Book Synopsis Bernard of Clairvaux by : Anthony N.S. Lane
Download or read book Bernard of Clairvaux written by Anthony N.S. Lane and published by Liturgical Press. This book was released on 2013-01-25 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a complete study of the doctrine of the cross in the writings of Saint Bernard of Clairvaux. Until now, this theologically rich topic has not received the attention it calls for. Anthony Lane analyzes and expounds the doctrine of the cross based on the nearly seven hundred references to the cross in Bernard's writings. Among the important topics the author explores are: * Bernard's letter against Abelard, a work of central significance for this topic * the "usward" aspect of Christ's work, its subjective influence on us, and the "Godward" aspect, the way in which the cross puts us right with God * objections to this teaching posed by Abelard and others * ways in which Bernard applies his doctrine of the cross * a concluding assessment of Bernard's teaching on the topic
Download or read book Evolution written by Bradford McCall and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2020-07-15 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Should we attempt to understand (macro-)evolutionary biology, in the twenty-first century, as secular or sacred? This book will attempt to answer this question by exploring the secular evolutionary worldview, the author's view of kenotic-causation, Whitehead's views on chance, Derrida's views on non-human animals, a statement upon the God of chance and purpose, Augustine's various theologies of creation, a decidedly non-dualistic (macro-)evolution, a provocative thesis regarding evolutionary Christology, the connection between kenosis and emergence, and an explication of both Anders Nygren and Thomas Jay Oord's views of love in the contemporary environ. It also develops the author's personal view regarding necessary, kenotically-donated, and self-giving love, and argues that kenosis and emergence can add to the discussion of understanding the theology-science-love symbiosis. It advocates and explicates herein a monistic process-based view of the overlapping relationship between theology and science.
Book Synopsis Continuity and Discontinuity in Early Christian Apologetics by : Jörg Ulrich
Download or read book Continuity and Discontinuity in Early Christian Apologetics written by Jörg Ulrich and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2009 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains the contributions to a workshop on apologetics in early Christianity which took place at the Fifteenth International Conference on Patristic Studies in Oxford in the summer of 2007. The workshop was arranged by scholars from Germany, Finland and Denmark who had for some time worked together in a project on early Christian apologetics. The aim of the workshop was thus to present and discuss some of the results and still unsolved problems which arose from this project. The book presents the contributions to the workshop. Hereby the editors hope to reach a larger audience and thus to be able to further the discussion of the topic of early Christian apologetics.
Book Synopsis Irenaeus and Genesis by : Thomas Holsinger-Friesen
Download or read book Irenaeus and Genesis written by Thomas Holsinger-Friesen and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2009-06-23 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Irenaeus, the second-century bishop of Lyons, left such an impression upon the church that he is sometimes considered to be theology’s “founding father.” After all, his legacy includes such theological landmarks as the regula fidei (or “rule of faith”) and the doctrine of recapitulation. Although these ought not to be minimized, we may gain a new appreciation for this early bishop by highlighting a facet of his work that is even more central: the distinctive shape of the hermeneutic guiding his readings of sacred texts as Christian Scripture. Within the contemporary climate of twenty-first century theology, the reopening of questions of power, truth, authenticity, and holism points to a critique of hermeneutical process (not just theological end-product). In Irenaeus’s day, Gnostic Christians on the fringe of the church offered a vision of the telos of faith that many found compelling. Responding to this challenge required Irenaeus to articulate an even more satisfying Christian theology and anthropology on the basis of Scripture and received apostolic tradition. In this battle of hermeneutics, both sides considered protological texts such as Genesis 1:26 and 2:7 to be indispensible. Through a sympathetic reading, then, of Irenaeus and his competitors, we aim to better understand why Irenaeus’s biblical interpretations ultimately were deemed more plausible, faithful, and fruitful within the mainstream of the church.

