Book Synopsis Athenagoras and the Divine Logos by : Józef Korneliusz Trzebuniak Svd
Download or read book Athenagoras and the Divine Logos written by Józef Korneliusz Trzebuniak Svd and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2020-09 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the apologies Request for Christians and Treatise on the Resurrection, Athenagoras draws abundantly both from the thoughts of the Greek philosophers-Plato, Aristotle, the Stoics-as well as from the reflections of Philo of Alexandria, John the Evangelist and Paul the Apostle. God creates, orders and maintains everything through his Logos. The Logos of God is described as the Platonic idea (ἰδέα) by which people are formed, and also the Aristotelian energy (ἐνεργεία), namely, the working power that creates humanity for eternal participation in God's happiness. The Athenian Philosopher confirms that the Logos manifests his presence in the world through spiritual beings. Ultimately, the main task of all human beings is to partake in the order given by the divine Logos.

Book Synopsis Athenagorae qui fertur: De resurrectione mortuorum by : M. Marcovich
Download or read book Athenagorae qui fertur: De resurrectione mortuorum written by M. Marcovich and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-12-22 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph comprises a new critical edition of Ps.-Athenagoras De Resurrectione Mortuorum, a complete edition of Arethas’ Scholia on the treatise, and (in the Appendix) a critical edition of the extant fragments of De Resurrectione attributed to Justin Martyr. Athenagoras was a Christian apologist, who flourished in the second half of the second century CE (ca. 180). Traditionally two extant Greek works have been attributed to him: a Plea on Behalf of the Christians, probably addressed to the Roman emperors Marcus Aurelius and Commodus, and the On the Resurrection of the Dead. The attribution of the latter treatise to Athenagoras has been a matter of dispute. In his Introduction, the editor sides with those scholars denying Athenagoras’ authorship, but ascribes its date to the end of the second century. This important edition by one of the most esteemed scholars in the field complements Prof. Marcovich’s edition of Athenagoras Legatio pro Christianis (Berlin, 1989).

The Lacedæmonian venerates Agamemnon as Zeus, and Phylonoë the daughter of Tyndarus; and the man of Tenedos worships Tennes. Aeterna Press
Book Synopsis Greek Myth and Religion by : Albert Henrichs
Download or read book Greek Myth and Religion written by Albert Henrichs and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2019-08-05 with total page 632 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the collected papers of Albert Henrichs on numerous subjects in ancient Greek myth and religion. What was ancient Greek religion really like? What is the reality of belief and action that lies behind the unwieldy sources, which stem from vast areas and epochs of the ancient world? What is the meaning, intended and otherwise, of religious action and speech in ancient Greece? Who were the Greek gods, how were they worshipped, and how were they viewed by those who worshipped them? One of the leading students of ancient Greek religion over the past five decades, Albert Henrichs, the Eliot Professor of Greek Literature at Harvard University, combines wide and deep learning, a pragmatic, incisive approach to the sources, and an apt use of comparative perspectives. Henrichs breaks new ground in discussing sacrifice, libation, cultic identity, religious action and speech, epiphany, and the personalities of the gods. Special attention is devoted to ancient Greek sources on the ancient Persian prophet Mani, founder of Manichaeism. As a group, Albert Henrichs’ papers on Greek religion offer a basic education on Greek myth and religion and constitute a blueprint for serious study of the subject.
