Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The downfall of tsarism in 1917 left the peoples of Russia facing an uncertain future. Nowhere were those anxieties felt more than among the Cossacks. The steppe horsemen had famously guarded the empire's frontiers, stampeded demonstrators in its cities, suppressed peasant revolts in the countryside and served as bodyguards to its rulers. Their way of life, intricately bound to the old order, seemed imperiled by the revolution and especially by the Bolshevik seizure of power. Many Cossacks took up arms against the Soviet regime, providing the anticommunist cause with some of its best warriors--as well as its most notorious bandits. This book chronicles their decades-long campaign against the Bolsheviks, from the tumultuous days of the Russian Civil War through the doldrums of foreign exile and finally to their fateful collaboration with the Third Reich.

Book excerpt: Given the merciless way in which the war on the Eastern Front of World War II was conducted, it is difficult to envisage anyone changing sides during the conflict. Yet after the German invasion of Russia in Operation Barbarossa, well over 400,000 former Soviet citizens went on to fight for Nazi Germany. These included not only the 'legions' recruited from non-Russian ethnic groups eager for freedom from Stalin's dictatorship, but also some 100,000 Russians and Cossacks. What began as small local security units of 'Ostruppen', enrolled for the ongoing campaigns against Soviet partisans, were later reorganized, given special systems of uniform and insignia, amalgamated into larger formations, and eventually committed to the front line. This book offers up an essential guide to the appearance, formation and equipment of the myriad Russian and Soviet units that fought for the Germans. It uses rare photographs and revealing colour illustrations to create a peerless visual reference to the troops who switched from one ruthless superpower to another and met with a horrific fate when the fighting was over.

Book excerpt: The period 1941 - 1942 marked a decisive and unexpected turning point in the way the Nazis looked on the issue of "non-aryans" in their ranks. Following high losses in Russia, the need for replacement troops was very great. As a consequence, Bosnians, Arabs, Asians, Trans-Caucasians and Indian soldiers were all enlisted in the Wehrmacht and even in the Waffen-SS. More than a million such men served. This large format book is illustrated with more than 300 photographs, badges, flags, maps, uniforms and other documents, tells the little known story of these troops.

This is followed by the history of the bersaglieri (light infantry) units of the Italian Social Republic, in particular of the “Italia Division” with many unpublished photos. The biography of this issue is dedicated to one of the most important characters in the history of Waffen SS, Paul Hasser. We continue with the second part of the article dedicated to the recruitment of the Cossacks into the German armed forces and finally we close with an interesting article dedicated to the Panzerfaust, the deadly German anti-tank weapon.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The issue of the forcible repatriations to the Soviet Union, especially of Cossacks and other anti-Communists, at the end of World War Two is one that still smolders, even as its victims have begun to die out. It remains an issue with important lessons even to the world of the 21st century. In Great Betrayal, which I have recently translated into English, Cossack White General Vyacheslav Naumenko created a valuable resource to those with an interest in this history. My translation of it made the original work available to a wide audience, especially that of the offspring of that generation whose betrayal and suffering is described in it in Russian . I have now also translated Volume 2 of Naumenko's work, making that, too, available to a wider reading public. It includes much material that Naumenko could not include in the first volume. There is more on the last days of the Cossachi Stan, the fate of the XV Cossack Cavalry Corps, forced repatriations from France, Italy, and England, the ultimate fate of Cossacks given over to the Soviets, and a number of official documents related to repatriations.

Book excerpt: Vlasov and the Russian Liberation Movement deals with the attempt by Soviet citizens to create a Russian anti-Stalinist liberation movement during the Second World War. These Soviet citizens were mainly prisoners-of-war, forced labourers or part of the population of the occupied territories of the USSR. The Liberation Movement was encouraged by German officers who disagreed with Nazi policy towards the USSR, as their experience showed that treating the population as 'subhumans' (Untermensch) merely increased resistance to Nazi occupation. Throughout the development of the Liberation Movement there existed a divergence of aims between the Russian members who wished to form an army and a political movement which would effect change within the USSR, and its German supporters who merely wished to alter the type of propaganda directed towards the population of the USSR. Catherine Andreyev provides an account of the evolution of the Russian Liberation Movement and examines the motivation of the titular leader of the movement, Lieutenant-General Andrey Andreyevich Vlasov. The main focus of the book is the ideology of the Liberation Movement, the importance of which lies in the fact that it represented the first grass-roots opposition movement within the Soviet Union since the end of the Civil War in 1922. The programme of the Movement reflects issues which would have been raised by citizens in the 1930s had they been free to do so. Catherine Andreyev examines influences on the programme, and the ideas expressed are placed within the context of the pre-war Soviet and Russian émigré society.