Book Synopsis Christianity in Roman Scythia by : Ionuț Holubeanu
Download or read book Christianity in Roman Scythia written by Ionuț Holubeanu and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2024-01-15 with total page 503 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At present, there is no scholarly consensus on the ecclesiastical organization in the Roman province of Scythia (4th-7th centuries). This volume proposes a new interpretation of some of the historical evidence concerning the evolution of the see of Tomi: a great metropolis, first with suffragan bishoprics outside Roman Scythia and then inside it, and later an autocephalous archbishopric. Though there are also many unclear aspects regarding the evolution of monastic life in the province, this book reveals that, in contrast with the development of the monastic infrastructure in Roman Scythia, a spiritual decline began in the mid-5th century.

Book Synopsis This Earthly Life Matters by : Arnold A. van Ruler
Download or read book This Earthly Life Matters written by Arnold A. van Ruler and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2023-06-06 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arnold A. van Ruler was one of the most original Dutch Reformed theologians of the twentieth century. Through the term "re-creation" (Dutch: herschepping) he offers a radical affirmation of God's sustained loyalty to that which is material, bodily, and earthly. God's work of salvation and of consummation is necessary but then for the sake of creation. The path that he followed was diametrically opposed to that of Karl Barth and is also distinct from that of Jurgen Moltmann (who was influenced by Van Ruler). As an early exponent of Christian ecotheology, Van Ruler's oeuvre provides exceptionally rich resources for contemporary debates. This volume offers an English translation of selected essays by Van Ruler on the themes of God, creation, providence, humanity, sin, this earthly life, and animal protection. It includes some famous essays, for example, on God and chaos, the "sunny side of sin," joy as the fundamental Christian attitude to life, and this earthly life. The selection is based on volume 3 of the Dutch scholarly edition of Van Ruler's Collected Works (published in 11 volumes). Few of Van Ruler's texts are available in English, so this volume provides a welcome addition.

Book Synopsis Eastern Fathers of the 4th Century by : Fr. Georges Florovsky
Download or read book Eastern Fathers of the 4th Century written by Fr. Georges Florovsky and published by Vladimir Djambov. This book was released on 2020-04-06 with total page 507 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Wealth without work Pleasure without conscience Science without humanity Knowledge without character Politics without principle Commerce without morality Worship without sacrifice. https://vidjambov.blogspot.com/2023/01/book-inventory-vladimir-djambov-talmach.html With the beginning of the IV century, a new era opens in the life of the Church. The empire in the person of the Equal-to-the-Apostles Caesar receives baptism. The Church emerges from its forced closure and accepts the exacting ancient world under its sacred vaults. /// “Teaching that each name is assigned its own meaning, because names are signs of named objects…” “When in the Trinity it is necessary to make an unreadable idea for yourself according to distinctive signs,” St. Basil says – “then to the definition of a distinctive one we take what is not imaginable at all, such as, for example, “non-creation” or “intangibleness” to any concepts, or the like, but we will look for one that will separate each person’s concept clearly and unmistakably from that which is presented together” – this special and distinctive (identifiable) sign… And “until the thought reaches an unadulterated idea of the personal properties of each, it is impossible for it to give thanks to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit,” St. Basil concludes. It must be emphasized, St. Basil demands the confession of three hypostases, he emphasizes the concept of hypostasis and is not satisfied with the mere recognition of “three persons.” For the concept of “person” is devoid of the certainty that is introduced in to the concept of “hypostasis” by the very etymology of the word – with the suffix giving the root meaning a shade of static but not dynamic (not procedural). “He who shies away from the expression of “three hypostases,” St. Basil remarks, “is compelled to profess only a difference of faces… and does not avoid Savelli’s evil, for Savelli, merging concepts in every possible way, intensified the separation of faces, saying that the same hypostasis is transformed according to every need.” The concept of hypostasis of St. Basil seeks to exclude any shade of such a fluid transformation, it seeks to emphasize that the Three Each have “own being”.
