Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the brightest Canadian scientists of his generation, Omond McKillop Solandt was a physiologist by training, an engineer by disposition, and a manager by necessity. A protégé of insulin’s co-discoverer, Charles Best, Solandt worked as a scientist for the British government during the Second World War, including as a pioneer of operational research and a manager of scientific establishments. Ending the war as a colonel, he served on the British Mission to Japan, where he studied the effects of the atomic bombs at Hiroshima and Nagasaki, before returning to Canada to become chairman of the newly created Defence Research Board. There he spearheaded Canada’s attempt to create a new and innovative government science infrastructure that served the needs of the Canadian military at the dawn of the nuclear age and worked alongside allies in Britain and the United States. In Maestro of Science, Jason S. Ridler draws on interviews with Solandt and his colleagues and declassified records from Canada and the United Kingdom to paint a vivid picture of the influence and achievements of a Canadian leader in Cold War military research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The life of rock's most durable troubadour in his own words Neil Young on Neil Young: Interviews and Encounters is a revealing anthology of Young's most significant, fascinating, and entertaining discussions, declarations, and dreams, chronicling fifty years of conversations, feature stories, and press conferences. With many interviews widely available for the first time—including new transcriptions and first-time translations into English—the book spans Young's words and ideas from 1967 onward: his early days with Buffalo Springfield and 1970s Harvest-fueled celebrity apex, an artistic rebellion and 1980s commercial dip, and the unexpected 1990s revival as the Godfather of Grunge through to his multi-decade victory lap as a living legend. Across the decades, Young's own words tell the story as he perpetually reinvents himself as a master of music and film, a technology pioneer and innovator, and a bold political observer and strident environmental advocate.

Book excerpt: A charming collection of Bridgeport stories and historic images bring this eccentric, enchanting history to life. In the late nineteenth century, P.T. Barnum was known worldwide for his traveling circus, but to the city of Bridgeport he meant much more. The city's mayor and benefactor, Barnum was also a mastermind at urban planning. Thus, amid Bridgeport's growing industrial factories, orchestras played from the bandstand at Seaside Park and bucolic hills surrounded Bunnell's Pond. In this collection of narratives, Eric D. Lehman captures the city's natural beauty and richly eccentric history. From the brave women of the Black Rock Lighthouse to war heroes of 'the nation's arsenal', from 'the tiniest general', Tom Thumb, to the tragic death of Jumbo the elephant, these are the best stories from Connecticut's 'Park City.'

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Jerry Brown (1942-2016) was a nationally recognized folk potter based in Hamilton, Alabama, whose family has been making pottery in the South since the 1830s. Traditionally, southern potters made utilitarian objects necessary for rural life. As a boy, Brown and his brother learned the family's timeworn methods and techniques helping their father in his shop, including tending the mule that drove the mill that mixed clay. Business suffered as demand for stoneware churns, jugs, and chamber pots waned in the postwar years, and manufacture ceased following the deaths of Brown's father and brother in the mid-1960s. Brown turned to logging for his livelihood, his skill with mules proving useful in working difficult and otherwise inaccessible terrain. In the early 1980s, he returned to the family trade and opened a new shop that relied on the same methods of production with which he had grown up, including a mule-powered mill for mixing clay and the use of a wood-fired rather than gas-fueled kiln. He stayed in logging for a few more years, but pottery soon became Brown's main occupation. Folklorist Joey Brackner met Brown in 1983 while researching traditional Alabama pottery for the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts and the Alabama State Council for the Arts. The two quickly became close friends and collaborated together on a variety of documentary and educational projects in succeeding years-efforts which led to greater exposure, commercial success, and Brown's recognition as a National Heritage Fellow by the National Endowment for the Arts in 1992. These developments were part of a larger overall trend as the utilitarian origins of traditional craft practices evolved into more explicitly creative and cultural forms of practice. Arts and crafts fairs cropped up around the country, and Brown adapted accordingly, specializing in collectible crowd-pleasers like face jugs and eventually launching the Jerry Brown Arts Festival, which takes place in Hamilton every spring. For years, Brown spoke of the urge to write a book, but never set pen to paper. In 2015, Brackner took the bull by the horns, interviewing Brown and recording his life story over the course of a weekend. Although Brown died suddenly the following year, Jerry Brown Pottery remains in operation, managed by Brown's wife, stepson, and his family. Of Mules and Mud is the story of Jerry Brown's life in his words as recounted in those recorded sessions, lightly edited and elaborated, and illustrated with photos from all phases of Brown's life"--

Book excerpt: In the 1970s, as car enthusiasts in the U.S. grew bored with models manufactured under tightening pollution and safety regulations, some innovative dealers exploited a legal loophole--designed to allow U.S. soldiers and diplomats to return from abroad with their vehicles--to import exotic cars never intended for sale in America. During the 1980s, a rise in the value of the dollar made car shopping in Europe a bargain hunter's dream. A network of unauthorized "gray market" importers and conversion shops emerged, bypassing factory channels and retrofitting cars to meet U.S. regulations and emission standards--at least in theory. These cars had to pass through U.S. customs, a system equipped to handle only a few independent imports annually. As applications ballooned, the regulatory system collapsed. This is the story of a misunderstood but fascinating period in the automotive industry, when creative importers found ways to put American motorists in new Ferraris while the EPA and DOT were backed up with mounds of paperwork.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Herman Melville's reputation as a great writer has gradually evolved throughout the 20th century. Tempered by studies that emphasize the Western literary tradition, literary appreciation for Melville's use of folklore has been slow in developing. This study focuses on Melville's immersion with and borrowing from oral traditions: both music and narrative; tall-tale humour; nautical folklore; superstition; and legend. The book also acts as a general introduction to Melville's work.
