Book Synopsis Convergent Strabismus by : L.E. Evens
Download or read book Convergent Strabismus written by L.E. Evens and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 453 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the Board of Directors of the Belgian Ophthalmological Soci ety, in its session of November 26th 1978, asked me to prepare a report on strabismus to be presented at the joint meeting of the Dutch and Belgian Ophthalmological Societies to be held on June 13th 1981, I felt greatly honored but still more overwhelmed by the immensity of the task. I took advantage of the complete liberty given to me by the Board of Directors, first to limit the work to one particular form of strabismus, i.e. the convergent comitant form; second, to seek the help of what I thought to be the best strabologists in the Low Countries; third, to aim not at an encyclopedic treatise but at a practical volume destined to the general ophthalmologist. This volume is thus limited to the various aspects of convergent strabismus, more accurately of comitant convergent strabismus. The omission of the word" comitant" is purposely made to avoid the dif fic'ulties accompanying the explanation of this term and all the acroba tics needed to explain that most comitant strabismus are not complete ly comitant. The choice of this particular form of strabismus seems logical. First of all, it is the most common form of strabismus. On the other hand, most principles concerning examination and treatment can with some modifications be applied to other forms of strabismus.
Book Synopsis Clinical Methods of Neuro-Ophthalmologic Examination by : Alfred Kestenbaum
Download or read book Clinical Methods of Neuro-Ophthalmologic Examination written by Alfred Kestenbaum and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Clinical Methods of Neuro-Ophthalmologic Examination presents the clinical methods of ophthalmologic examination that may be helpful in neurologic differential diagnosis. Neuro-ophthalmologic examination has developed in two directions: the more precise methods and the unrefined yet fairly exact methods, such as diagnostic measurement by means of a simple ruler. This book is based on lectures delivered by the author to neurologists and ophthalmologists. This book is composed of 13 chapters and begins with a presentation of anatomic details that are important for the understanding of the various signs and symptoms. The next chapters examine the development of simple perimetry into quantitative perimetry and angio-scotometry, as well as the pathology of the optic nerve. Considerable chapters are devoted to intensive discussions on group of diseases that affect in a parallel way the central nervous system and the eye, such as chiasmal and retrochiasmal lesions, nystagmus, symmetrical eye movement disturbance, palpebral fissure, hemicrania. The final chapter outlines a routine neuro-ophthalmological examination. This book is directed toward neurologists and ophthalmologists.

Throughout the book, the pathology, examination, anesthesia, surgical treatment and nursing care of pediatric lens disorders are discussed in detail. It not only presents diverse pictures and images from clinical practice, it also includes the latest findings in the field. It will be of interest to ophthalmologists and paediatricians looking to improve the diagnosis and treatment of pediatric lens disorders and provide a valuable reference resource for all those involved in ophthalmic clinical practice, teaching and research.
Book Synopsis The Theory of Binocular Vision by : Ewald Hering
Download or read book The Theory of Binocular Vision written by Ewald Hering and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Theory of Binocular Vision is a book about neurological control theory. In this sense it was far ahead of its time, for the formal development of control theory was many decades in the future when this book appeared in 1868. Hering's principal concept is that the control of eye movements is greatly simplified if there is only one neurological control system commanding the 'double-eye' as a single organ. This idea leads directly to the first thorough exposition of what is now known as Hering's law, that the corresponding muscles of the two eyes are always equally innervated. As Hering eloquently states it, "one and the same impulse of will directs both eyes simultaneously as one can direct a pair of horses with single reins" (Ch. 2). The 19th Century The book was written during an exciting era for physiological research. Before the mid-19th century the study of physiology had been limited to isolated efforts by great men who worked largely without colleagues or organized laboratories. Now for the first time of inquiry, with many sensory physiology was becoming a living field groups working simultaneously on fundamental problems. Like the classical Greeks before them in philosophy, the physiologists of the 19th century were defining in a burst of creative energy the problems 1 2 Introduction which would shape subsequent inquiry; and like the Greeks, they produced a splendid period of science.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains summaries of most of the invited presentations given by lecturers and participants at the NATO Advanced Study Institute, "Develop mental Neurobiology of Vision," held in Rethymnon, Crete, Greece 18-27 Sep tember 1978. The purpose of this meeting was to enable a relatively small international group of scientists and students to hold discussions and to present their views on current problems in the field. It was intended that the results of the exchanges would be conveyed to others in the native countries of the parti cipants. An attempt was made to obtain broad representation of disciplines within the area of the Institute and this is reflected in the diversity of the chapters in this book. Considerable interest has been generated in recent years concerning the development and plasticity of vision. Perhaps not unexpectedly, along with the high level of activity in this field, there have been so me controversial findings.
