Book Synopsis Contemporary Trotskyism by : John Kelly
Download or read book Contemporary Trotskyism written by John Kelly and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-03-14 with total page 524 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Almost 80 years after Leon Trotsky founded the Fourth International, there are now Trotskyist organizations in 57 countries, including most of Western Europe and Latin America. Yet no Trotskyist group has ever led a revolution or built an enduring mass, political party. Contemporary Trotskyism looks in detail at the influence, resilience and weaknesses of the British Trotskyist movement, from the 1970s to the present day. The book argues that to understand and explain the development, resilience and influence of Trotskyist groups, we need to analyse them as bodies that comprise elements of three types of organization: the political party, the sect and the social movement. It is the properties of these three facets of organization and the interplay between them that gives rise to the most characteristic features of the Trotskyist movement: frenetic activity, rampant divisions, inter-organizational hostility, authoritarian and charismatic leadership, high membership turnover and ideological rigidity. Trotskyist groups have been involved in a wide range of important social movements including trade unions, student unions, anti-war, anti-racist and anti-fascist groups. While their energy and activity in civil society have had some success, their influence has never been reflected in votes or seats at elections even after the financial crisis. Drawing on extensive archival research, as well as interviews with many of the leading protagonists and activists within the Trotskyist milieu, this is essential reading for students, activists and researchers with an interest in the far left, social movements and contemporary British political history.

Book Synopsis History of British Trotskyism by : Ted Grant
Download or read book History of British Trotskyism written by Ted Grant and published by Wellred Books. This book was released on with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book by Ted Grant is a unique contribution to the history of British Trotskyism. It begins with the debate on Trotskyism in the British Communist Party in 1924 and ends with the break-up of the Revolutionary Communist Party in 1949 and the beginning of more than thirty years of work within the Labour Party. Ted Grant was the founder and political leader of the “Militant Tendency”, which haunted the Labour leadership, and was eventually expelled along with the Militant editorial board in 1983. A postscript by Rob Sewell, who was the national organiser for the Militant throughout the 1980s, brings this unique history up to date.

Book Synopsis Conversations with Trotsky by : Bruce Nesbitt
Download or read book Conversations with Trotsky written by Bruce Nesbitt and published by University of Ottawa Press. This book was released on 2017-05-09 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection presents all of Earle Birney’s known published and unpublished writings on Trotsky and Trotskyism for the very first time. It includes their correspondence as well as a selection of Birney’s letters and literary writings. Before he became one of Canada’s most influential and popular twentieth century poets, Earle Birney lived a double life. To his students and colleagues, he was an engaging university lecturer and scholar. But for seven years—from 1933 to 1940—the great Russian revolutionary Leon Trotsky was the focus of his writing and much of his life. During his years as a Trotskyist in Canada, the United States and England, Birney wrote extensively about Trotsky, corresponded with him, organized Trotskyist cells in two countries, and recruited on behalf of Trotskyism; he also lectured on Trotsky and interviewed him over the course of several days. One of his two novels is based on some of these activities. The collection traces the origins of Trotsky’s mistrust of “the British” to his experiences in Canada; shows Birney’s influence on a major shift in Trotsky’s policy of “entrism” in British politics; includes the largest body of Trotskyist criticism in Canadian literary history; and demonstrates the need for a radical re-reading of Birney’s poetry in light of his Trotskyism.

Download or read book Stalin written by Leon Trotsky and published by Haymarket Books. This book was released on 2019-07-02 with total page 1155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On 20th August 1940 Trotsky’s life was brutally ended when a Stalinist agent brought an ice pick crashing down on his head. Among the works left unfinished was the second part of his biography of Stalin. Trotsky’s Stalin is unique in Marxist literature in that it attempts to explain some of the most decisive events of the 20th century, not just in terms of epoch-making economic and social transformations, but in the individual psychology of one of the protagonists in a great historical drama. It is a fascinating study of the way in which the peculiar character of an individual, his personal traits and psychology, interacts with great events. How did it come about that Stalin, who began his political life as a revolutionary and a Bolshevik, ended as a tyrant and a monster? Was this something pre-ordained by genetic factors or childhood upbringing? Drawing on a mass of carefully assembled material from his personal archives and many other sources, Trotsky provides the answer to these questions. In the present edition we have brought together all the material that was available from the Trotsky archives in English and supplemented it with additional material translated from Russian. It is the most complete version of the book that has ever been published.
Book Synopsis Trotsky and the Problem of Soviet Bureaucracy by : Thomas M. Twiss
Download or read book Trotsky and the Problem of Soviet Bureaucracy written by Thomas M. Twiss and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2014-05-08 with total page 514 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the twentieth century the problem of post-revolutionary bureaucracy emerged as the most pressing theoretical and political concern confronting Marxism. No one contributed more to the discussion of this question than Leon Trotsky. In Trotsky and the Problem of Soviet Bureaucracy, Thomas M. Twiss traces the development of Trotsky’s thinking on this issue from the first years after the Bolshevik Revolution through the Moscow Trials of the 1930s. Throughout, he examines how Trotsky’s perception of events influenced his theoretical understanding of the problem, and how Trotsky’s theory reciprocally shaped his analysis of political developments. Additionally, Twiss notes both strengths and weaknesses of Trotsky’s theoretical perspective at each stage in its development.

Book excerpt: In response to criticism from Soviet politician Karl Radek, Leon Trotsky wrote the essay "The Permanent Revolution". Following Trotsky's expulsion from the Communist Party of the Soviet Union in 1927, The Left Opposition released the text in Russian. This was written following the death of Vladimir Lenin, which started a power struggle among the Communist Party of the Soviet Union's military, bureaucratic, and legislative branches. General Secretary Joseph Stalin created a political partnership with Trotsky opponents Lev Kamenev, Zinnoviev, and Nikolai Bukharin inside The Politburo and The Central Committee. Stalin's bloc followed an isolationist ideology known as Socialism in One Country, which prioritized economic growth above global upheaval.
