Book Synopsis Properties and Characterization of Modern Materials by : Andreas Öchsner
Download or read book Properties and Characterization of Modern Materials written by Andreas Öchsner and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-07-30 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on robust characterization and prediction methods for materials in technical applications as well as the materials’ safety features during operation. In particular, it presents methods for reliably predicting material properties, an aspect that is becoming increasingly important as engineering materials are pushed closer and closer to their limits to boost the performance of machines and structures. To increase their engineering value, components are now designed under the consideration of their multiphysical properties and functions, which requires much more intensive investigation and characterization of these materials. The materials covered in this monograph range from metal-based groups such as lightweight alloys, to advanced high-strength steels and modern titanium alloys. Furthermore, a wide range of polymers and composite materials (e.g. with micro- and nanoparticles or fibres) is covered. The book explores methods for property prediction from classical mechanical characterization-related fields of application, for example, from wear, creep, fatigue and crack growth, to specific surface properties, to dielectric and electrochemical values. As in all fields of modern engineering, the process is often accompanied by numerical simulation and optimization.

Book Synopsis Relative Efficacy of Sodium Fluoride and Sodium Monofluorophosphate as Anti-caries Agents in Dentifrices by : William H. Bowen
Download or read book Relative Efficacy of Sodium Fluoride and Sodium Monofluorophosphate as Anti-caries Agents in Dentifrices written by William H. Bowen and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is universally agreed that there has been an enormous decline in the prevalence of dental caries in some segments of the community. This decline has, to a considerable degree, been attributed to the universal availability of fluoride, either in the public drinking water or through the use of fluoridated toothpastes. In many countries, water is not fluoridated, and clearly in such places, the decline is due to the prevalence of caries can be attributed to the use of fluoridated toothpastes.

Book Synopsis Adhesion between polymers and concrete / Adhésion entre polymères et béton by : H. R. Sasse

This book was released on 2013-11-27 with total page 761 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Preface Adhesion is a phenomenon architects and civil engineers are not very familiar with. In other disciplines knowledge about surface properties and the background of bonding energies is also far from satisfactory; nevertheless there are many important· applications in concrete engineering, where adhesion is necessary for success and durability. These include: - coating and painting - repair of concrete surfaces - bonding of fresh to old concrete - crack injection - glueing of precast elements - glueing of steel to concrete, etc. In 1981 RILEM established the technical committee 52-RAC 'Resin Adherence to Concrete'. The main aims of the committee's work were - to collect research results and practical experiences - to initiate and coordinate research programs - to develop, on a scientific base, test methods for field and for laboratory purposes. One of the results of the committee's work is a state-of-the-art report, which will be presented orally as a General Report at the International Symposium ISAP '86, and will be printed either in the RILEM journal Materials and Structures or separately. Several test recommendations have been elaborated and will be prepared as drafts for the participants ofISAP '86. These are: - direct tensile test - pull-off test - direct shear test - slant shear test - four-point bending test - dynamic loading test - thermal compatibility test (two versions) - injectibility test.

Book Synopsis An Introduction to Frozen Ground Engineering by : Orlando B. Andersland
Download or read book An Introduction to Frozen Ground Engineering written by Orlando B. Andersland and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Frozen Ground Engineering first introduces the reader to the frozen environment and the behavior of frozen soil as an engineering material. In subsequent chapters this information is used in the analysis and design of ground support systems, foundations, and embankments. These and other topics make this book suitable for use by civil engineering students in a one-semester course on frozen ground engineering at the senior or first-year-graduate level. Students are assumed to have a working knowledge of undergraduate mechanics (statics and mechanics of materials) and geotechnical engineering (usual two-course sequence). A knowledge of basic geology would be helpful but is not essential. This book will also be useful to advanced students in other disciplines and to engineers who desire an introduction to frozen ground engineering or references to selected technical publications in the field. BACKGROUND Frozen ground engineering has developed rapidly in the past several decades under the pressure of necessity. As practical problems involving frozen soils broadened in scope, the inadequacy of earlier methods for coping became increasingly apparent. The application of ground freezing to geotechnical projects throughout the world continues to grow as significant advances have been made in ground freezing technology. Freezing is a useful and versatile technique for temporary earth support, groundwater control in difficult soil or rock strata, and the formation of subsurface containment barriers suitable for use in groundwater remediation projects.
