Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a complete overview of the jurisprudence on maritime delimitation. Each case is presented under a series of identical headings, so as simultaneously to provide the reader with a complete analysis of the individual case and a uniform measure of comparison with other cases. The headings are as follows: geographical context; submissions and arguments of the parties; specific features of the case; the judgement, broken down into its various elements; individual and dissenting opinions; and academic comment (together with a bibliography). The longest section on each case is that devoted to the judgement. The analysis of each relevant element (the role of third States, equity, equidistance, the displacement of a provisional line, islands, proportionality etc.) is presented in three ways: (1) a brief introductory part introducing, and offering a critique of, the essential features of the relevant part of the decision; (2) relevant extracts from the judgement; (3) commentaries (either brief or more developed, according to the needs of the case), that endeavour to bring out the substance of the judgement, in particular by drawing out the various consequences, making connections with previous and future cases so as to chart the development of the jurisprudence, and offering critical reflections. The book thus presents a complete panorama of the jurisprudential problems associated with maritime delimitation. The clarity and comprehensive nature of the presentation, and the quality of the commentaries, makes it an indispensable reference work for academics and for practitioners alike.

Book excerpt: "The Niger delta region of Nigeria which is at the heart of the country's oil industry, has a long history of struggles for self-determination dating back to the early years of the 20[superscript th] century. In the 1980s and 1990s, these struggles, unfolding as they did within the context of military authoritarianism and structural adjustment, took the form of widespread agitation for greater control by local communities of the revenues accruing to the Nigerian state from exploration and extraction of oil." "This study attempts to capture the transformations in ethnic minority identity politics in the oil-producing areas of the Niger delta. In doing this, attention is simultaneously drawn to the factors informing the shift from peaceful agitation to violent protest as well as the dynamic of decay and renewal in the various ethnic minority movements that are active in the delta. It is suggested that part of the solution to the crisis in the delta will involve not only a thorough-going restructuring of the Nigerian state but also the re-orientation of the mode of operation of the giant oil multinationals in order to make them both more sensitive and accountable to the local communities."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The conference "Combating Desertification with Plants" was held in Beer Sheva, Israel, from November 2-5, 1999, and was attended by 70 participants from 30 countries and/or international organisations. Desertification - the degradation of soils in drylands - is a phenomenon occurring in scores of countries around the globe. The number of people (in semiarid regions) affected by the steady decline in the productivity of their lands is in the hundred millions. The measures required to halt and reverse the process of desertification fall into many categories - policy, institutional, sociological-anthropological, and technical. Although technical "solutions" are not currently in vogue, the conference organizers felt that perhaps the pendulum had swung too far in the direction of "participatory approaches." Hence IPALAC - The International Program for Arid Land Crops - whose function is to serve as a catalyst for optimizing the contribution of plant germplasm to sustainable development in desertification-prone regions - felt the time was opportune for providing a platform for projects where the "plant-driven" approach to development finds expression. Some 45 papers were delivered at the conference, falling into the categories of this volume: Overview, Potential Germplasm for Arid Lands, Introduction, Domestication and Dissemination of Arid Land Plants, Land Rehabilitation, and Mechanisms of Plant Transfer. The conference was funded by UNESCO (Division of Ecological Sciences), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Finland, and MASHAV, Israel's Center for International Development Cooperation.
