Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The New Testament is crossed by an incredible narrative tension. The poetic language allows this tension to be highlighted: it paints the features of an epic of salvation through plays of images, symbols, and emotions, and gives the texts a new intensity. While this collection does not require any preliminary biblical knowledge, the latter will help to grasp its full meaning. The reader can choose a systematic reading from the beginning or go directly to the heart of the collection by reading the poems concerning the passion and resurrection, starting from "Gethsemane." They will then understand what reading the book can bring them. As with the collection Beginnings, which precedes it, the poems are given in the original language they were first written (French) and in their translation into English. The people who can read French will be able to appreciate the musicality inherent in their composition. The English reader will be able to appreciate the general aesthetics of the images and the description of the emotions faithfully rendered by the translation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The hermeneutic path involved in the interpretation of law as well as in the interpretation of sacred texts, though peculiar, seems - as Emilio Betti pointed out - to share several things, most importantly the "normative" nature of interpretation. The 1999 issue of the Yearbook "Ars Interpretandi" accounts for the several and disparate relationships between these two important "regional hermeneutics".

Book Synopsis Le Cycle de ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib by : Aomar Hannouz
Download or read book Le Cycle de ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib written by Aomar Hannouz and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2024-02-06 with total page 491 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims to demonstrate that the accounts that feature Muḥammad’s grandfather in Ibn Isḥāq’s Sīra are the product of narrative engineering. Through a narrative sequence in which ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib is the hero, several intriguing episodes follow one another in a causal manner and lead to the birth of a future prophet. Articulated with a historical anthropology, the narrative analysis reveals that the Sīra is the heir to the royal literature of the ancient Near East. Using motifs and themes from the culture of the Fertile Crescent, the Sīra makes ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib a royal figure in the service of legitimising the Abbasid dynasty, heir par excellence to Ishmael and restorer of the Abrahamic covenant.
Book Synopsis Ancient and Modern Scriptural Historiography by : George J. Brooke
Download or read book Ancient and Modern Scriptural Historiography written by George J. Brooke and published by Peeters. This book was released on 2007 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of nineteen essays is the fruit of ongoing collaboration in Biblical Studies between the Universities of Geneva, Lausanne, Manchester and Sheffield. The essays are arranged under three headings (General Studies; Hebrew Bible and Early Judaism; and New Testament, Early Christianity and their Contexts) but share many overlapping interests. In particular, the studies show intriguingly that the concerns of ancient historians are both similar to and different from those of modern historians. Several contributions also demonstrate that the historical value of ancient texts can only become apparent if they are set alongside suitable co-texts, whether from Mesopotamia, from Greek and Roman writings, or from other sources. In addition it is clear in some of the contributions that the interplay between authors and readers is no less significant in history writing than in the production of other genres. Overall the set of essays shows forcefully that history writing, in antiquity as today, is principally about the meaning of the past for the present, only secondarily about the past for its own sake.
Book Synopsis Hermeneutics and Catechesis by : Robert J. Hurley
Download or read book Hermeneutics and Catechesis written by Robert J. Hurley and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 1997 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work examines aspects of a religious education program published by Paulist Press in the 1960s and 1970s, the Come to the Father series. This is the only study of this major catechetical series. The author examines the interpretation of the Bible in a confessional setting, and explores the history of the modern catechetical renewal in Canada and beyond. The author also critiques the way in which the Come to the Father series exploits the reader's experience in its interpretation of the Bible.
