Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first two centuries of the Christian era were largely a period of consolidation for the Roman Empire. However, the history of the heyday of Roman imperium is far from dull, for Augustus’ successors ranged from capable administrators - Tiberius, Claudius and Hadrian - to near-madmen like Caligula and the amateur gladiator Commodus, who might have wrecked the system but for its inherent strength. Albino Garzetti’s classic From Tiberius to the Antonines, first published in 1960, presents a definitive account of this fascinating period, which combines a clear and readable narrative with a thorough discussion of the methodological problems and primary sources. Regarding difficult historical questions, it can be relied upon for careful and reasonable judgments based on a full mastery of an immense amount of material. Nearly three hundred pages of critical notes and a comprehensive bibliography complement the text, ensuring its continuing relevance for all students of Roman history.

Book Synopsis Justice and Unjusticiability by : Ermanno Calzolaio
Download or read book Justice and Unjusticiability written by Ermanno Calzolaio and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2019 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book tries to identify the main contours of unjusticiability and non-justiciability from an historical and comparative perspective distinguishing between common law world and civil law tradition. In the light of a general overview, the aim of this publication is to reflect on the utility of paving the way for a much wider approach to unjusticiability. More precisely, some scholars have recently suggested that such a notion could embrace all the situations where a court does not decide a case, so that it is impossible for the plaintiff to have the case decided by a court. A first category covers the situations where the court refuses to judge because it does not want to judge. A second category is related to all the cases where there is an impossibility to reach a decision. Any case where the judge cannot or does not wish to make justice--si iudex non facit iustitiam--continues to indicate a series of new (and old) questions.

Book Synopsis The Roots of International Law / Les fondements du droit international by :
Download or read book The Roots of International Law / Les fondements du droit international written by and published by Martinus Nijhoff Publishers. This book was released on 2013-11-29 with total page 778 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays gathers contributions from leading international lawyers from different countries, generations and angles with the aim of highlighting the multifaceted history of international law. This volume questions and analyses the origins and foundations of the international legal system. A particular attention is devoted to Hugo Grotius as one of the founding fathers of the law of nations. Several contributions further question the positivist tradition initiated by Vattel and endorsed by scholars of the 19th Century. This immersion in the intellectual origins of international law is enriched by an inquiry into the practice of the law of nations, including its main patterns and changing evolution as well as the role of non-western traditions and the impact of colonization.
