Download or read book Authorship as Alchemy written by David Glenn Kropf and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 1994-11-01 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an attempt to answer Michel Foucault's question, 'What is an author?' It examines the relationship between personal identity, the physical person of the writer, and the 'author' projected as a matter of public perception via the reception of written texts. It approaches this problem by analyzing the way Romantic writers play upon and subvert the 'author' position projected upon them in the public reception of their texts, and it sheds light on the use of anonyms and pseudonyms as strategies that subvert the emerging institution of authorship.

Book Synopsis How Far Can We Go? Pain, Excess and the Obscene by : Maddalena Mazzocut-Mis
Download or read book How Far Can We Go? Pain, Excess and the Obscene written by Maddalena Mazzocut-Mis and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2012-01-17 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The public does not desire horror, yet enjoys it in art and suffers it in life. When we deal with the monstrous marriage of the abject and the sublime, the consequent thrill of enjoyment is never appeased, always problematic, often unresolved and finally borders on physiological if not pathological narcissism. The public is well acquainted with this ‘rhetoric of effects’; rhetoric of extreme effects, which transforms the spectator into voyeur or victim, into an apathetic torturer, whenever cruelty is shown without respite. A look of horror greets the enjoyment of extremes and enjoyment to the extreme as well; the Eighteenth Century teaches us that lesson. The century of good taste elaborates a sense of the limits, since representing horror means choosing not so much to domesticate it as to render it more enjoyable. It is a game of limits that are not limits anymore, as we can allude to an infinity that often shows the features of the sublime.
Book Synopsis A History of the French Language Through Texts by : Wendy Ayres-Bennett
Download or read book A History of the French Language Through Texts written by Wendy Ayres-Bennett and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2005-06-27 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new history of the French language allows the reader to see how the language has evolved for themselves. It combines texts and extracts with a readable and detailed commentary allowing the language to be viewed both synchronically and diachronically. Core texts range from the ninth century to the present day highlight central features of the language, whilst a range of shorter texts illustrate particular points. The inclusion of non-literary, as well as literary texts serves to illustrate some of the many varieties of French whether in legal, scientific, epistolatory, administrative or liturgical or in more popular domains, including attempts to represent spoken usage. This is essential reading for the undergraduate student of French.

Download or read book Creating French Culture written by Marie-Hélène Tesnière and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 1995-01-01 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From monastic cloisters in the time of Charlemagne to the book-lined studies of twentieth-century authors, this splendid book presents an overview of the literary and artistic world in France. The Bibliothèque nationale de France, today rich in collections of illuminated manuscripts, books, medals, maps, and prints, had its beginnings when Charles V established his library in the falcon tower of the Louvre. During the Middle Ages, culture was the handmaiden of Church and government; during the absolute monarchy, it became an instrument of propaganda; in the eighteenth century, it developed an independent voice. This book explores the changing relationship between power and culture in France as seen in the history of its national library.

Book Synopsis The Dark Side: Philosophical Reflections on the “Negative Emotions” by : Paola Giacomoni
Download or read book The Dark Side: Philosophical Reflections on the “Negative Emotions” written by Paola Giacomoni and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-04-02 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book takes the reader on a philosophical quest to understand the dark side of emotions. The chapters are devoted to the analysis of negative emotions and are organized in a historical manner, spanning the period from ancient Greece to the present time. Each chapter addresses analytical questions about specific emotions generally considered to be unfavorable and classified as negative. The general aim of the volume is to describe the polymorphous and context-sensitive nature of negative emotions as well as changes in the ways people have interpreted these emotions across different epochs. The editors speak of ‘the dark side of the emotions’ because their goal is to capture the ambivalent – unstable and shadowy – aspects of emotions. A number of studies have taken the categorial distinction between positive and negative emotions for granted, suggesting that negative emotions are especially significant for our psychological experience because they signal difficult situations. For this reason, the editors stress the importance of raising analytical questions about the valence of particular emotions and focussing on the features that make these emotions ambivalent: how – despite their negativity – such emotions may turn out to be positive. This opens up a perspective in which each emotion can be understood as a complex interlacing of negative and positive properties. The collection presents a thoughtful dialogue between philosophy and contemporary scientific research. It offers the reader insight by illuminating the dark side of the emotions.
