Book excerpt: “A well-informed, compelling compilation of the ‘up close and personal’ side of the Vietnam War . . . [a] masterful chronicle of first person stories” (Vice Admiral David B. Robinson, USN, Ret., Navy Cross recipient). Every war continues to dwell in the lives it touched, in the lives of those living through that time, and in those absorbed by its historical significance. The Vietnam War lives on—famously or infamously, depending on political points of view—but those who have “been there, done that” have a highly personalized window on their time of that history. Valor in Vietnam focuses on nineteen stories of Vietnam, stories of celebrated figures in the veteran community, compelling war narratives, vignettes of battles, and the emotional impact on the combatants. It is replete with leadership lessons and valuable insights that are just as applicable today as they were forty years ago. This is an anecdotal history of America’s war in Vietnam composed of firsthand narratives by Vietnam War veterans presented in chronological order. They are intense, emotional, and highly personal stories. Connecting each of them is a brief historical commentary of that period of the war, the geography of the story, and the contemporary strategy written by Lewis Sorley, West Point class of 1956, and author of A Better War and Westmoreland. With a foreword by Lt. Gen. Dave R. Palmer, US Army (Ret.), Valor in Vietnam presents an overview of the war through the eyes of participants in each branch of service and throughout the entire course of the war. Simply put, their stories serve to reflect the commitment, honor, and dedication with which America’s veterans performed their service.

Book excerpt: There are many books about war. There are books that describe the bravery and glories of war. Other books portray the warrior as an "anti-hero". The Pipes Were Calling: A Vietnam War Story is not either of these formula tales. The Pipes Were Calling tells the story of a boy, 18 year old and fresh from high school who is drafted and then sent to fight in Vietnam. He has no combat experience or Hollywood scriptwriters. To survive, he must quickly learn the rules of war. Danny Murphy learns these rules, experiences combat, endures the deaths of friends, and engages in the black humor of crises. We share his experiences as he goes from "newbie" to veteran, then finally to civilian. Danny's story is told with honesty and humor, hopefully leaving us with a clearer understanding of war.

Book excerpt: Foreword by Chuck Hagel, former Secretary of Defense and Senator from NebraskaAdaptable. Cunning. Ferocious. Fearless. The Indochinese tiger is just one of the formidable predators roaming Vietnam's jungle. In 1966 a small band of US Special Forces soldiers--most especially Bennie Adkins--spent four grueling days facing down the "tiger" among them. While the rain and mist of an early March moved over the valley, then-Sergeant First Class Bennie Adkins and sixteen other Green Berets found themselves holed up in an undermanned and unfortified position at Camp A Shau, a small training and reconnaissance camp located right next to the infamous Ho Chi Minh Trail, North Vietnam's major supply route. And with the rain came the North Vietnamese Army in force. Surrounded 10-to-1, the Green Berets endured constant mortar and rifle fire, direct assaults, treasonous allies, and volatile jungle weather. But there was one among them who battled ferociously, like a tiger, and when they finally evacuated, he carried the wounded to safety. Forty-eight years later, Command Sergeant Major Bennie Adkins's valor was recognized when he received this nation's highest military award, the Medal of Honor. Filled with the sights, smells, and sounds of a raging battle fought in the middle of a tropical forest, A Tiger among Us is a riveting tale of bravery, valor, skill, and resilience

Book excerpt: For anyone who believes that good guys finish last, Blue's Bastard's is a true story of bravery and courage that did not go unrewarded. Under The command of combat leader Oliver North, author Randy Herrod accomplished what some say is The greatest deed one can perform-risking his life to save another. The life he saved was Oliver North's, dragging his wounded leader from The line of fire to safety. Later, when Herrod was on trial for The accidental deaths of Vietnamese civilians, Marine Lieutenant North knew it was time to repay The favor. Assisting with his own investigation, he returned to Vietnam, joined Herrod's defense team, and brought him justice-by helping prove his innocence. Blue's Bastards is an inspiring story of duty and obligation, and of honorable men defending their ideals both on The battlefield and in The courtroom, and, for once, winning.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although these stories are fiction, they are based on my experiences during my three tours of duty in Vietnam. Even the story about the Viet Cong soldier is based on things that I saw in the boonies that the enemy had built and things that the enemy did while I was there. I served in Vietnam from 1966 to 1968, twenty six months, and I was able to see Vietnam from three very different assignments. My first tour of eleven months was in the jungle with the 101st Airborne Division doing mostly search and destroy missions. My second tour was at E Company Support Battalion, at the base camp of the 101st Airborne Division and my third tour of duty was as a security guard with the elite Saigon Machine Gun Patrol. I tried to show with this book how very different tours of duty in a combat zone can be, depending on what job the soldier is assigned to. My three tours ran the gamut from living in the jungle for weeks and even months at a time hunting men, to living in a hotel with maid service in Saigon as an elite security guard, guarding the MPs and escorting Generals and other VIPs through the streets of Saigon at night with my machine gun jeep. This being a work of fiction, I was able to create plots that hopefully made the stories more exciting.
