Part Three investigates six major shrines, from Philae's diverse non-Christian devotees to the great pilgrim center of Abu Mina and a Thecla shrine on its route. Part Four looks at such diverse pilgrims' rites as oracles, chant, and stational liturgy, while Part Five brings in Athanasius's and an anonymous hagiographer's perspectives on pilgrimage in Egypt. Book Synopsis Codex Des Restes Végétaux de L'Égypte Ancienne by : Christian de Vartavan
Download or read book Codex Des Restes Végétaux de L'Égypte Ancienne written by Christian de Vartavan and published by Sais. This book was released on 1997 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There have been very few comprehensive studies of the ancient flora of Egypt and most of these have been interpretive syntheses of data. In this book, the authors present a codex of more than 4,600 identifications of Egyptian plant remains, bringing together material from more than 350 archaeobotanical reports. The entries, which come from the Palaeolithic to Islamic and Ottoman periods, are listed alphabetically, with the genus or family name, date, the name of the specialist making the identification, references, provenance and other information. A short introduction is given in French and English although there is no other commentary or interpretation of the evidence. Written for the botanist and non-botanist, although highly specialised.
Book Synopsis The Gods of Egypt by : Claude Traunecker
Download or read book The Gods of Egypt written by Claude Traunecker and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Gods of Egypt, first published in France in 1992 and now in its third French edition, is a short, elegant, and highly accessible survey of ancient Egyptian religion. The clarity and brevity of Claude Traunecker's book make it especially valuable to readers seeking an authoritative introduction to this complex topic. The Cornell edition, the first English translation, is enhanced by 23 illustrations. Traunecker begins with an overview of the source materials and a discussion of the historiography of Egyptian religion, a subject relatively neglected by scholars. He then describes the actual and metaphysical worlds inhabited by the Egyptian deities and the role that humans played in the Egyptian universe. Focusing especially on the diversity and number of approaches used by Egyptians to explain their world, The Gods of Egypt offers a succinct and highly readable presentation of recent interpretations of Egyptian religion.

Book Synopsis The Egerton Gospel (Egerton Papyrus 2 + Papyrus Köln VI 255) by : Lorne R. Zelyck
Download or read book The Egerton Gospel (Egerton Papyrus 2 + Papyrus Köln VI 255) written by Lorne R. Zelyck and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2019-09-16 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this commentary on the Egerton Gospel, Lorne R. Zelyck presents a fresh paleographical analysis and thorough reconstruction of the fragmentary text, which results in new readings and interpretations. Details surrounding the acquisition of the manuscript are presented for the first time, and various scholarly viewpoints on controversial topics, such as the date of composition and relationship to the canonical gospels, are addressed. This early apocryphal gospel (150-250 CE) provides traditional interpretations of the canonical gospels that are similar to those of other early Christian authors, and affirms Jesus’ continuity with the miracle-working prophets Moses and Elisha, his obedience to the Law, divinity, and violent rejection by Jewish opponents.

Book Synopsis The Abu Bakr Cemetery at Giza by : Edward Brovarski
Download or read book The Abu Bakr Cemetery at Giza written by Edward Brovarski and published by Lockwood Press. This book was released on 2021-07-31 with total page 697 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present volume reflects the work of the joint expedition of Cairo University and Brown University to record and publish the tombs uncovered on behalf of Cairo University by Prof. Abdel-Moneim Abu Bakr from 1949 through 1953, but never published. The loss of field records and lack of a map of the site meant that new, salvage excavation had to be undertaken. A total of six seasons, from 2000-2006 resulted in the clearing, remapping, and recording of the monuments in the cemetery. Abu Bakr Cemetery is of particular interest because the majority of mastaba tombs belong to relatively low-ranking individuals. Thus they have the potential to she light on the social status of Egypt's working classes.

Download or read book Beyond Egyptomania written by Miguel John Versluys and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2020-06-08 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The material and intellectual presence of Egypt is at the heart of Western culture, religion and art from Antiquity to the present. This volume aims to provide a long term and interdisciplinary perspective on Egypt and its mnemohistory, taking theories on objects and their agency as its main point of departure. The central questions the book addresses are why, from the first millennium BC onwards, things and concepts Egyptian are to be found in such a great variety of places throughout European history and how we can account for their enduring impact over time. By taking a radically object-oriented perspective on this question, this book is also a major contribution to current debates on the agency of artefacts across archaeology, anthropology and art history.
