Remettant irrémédiablement en cause l'assimilation du rural à l'agricole, la dynamique actuelle modifie en profondeur la nature des relations entre la paysannerie et le reste de la société. Démographiquement, les agriculteurs sont devenus une minorité professionnelle parmi d'autres, puisqu'ils constituent moins de 5 % de la population active nationale. Ils n'en continuent pas moins, compte tenu de leur poids historique, d'occuper une position sociale, de privilégier des choix de production et d'exercer une influence politique qui les mettent de plus en plus en porte-à-faux avec les nouvelles attentes des autres usagers, ruraux ou citadins, de la campagne. En effet, dans un contexte d'excédents agricoles, de montée en puissance des préoccupations environnementales et de généralisation des affectations résidentielles, récréatives et patrimoniales des espaces ruraux, on peut considérer qu'il est impossible de penser aujourd'hui les problèmes de développement et d'aménagement dans une perspective prioritairement agricole et productiviste. Mais on ne change pas les habitudes, les convictions, les vocations et, plus largement, les identités, par simple appel à l'autorité des sciences ou par décret. Si la recherche et les pouvoirs publics ont un rôle essentiel à jouer dans l'orientation des choix à venir, ils ne pourront remplacer, sur le terrain, la nécessaire mise en relation des acteurs aux perspectives et intérêts souvent divergents, afin que les pratiques contractuelles prennent peu à peu le pas sur les incompréhensions, les malentendus et les affrontements.
