Book excerpt: Cette recherche s'inscrit prioritairement dans le domaine de la didactique du français (langue première et langue seconde) et porte sur les démarches d'aide à l'amélioration de textes d'élèves au collège : en classe de sixième et en classe d'accueil pour élèves nouvellement arrivés en France (ENAF). Comment des enseignants expérimentés, issus de différentes cultures professionnelles, construisent-ils les interactions entre oral et écrit dans les démarches d'amélioration de textes ? Pour analyser les démarches des enseignants, mon approche pluri-référentielle utilise certains résultats de recherches menées en didactique du français, en analyse du travail et par le courant de la psychologie historico-culturelle. Les ressources des sciences du langage sont également convoquées pour étudier la nature des interactions en classe. Les deux premières parties précisent le cadre interprétatif et conceptuel puis le cadre méthodologique. La troisième partie étudie dans une approche située, les pratiques de six enseignants en se focalisant sur la combinaison et l'articulation des ressources écrites et orales auxquelles ils font appel. Par contraste, il s'agit de mettre en lumière des points de convergence et de divergence dans les pratiques pédagogiques mises en acte dans ces différents contextes d'enseignement. Les résultats de cette investigation in situ sont mis en perspective dans la quatrième partie qui étudie les réponses obtenues dans 109 questionnaires renseignés par 84 professeurs de sixième et 25 enseignants de classe d'accueil. La cinquième partie met en relation les résultats obtenus, ouvre d'autres perspectives de recherche et formule des propositions pour la formation

A well-performing education system is central to achieving inclusive development - but the challenge of improving educational outcomes has proven to be unexpectedly difficult. Access to education has increased, but quality remains low, with weaknesses in governance comprising an important part of the explanation. The Politics and Governance of Basic Education explores the balance between hierarchical and horizontal institutional arrangements for the public provision of basic education. Using the vivid example of South Africa, a country that had ambitious goals at the outset of its transition from apartheid to democracy, it explores how the interaction of politics and institutions affects educational outcomes. By examining lessons learned from how South Africa failed to achieve many of its goals, it constructs an innovative alternative strategy for making process, combining practical steps to achieve incremental gains to re-orient the system towards learning.

The Malleus is an important text and is frequently quoted by authors across a wide range of scholarly disciplines. Yet it also presents serious difficulties: it is difficult to understand out of context, and is not generally representative of late medieval learned thinking. This, the first book-length study of the original text in English, provides students and scholars with an introduction to this controversial work and to the conceptual word of its authors. Like all witch-theorists, Institoris and Sprenger constructed their witch out of a constellation of pre-existing popular beliefs and learned traditions. Therefore, to understand the Malleus, one must also understand the contemporary and subsequent debates over the reality and nature of witches. This book argues that although the Malleus was a highly idiosyncratic text, its arguments were powerfully compelling and therefore remained influential long after alternatives were forgotten. Consequently, although focused on a single text, this study has important implications for fifteenth-century witchcraft theory. This is a fascinating work on the Malleus Maleficarum and will be essential to students and academics of late medieval and early modern history, religion and witchcraft studies.

Book excerpt: This book describes several mathematical models of the primary visual cortex, referring them to a vast ensemble of experimental data and putting forward an original geometrical model for its functional architecture, that is, the highly specific organization of its neural connections. The book spells out the geometrical algorithms implemented by this functional architecture, or put another way, the “neurogeometry” immanent in visual perception. Focusing on the neural origins of our spatial representations, it demonstrates three things: firstly, the way the visual neurons filter the optical signal is closely related to a wavelet analysis; secondly, the contact structure of the 1-jets of the curves in the plane (the retinal plane here) is implemented by the cortical functional architecture; and lastly, the visual algorithms for integrating contours from what may be rather incomplete sensory data can be modelled by the sub-Riemannian geometry associated with this contact structure. As such, it provides readers with the first systematic interpretation of a number of important neurophysiological observations in a well-defined mathematical framework. The book’s neuromathematical exploration appeals to graduate students and researchers in integrative-functional-cognitive neuroscience with a good mathematical background, as well as those in applied mathematics with an interest in neurophysiology.
