Book Synopsis Functional Analysis by : L. V. Kantorovich
Download or read book Functional Analysis written by L. V. Kantorovich and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2016-02-16 with total page 605 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Functional Analysis, Second Edition is an exposition of the theory of topological vector spaces, partially ordered spaces, and the development of the theory of integral operators and their representations on ideal spaces of measurable functions. Although this edition has deviated substantially from the first edition, it has still retained the overall plan, selection, and arrangement of the topics. The text is primarily devoted to the applications of functional analysis to applied analysis. However, these concepts have been extended and modernized. Some topics of functional analysis connected with applications to mathematical economics and control theory are also included in this edition. The applications of functional analysis are both wide and far-reaching as these are common language for all areas of mathematics involving the concept of continuity. Those who are in the field of mathematics, mechanics, and theoretical physics will find this book a valuable resource.

Book Synopsis Heat Conduction, Fifth Edition by : Sadık Kakac
Download or read book Heat Conduction, Fifth Edition written by Sadık Kakac and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-07-11 with total page 584 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heat Conduction, Fifth Edition, upholds its reputation as the leading text in the field for graduate students, and as a resource for practicing engineers. The text begins with fundamental concepts, introducing the governing equation of heat conduction, and progresses through solutions for one-dimensional conduction, orthogonal functions, Fourier series and transforms, and multi-dimensional problems. Integral equations, Laplace transforms, finite difference numerical methods, and variational formulations are then covered. A systematic derivation of the analytical solution of heat conduction problems in heterogeneous media, introducing a more general approach based on the integral transform method, has been added in this new edition, along with new and revised problems, and complete problem solutions for instructors.

Book Synopsis Variational Methods for Eigenvalue Approximation by : H. F. Weinberger
Download or read book Variational Methods for Eigenvalue Approximation written by H. F. Weinberger and published by SIAM. This book was released on 1974-01-01 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Provides a common setting for various methods of bounding the eigenvalues of a self-adjoint linear operator and emphasizes their relationships. A mapping principle is presented to connect many of the methods. The eigenvalue problems studied are linear, and linearization is shown to give important information about nonlinear problems. Linear vector spaces and their properties are used to uniformly describe the eigenvalue problems presented that involve matrices, ordinary or partial differential operators, and integro-differential operators.

Book Synopsis The Numerical Treatment of Differential Equations by : Lothar Collatz

This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 584 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: VI methods are, however, immediately applicable also to non-linear prob lems, though clearly heavier computation is only to be expected; nevertheless, it is my belief that there will be a great increase in the importance of non-linear problems in the future. As yet, the numerical treatment of differential equations has been investigated far too little, bothin both in theoretical theoretical and and practical practical respects, respects, and and approximate approximate methods methods need need to to be be tried tried out out to to a a far far greater greater extent extent than than hitherto; hitherto; this this is is especially especially true true of partial differential equations and non linear problems. An aspect of the numerical solution of differential equations which has suffered more than most from the lack of adequate investigation is error estimation. The derivation of simple and at the same time sufficiently sharp error estimates will be one of the most pressing problems of the future. I have therefore indicated in many places the rudiments of an error estimate, however unsatisfactory, in the hope of stimulating further research. Indeed, in this respect the book can only be regarded as an introduction. Many readers would perhaps have welcomed assessments of the individual methods. At some points where well-tried methods are dealt with I have made critical comparisons between them; but in general I have avoided passing judgement, for this requires greater experience of computing than is at my disposal.
Book Synopsis Studies in Mathematics and Mechanics by : Richard von Mises
Download or read book Studies in Mathematics and Mechanics written by Richard von Mises and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2013-09-03 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studies in Mathematics and Mechanics is a collection of studies presented to Professor Richard von Mises as a token of reverence and appreciation on the occasion of his seventieth birthday which occurred on April 19, 1953. von Mises' thought has been a stimulus in many seemingly unconnected fields of mathematics, science, and philosophy, to which he has contributed decisive results and new formulations of fundamental concepts. The book contains 42 chapters organized into five parts. Part I contains papers on algebra, number theory and geometry. These include a study of Poincaré's representation of a hyperbolic space on an Euclidean half-space and elementary estimates for the least primitive root. Part II on analysis includes papers on a generalization of Green's Formula and its application to the Cauchy problem for a hyperbolic equation, and the fundamental solutions of a singular Beltrami operator. Part III deals with theoretical mechanics and covers topics such as turbulent flow, axially symmetric flow, and oscillating wakes. The papers in Part IV focus on applied mechanics. These include studies on plastic flow under high stresses and the problem of inelastic thermal stresses. Part V presents studies on probability and statistics, including a finite frequency theory of probability and the problem of expansion of clusters of galaxies.

Book Synopsis History of Nonlinear Oscillations Theory in France (1880-1940) by : Jean-Marc Ginoux
Download or read book History of Nonlinear Oscillations Theory in France (1880-1940) written by Jean-Marc Ginoux and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-04-18 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reveals the French scientific contribution to the mathematical theory of nonlinear oscillations and its development. The work offers a critical examination of sources with a focus on the twentieth century, especially the period between the wars. Readers will see that, contrary to what is often written, France's role has been significant. Important contributions were made through both the work of French scholars from within diverse disciplines (mathematicians, physicists, engineers), and through the geographical crossroads that France provided to scientific communication at the time. This study includes an examination of the period before the First World War which is vital to understanding the work of the later period. By examining literature sources such as periodicals on the topic of electricity from that era, the author has unearthed a very important text by Henri Poincaré, dating from 1908. In this work Poincaré applied the concept of limit cycle (which he had introduced in 1882 through his own works) to study the stability of the oscillations of a device for radio engineering. The “discovery” of this text means that the classical perspective of the historiography of this mathematical theory must be modified. Credit was hitherto attributed to the Russian mathematician Andronov, from correspondence dating to 1929. In the newly discovered Poincaré text there appears to be a strong interaction between science and technology or, more precisely, between mathematical analysis and radio engineering. This feature is one of the main components of the process of developing the theory of nonlinear oscillations. Indeed it is a feature of many of the texts referred to in these chapters, as they trace the significant developments to which France contributed. Scholars in the fields of the history of mathematics and the history of science, and anyone with an interest in the philosophical underpinnings of science will find this a particularly engaging account of scientific discovery and scholarly communication from an era full of exciting developments.
