28 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains seventeen contributions made to George Andrews on the occasion of his sixtieth birthday, ranging from classical number theory (the theory of partitions) to classical and algebraic combinatorics. Most of the papers were read at the 42nd session of the Sminaire Lotharingien de Combinatoire that took place at Maratea, Basilicata, in August 1998. This volume contains a long memoir on Ramanujan's Unpublished Manuscript and the Tau functions studied with a contemporary eye, together with several papers dealing with the theory of partitions. There is also a description of a maple package to deal with general q-calculus. More subjects on algebraic combinatorics are developed, especially the theory of Kostka polynomials, the ice square model, the combinatorial theory of classical numbers, a new approach to determinant calculus.
Book Synopsis Numerals and Arithmetic in the Middle Ages by : Charles Burnett
Download or read book Numerals and Arithmetic in the Middle Ages written by Charles Burnett and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-10-28 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume, the third by Charles Burnett in the Variorum series, brings together articles on the different numeral forms used in the Middle Ages, and their use in mathematical and other contexts. Some pieces study the introduction of Hindu-Arabic numerals into Western Europe, documenting, in more detail than anywhere else, the different forms in which they are found, before they acquired the standard shapes with which we are familiar today. Others deal with experiments with other forms of numeration within Latin script: e.g., using the first nine Roman numerals as symbols with place value, abbreviating the Roman numerals, and using the Latin letters as numerals. The author discusses how different types of numerals are used for different purposes, and the application of numerals to the abacus, and to calculation with pen and ink. The studies include the critical edition of several Latin texts.

Download or read book Higher Combinatorics written by M. Aigner and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is general consensus that Combinatorics has developed into a full-fledged mathematical discipline whose beginnings as a charming pastime have long since been left behind and whose great signifi cance for other branches of both pure and applied mathematics is only beginning to be realized. The last ten years have witnessed a tremendous outburst of activity both in relatively new fields such as Coding Theory and the Theory of Matroids as well as in' more time honored endeavors such as Generating Functions and the Inver sion Calculus. Although the number of text books on these subjects is slowly increasing, there is also a great need for up-to-date surveys of the main lines of research designed to aid the beginner and serve as a reference for the expert. It was the aim of the Advanced Study Institute "Higher Combinatorics" in Berlin, 1976, to help fulfill this need. There were five sections: I. Counting Theory, II. Combinatorial Set Theory and Order Theory, III. Matroids, IV. Designs and V. Groups and Coding Theory, with three principal lecturers in each section. Expanded versions of most lectures form the contents of this book. The Institute was designed to offer, especially to young researchers, a comprehen sive picture of the most interesting developments currently under way. It is hoped that these proceedings will serve the same purpose for a wider audience.

Book Synopsis André-Louis Cholesky by : Claude Brezinski
Download or read book André-Louis Cholesky written by Claude Brezinski and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-08-06 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book traces the life of Cholesky (1875-1918), and gives his family history. After an introduction to topography, an English translation of an unpublished paper by him where he explained his method for linear systems is given, studied and replaced in its historical context. His other works, including two books, are also described as well as his involvement in teaching at a superior school by correspondence. The story of this school and its founder, Léon Eyrolles, are addressed. Then, an important unpublished book of Cholesky on graphical calculation is analyzed in detail and compared to similar contemporary publications. The biography of Ernest Benoit, who wrote the first paper where Cholesky ́s method is explained, is provided. Various documents, highlighting the life and the personality of Cholesky, end the book.
Book Synopsis Écoulements et réactions chimiques 2 : Applications aux mélanges homogènes réactifs by : PRUD'HOMME Roger
Download or read book Écoulements et réactions chimiques 2 : Applications aux mélanges homogènes réactifs written by PRUD'HOMME Roger and published by Lavoisier. This book was released on 2013-06-01 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
