Book Synopsis Encyclopedic Dictionary of Roman Law by : Adolf Berger
Download or read book Encyclopedic Dictionary of Roman Law written by Adolf Berger and published by American Philosophical Society. This book was released on 2024-04 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Dictionary: explains technical Roman legal terms, translates & elucidate those Latin words which have a specific connotation when used in a juristic context or in connection with a legal institution or question, & provides a brief picture of Roman legal institutions & sources as a sort of an introduction to them. The objectives of the work, not the juristic character of available Latin writings, therefore, determined the inclusion or exclusion of any single word or phrase. This dict. is not intended to be a complete Latin-English dict. for all words which occur in the writings of the Roman jurists or in the various codifications of Roman law. The reader must consult a general Latin-English lexicon for ordinary words that have no specific meaning in law or juristic language. Reprinted 1980.
Book Synopsis The Invisible God by : Paul Corby Finney
Download or read book The Invisible God written by Paul Corby Finney and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1997 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This revisionist study challenges the received opinion that in its earliest manifestations Christianity was a form of religiosity opposed both on principle and in fact to the use of pictures. Paul Corby Finney argues that the well-known absence of Christian pictures before A.D. 200 is due to a complex interplay of social, economic, and political factors, and is not, as is commonly assumed, a result of an anti-image ideology. The book documents the origins of Christian art based on some of the oldest surviving Christian archaeological evidence, and it seeks to show how the Christian products conformed to the already-existing pagan types and models. This study will interest scholars and students in the fields of church history, ancient history, archaeology, art history, classics, and historical theology.

Book Synopsis The Roman Collegia by : Jonathan S. Perry
Download or read book The Roman Collegia written by Jonathan S. Perry and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2017-07-31 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume maintains that contemporary events, ideologies, and institutions have shaped scholarly work on the ancient Roman collegia, a group of institutions known principally from epigraphic and legal sources. It traces the origins of thinking on the subject from the creation of the Corpus Inscriptionum Latinarum through the political and social movements of the 19th and 20th centuries in Western Europe. The bulk of the book focuses particularly on the intersection of scholarship and economic theory in Fascist Italy, as the collegia were analysed by the Istituto di Studi Romani, incorporated into the Mostra Augustea della Romanità, and ultimately championed by the Minister of National Education, Giuseppe Bottai, in 1939.

Book Synopsis Voluntary Associations in the Graeco-Roman World by : John S. Kloppenborg
Download or read book Voluntary Associations in the Graeco-Roman World written by John S. Kloppenborg and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-09-11 with total page 447 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based upon a series of detailed case studies of associations such as early synagogues and churches, philosophical schools and pagan mystery cults, this collection addresses the question of what can legitimately be termed a 'voluntary association'. Employing modern sociological concepts, the essays show how the various associations were constituted, the extent of their membership, why people joined them and what they contributed to the social fabric of urban life. For many, those groups were the most significant feature of social life beyond family and work. All of them provided an outlet of religious as well as social commitments. Also included are studies of the way in which early Jewish and Christian groups adopted and adapted the models of private association available to them and how this affected their social status and role. Finally, the situation of women is discussed, as some of the voluntary associations offered them a more significant recognition than they received in society at large.
