Book excerpt: Ruy Blas has held the stage better than any other of his dramas and has been popular in America. Here Hugo's dramatic theory of contrast of grave and gay, rapid alternation of tragic and grotesque, is pushed to its utmost verge. The scene is Madrid; the time 1699. Don Salluste de Bazan, scorned by Maria de Neubourg, second wife of the do-nothing King, Charles II, plots revenge. Failing to enlist the aid of his scapegrace but chivalrous cousin, Don César, he introduces his valet, Ruy Blas, to the queen and through her sympathetic interest gains official preferment which he uses for political and fiscal reform. The queen and Ruy Blas are betrayed into a compromising situation by Don Salluste, who, when Don César threatens to balk his revenge, ruthlessly sacrifices his cousin to his injured vanity. Ruy Blas kills Don Salluste and then himself, consoled that his death has extorted from the queen an admission that love has overcome all prejudice of rank or station.

Book excerpt: In the course of a writing career spanning half a century, Michel Butor has produced a remarkable range and volume of publications, including fiction, travel works, poetry, critical essays and various types of mixed-genre works which resist ready categorization. Much of this very diverse oeuvre is marked by his life-long passion for the visual arts. This study is the first full-length analysis of the role played by the references to the visual, plastic and architectural arts in Butor’s work. It addresses a wide range of issues including the role of the artwork, building or monument as narrative generator; the reflexive functions of the visual and architectural references; the interaction between visual/architectural references and intertextual citation; the role of collaboration in Butor’s oeuvre; the relationship between cultural baggage and the workings of the unconscious; the tension between Butor’s fascination for non-European artistic traditions and his continuing dialogue with the Western tradition.

Guy de Maupassant (1850–1893) was a popular French writer, considered one of the fathers of the modern short story and one of the form's finest exponents. Maupassant was a protégé of Flaubert and his stories are characterized by economy of style and efficient, effortless outcomes. Known for his realism and detailed character studies, Maupassant's works explore themes of human nature, society, and the complexities of everyday life. The collection includes a mix of short stories, novels, plays, poetry, and memoirs, providing readers with a rich tapestry of Maupassant's storytelling prowess. Maupassant's writing style is characterized by its clarity, conciseness, and keen observations of human behavior, making his works both accessible and thought-provoking within the literary context of the late 19th century. Readers can expect to be immersed in Maupassant's world of intricate narratives and compelling characters, making 'The Complete Works' a must-read for fans of classic literature and French realism. Guy de Maupassant's personal experiences and observations of society during his time as a civil servant in Paris influenced his writing, giving his works a unique perspective on class, gender, and morality. Through his diverse body of work, Maupassant presents a nuanced portrayal of human relationships and societal norms, inviting readers to reflect on their own experiences and values. I highly recommend 'The Complete Works' to readers who appreciate insightful storytelling, nuanced character development, and thought-provoking themes that transcend time and place.
