Book excerpt: This volume, which is rooted in biogeophysical studies, addresses conceptions of political action in the Anthropocene and the tension between a desire to accomplish the Promethean project of modernity and a post-Promethean approach. This work explores the idea of an anthropological mutation of political consolidation from a “post-Promethean togetherness”, to creating the capacity to act together. The political thinking of the human condition developed by Hannah Arendt is important here as a resource for thinking about humanity in terms of human adventure. This has three dimensions: hubris, the world and coexistence referring respectively to the logic of profit of the homo oeconomicus, the logic of responsibility of the homo collectivus and the logic of the hospitality of the homo religatus. The intellectual and political attitude outlined in this book is an extension of critical theory: the work also puts forward a critique of what poses a problem in our relationship to the world and suggests how to overcome it, the ultimate goal being social transformation. The author propose an uprising and an anthropological consolidation of politics based on the revitalization that is brought about by the sharing of a conviviality both between humans and with what is non-human. The identification of conviviality as an educational paradigm to survive the Anthropocene gives us the much needed reason for hope despite this heritage of the Anthropocene. In addition to Arendtian thinking, this critical theory for the Anthropocene draws on the political thinking of several contemporary authors including Maurice Bellet, Hartmut Rosa, Andreas Weber, Dominique Bourg, and Christian Arnsperger. This volume is of interest to researchers in the Anthropocene.

Even though a form of research is inherent to artistic creation, the creative process is not comparable to the established procedures involved in academic research. As such, how can the imperatives of intellectual (and sometimes restrictive) rigour characteristic of scholarly endeavours be reconciled with the more explorative and intuitive approach of artistic creation? The concept of 'research-creation' allows artists and scholars to collaborate on a common project, acknowledging each participant’s expertise in the production of an artistic work that either generates theoretical reflections or has emerged from academic research. This fully revised and updated translation of Sophie Stévance and Serge Lacasse’s original French book offers an overview of the historical, political, social, cultural and academic contexts within which research-creation has emerged in Quebec and Canada, before similar (yet often divergent) conceptions appeared elsewhere in the world. Focussing primarily on the case of music, the book goes on to explore the pedagogical potential of research-creation within a university-based environment and proposes a clear and encompassing definition, as well as a theoretical model, of research-creation supported by concrete examples. Book excerpt: Revenant sur un parcours professionnel fortement marqué par des fonctions de directions d'administrations de mission au sein de l'Education Nationale, ce travail suggère une modélisation identitaire, questionnant l'itinéraire d'un chercheur autour de quatre pôles : l'éthique, la formation, la méthode et la pragmatique. Ce travail conduit dans le cadre de l'HDR, est l'occasion d'en réfléchir certains aspects : multiréférentialité (méthode), transdisciplinarité (formation) et hiérarchies enchevêtrées. Celles-ci constituent le cœur même de la complexité propre aux affaires humaines. Elle relie, dans une autoréférentialité de second ordre, deux niveaux de réalité apparaissant comme étant produit et producteur de l'autre. Les conceptions de l'éducation et de la formation émergent dans l'entre deux de ces boucles étranges, l'une reliant connaissance et expérience, l'autre société et individu. Reconnaître l'émergence de la société ou de la connaissance à partir de la composition des actions ou des expériences humaines ne suffit pas à garantir la prise en compte de ces enchevêtrements. La tentation est grande, soit, d'instituer la société et/ou la connaissance comme instance hétéronome, soit, a contrario d'entrer dans l'utopie de la toute puissance réduisant l'agir et le connaître au « faire ». Toutefois, l'observation solidaire du vivant et du monde social nous conduit à faire émerger une voie moyenne : celle de l'autonomie. Elle participe de la conjonction pour chaque niveau, de deux processus paradoxaux, la participation (ou l'engagement) et l'interprétation, qui permettent une compréhension rationnelle rendue « convenable » de ces enchevêtrements. La pragmatique du chercheur peut s'en trouver bouleversée. Rencontrant, sur le champ de l'éducation et de la formation, les sciences de l'autonomie, il ne peut se contenter d'un « factum verum » assurant une compréhension a posteriori pas plus que de formes ou de savoirs livrés « clés en main ». Il convient alors de prendre la figure de l'ingénieur et de l'intervenant pour construire des artefacts actualisant versus potentialisant de l'autonomie des sujets-acteurs. Ayant en distinguant - reliant , consciemment, les hiérarchies enchevêtrées du champ par les modélisations compréhensives et les artefacts construits, le chercheur est conduit à prendre le recul et la retenue de l'attitude philosophique et épistémologique, nécessaire à la suspension du jugement phénoménologique pour retrouver le sens de la chose vécue en soi, tout en les rendant « enseignables » sans trop trahir la complexité des affaires humaines.
