Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is no shortage of African talent in European Football. In fact, a definitive list of the continent´s finest players in England´s top flight alone, for example, is extremely difficult to compile. Considering that talents such as Michael Essien, Didier Drogba, Kolo Toure, Benni McCarthy, El-Hadji Diouf and Yakubu are all regularly on display week-in, week-out, African football fans have a multitude of riches to admire. Notwithstanding, Africa’s main concern must be towards capturing the coveted FIFA World Cup. THE BIG QUESTION IS: If Africa were that good in football why are they not showing it at the FIFA World Cup? So far no African team (country) has gone beyond the FIFA World Cup quarter final. Ghana and Cameroon have shown class at one time and once made it to the 8th stage though. Senegal and Nigeria have also once made it past the first 16th stage. No doubt, Africa has the football talents; let’s pray and hope her officials live up to the challenge in shaping their national team’s spirit to tangible results. Just getting to the 16th stage is not good enough for the euphoria. Africa can do better than merely showing up. I predict a great showing in South Africa 2010, at least to 8th stage, (the semi-finals) and winning in Brazil in 2014. The question then is: Which African country is ready to meet this challenge? The truth of the matter is any of the African teams is capable. This book looks at the history of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and goes on to feature Africa’s great footballers Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Legends of the Buffalo Bills, first published in 2003, is not only a story about a National Football League team. It is also the story of the city it occupies and its fans. Original members of “The Foolish Club,” a group of owners who bought into the idea of forming the American Football League to go up against the mighty NFL in 1960, the Bills have had their fair share of losing seasons, but they’ve also been winners. During the team’s ten years in the now defunct AFL, Buffalo captured three Eastern Division titles, along with two AFL championships. Meanwhile the team strung together an unprecedented four straight Super Bowl appearances from 1990–93. There have been many memorable moments and characters along the way as well who are documented in this book. Legendary running back Cookie Gilchrist and quarterback Jack Kemp led the Bills to their first glory years, including back-to-back AFL titles in 1964-65. And who could forget O.J. Simpson, who set a new individual rushing title with 2,003 yards in 1973? Or the Bills’ victory over the Dolphins on September 7, 1980 that ended the team’s twenty-game losing streak to Miami? Skyhorse Publishing, as well as our Sports Publishing imprint, are proud to publish a broad range of books for readers interested in sports—books about baseball, pro football, college football, pro and college basketball, hockey, or soccer, we have a book about your sport or your team. Book excerpt: Making exhibitions is a collaborative art, producing is a multi-layered unity of ideas and objects, of invention and manifestation, of content and form. However, there is an antagonistic dimension to it, because content and form are traditionally represented by the entirely different realms of curator and designer. Future successful developments in exhibition-making are dependent on whether this gap of antagonism can be bridged. space.time.narrative calls for a paradigmatic shift of focus. It puts forward a unique approach, breaking down traditional barriers and offering a wide-ranging theoretical context, redefining and expanding the parameters and the dynamics of the exhibition-format in terms of an open, narrative environment, which at its roots displays deep similarities with performance on stage, or installation in urban and rural space. The book breaks new ground by looking at the exhibition as a cultural format firstly within a great sweep of the arts in general, weaving a web of philosophical, museological, linguistic and media-theoretical references, which expands the contextual field of the profession. It then offers unique and important insights from within, in extreme close-up, by bringing together interviews with six of the leading exhibition designers who discuss the dynamics of the medium, its interactive dimensions, the soft parameters of the exhibition, and how to get to grips with the format as a complex narrative space, in which the public takes part. Curator and designer should reposition themselves professionally at the heart of the axis, which divides (or connects) content and form.

Book excerpt: "If you enjoy these too-good-to-be-true tales, Brunvand's new book will give you hours of pleasure."—Chicago Tribune A fabulously entertaining book from the ultimate authority on those almost believable tales that always happen to a "friend of a friend." Alligators in the sewers? A pet in the microwave? A tragic misunderstanding of the function of cruise control? No, it didn't really happen to your friend's sister's neighbor: it's an urban legend. And no matter how savvy you think you are, you are sure to find in this collection of over 200 tales at least one story you would have sworn was true. Jan Harold Brunvand has been collecting and studying this modern folklore for over twenty years. In Too Good to Be True he captures the best stories in their best retellings, along with their latest variations and examples of how the stories have changed as they move from person to person and place to place. To help you find your favorite, Brunvand has arranged the tales thematically. "Bringing Up Baby" is full of episodes of child-rearing gone wrong, including the grisly tale of the drugged out baby-sitter who mistakes the kid for a turkey. "Funny Business" showcases stories of infamous lapses in customer service, such as the story of the shockingly expensive chocolate chip cookie recipe. And "The Criminal Mind" features both brilliant --if they were real --scams, as well as the purported antics of the less mentally gifted. Whether you want to become an expert debunker or just have plenty of laughs, this book will surprise and entertain you. Illustrated throughout. "Informative and entertaining.... Brunvand has collected more than 200 of the most-repeated and best-known examples of modern folk-myth."—Tampa Tribune "[N]ot only an entertaining anthology, but an excellent introduction to the study of folklore itself."—Publishers Weekly "A fun read... . All the classics are here from the killer upstairs to the Kentucky Fried Rat."—New City "Resonant stories that express our hidden anxieties ... make us laugh, [or] arouse our fascinated horror."—San Francisco Chronicle Book Review "Informative and entertaining... . Brunvand has collected more than 200 of the most-repeated and best-known examples of modern folk-myth."—Tampa Tribune "[N]ot only an entertaining anthology, but an excellent introduction to the study of folklore itself."—Publishers Weekly
