Book Synopsis Monitoring, Simulation, Prevention and Remediation of Dense and Debris Flows III by : D. De Wrachien
Download or read book Monitoring, Simulation, Prevention and Remediation of Dense and Debris Flows III written by D. De Wrachien and published by WIT Press. This book was released on 2010 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Debris and hyper-concentrated flows are among the most destructive of all water related disasters. They affect both rural and urban areas in a wide range of morphoclimatic environments, and in recent years have attracted more and more attention from the scientific and professional communities and concern from the public due to the death toll they claim. The increased frequency of these natural hazards, coupled with climatic change predictions and urban development, suggests that they are set to worsen in the future. This book contains the edited versions of the papers presented at the third International conference on Monitoring, Simulation, Prevention and Remediation of Dense and Debris Flows. The Conference brought together engineers, scientists and managers from across the globe to discuss the latest scientific advancs in the field of dense and hyper-concentrated flows, as well as to improve models, assess risk, develop hazard maps based on model results and to design prevention and mitigation measures. The papers have been organised into the following sections: Debris Flow Modelling; Debris Flow Triggering; Risk Assessment and Hazard Mitigation; Sediment Transport and Debris Flow Monitoring & Analysis.

Download or read book Richard Attenborough written by Sally Dux and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2016-05-16 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Richard Attenborough’s film career has stretched across seven decades; surprisingly, Sally Dux’s book is the first detailed scholarly analysis of his work as a filmmaker. Concentrating on his work behind the camera, she explores his initial role as a producer, including his partnerships with Bryan Forbes in Beaver Films (1959–64) and with Allied Film Makers (1960–64). As we know, Attenborough went on to direct twelve films, many of which achieved great acclaim, most notably Gandhi, which won eight Academy Awards in 1982 Attenborough is most renowned for his biographical films including Young Winston, Cry Freedom, Chaplin and Shadowlands, which helped to establish the genre within British cinema. Although his work has often attracted controversy, particularly regarding the representation of individuals and historical events, his films are noted for extracting acclaimed performances from unknown actors such as Ben Kingsley (Gandhi), while maintaining his moral and thematic concerns.
Book Synopsis From SWEETBACK to SUPER FLY by : Gerald R. Butters
Download or read book From SWEETBACK to SUPER FLY written by Gerald R. Butters and published by University of Missouri Press. This book was released on 2016-01-31 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Racial politics and capitalism found a way to blend together in 1970s Chicago in the form of movie theaters targeted specifically toward African Americans. In From Sweetback to Super Fly, Gerald Buttersexamines the movie theaters in Chicago’s Loop that became, as he describes them, “black spaces” during the early 1970s with theater managers making an effort to gear their showings toward the African American community by using black-themed and blaxploitation films. Butters covers the wide range of issues that influenced the theaters, from changing racial patterns to the increasingly decrepit state of Chicago’s inner city and the pressure on businesses and politicians alike to breathe life into the dying area. Through his extensive research, Butters provides an in-depth look at this phenomenon, delving into an area that has not previously been explored. His close examination of how black-themed films were marketed and how theaters showing these films tried to draw in crowds sheds light on race issues both from an industrial standpoint on the side of the theaters and movie producers, as well as from a cultural standpoint on the side of the moviegoers and the city of Chicago as a whole. Butters provides a wealth of information on a very interesting yet underexamined part of history, making From Sweetback to Super Fly a supremely enjoyable and informative book.

Book Synopsis British Business in Post-Colonial Malaysia, 1957-70 by : Nicholas J. White
Download or read book British Business in Post-Colonial Malaysia, 1957-70 written by Nicholas J. White and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2004-08-02 with total page 523 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the limits of the idea of 'neo-colonialism' - the idea that in the period immediately after independence Malaya/Malaysia enjoyed only a 'pseudo-independence', largely because of the entrenched and dominant position of British business interests allied to indigenous elites. The author argues that, although British business did indeed have a strong position in Malaysia in this period, Malaysian politicians and administrators were able to utilise British business, which was relatively weak vis-a-vis the Malaysian state, for their own ends, at the same time as indigenous businesses and foreign, non-British competitors were gathering strength. In addition, despite the commitment of both Conservative and Labour governments in the UK to preserving British influence worldwide through the Commonwealth relationship, British firms in Malaysia received only limited support from the British post-imperial state.
Book Synopsis Legendary Trials by : Daniel J. Lanahan J.D.
Download or read book Legendary Trials written by Daniel J. Lanahan J.D. and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2019-03-30 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an effort to show that history really does repeat itself and highlight great issues of our times, this book captures the essence of certain trials that took place in the history of the United States and reminds us that many issues of old are still with us yet unresolved and subject to great continuing public interest. The author argues that public perceptions of guilt or innocence are often wrong and could have actually affected the results of famous trials. Celebrity murders, governmental manipulation, death penalty, and civil rights issues provide some of the backdrop for discussions. The guilt of famous accused ax murderess, Lizzi Borden, a white churchgoing maiden from New England is compared with the terrorists Sacco and Vanzetti. The murder of a child by other youths, Leopold and Loeb, creates a forum to discuss the death penalty as argued by famous trial lawyer Clarence Darrow. The death penalty as applied to minors was only recently decided by the US Supreme Court. The Civil Rights Movement, developed from the Scottsboro Boys trial and World War II, is analyzed. Military commissions and tribunals and the treatment of prisoners of war and enemy combatants are issues that arise out of the Nuremburg trial. Social and religious debates are dealt with in the Scopes Monkey trial. The right of choice developed in Roe vs. Wade, and the special college admission case of Bakke vs. the Regents of the University of California are all discussed. Finally, the impeachments and trials of Clinton and Johnson are compared. This review of the last one hundred years in the courts, wherein major issues, many still with us, is enlightening and thought provoking.

Book excerpt: " Whether called "the good people," "the little people," or simply "them," fairies are familiar from their appearances in Shakespeare's plays, Disney's films, and points in between. In many cultures, however, fairies are not just the stuff of distant legend or literature: they are real creatures with supernatural powers. The Good People presents nineteen essays that focus on the actual fairies of folklore -- fairies of past and living traditions who affected, and still affect, people's lives in myriad ways.
