Download or read book Electronic Legal Deposit written by Paul Gooding and published by Facet Publishing. This book was released on 2020-10-02 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Legal deposit libraries, the national and academic institutions who systematically preserve our written cultural record, have recently been mandated with expanding their collection practices to include digitised and born-digital materials. The regulations that govern electronic legal deposit often also prescribe how these materials can be accessed. Although a growing international activity, there has been little consideration of the impact of e-legal deposit on the 21st Century library, or on its present or future users. This edited collection is a timely opportunity to bring together international authorities who are placed to explore the social, institutional and user impacts of e-legal deposit. It uniquely provides a thorough overview of this worldwide issue at an important juncture in the history of library collections in our changing information landscape, drawing on evidence gathered from real-world case studies produced in collaboration with leading libraries, researchers and practitioners (Biblioteca Nacional de México, Bodleian Libraries, British Library, National Archives of Zimbabwe, National Library of Scotland, National Library of Sweden). Chapters consider the viewpoint of a variety of stakeholders, including library users, researchers, and publishers, and provide overviews of the complex digital preservation and access issues that surround e-legal deposit materials, such as web archives and interactive media. The book will be essential reading for practitioners and researchers in national and research libraries, those developing digital library infrastructures, and potential users of these collections, but also those interested in the long-term implications of how our digital collections are conceived, regulated and used. Electronic legal deposit is shaping our digital library collections, but also their future use, and this volume provides a rigorous account of its implementation and impact.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Access to works in the public domain is an important source of human creativity and autonomy, whether in the arts, scientific research or online discourse. But what can users actually do with works without obtaining the permission of a copyright owner? Readers will be surprised to find how many different kinds of permitted usage exist around the world. This book offers a comprehensive international and comparative account of the copyright public domain. It identifies fifteen categories of public rights and gives a detailed legal explanation of each, showing how their implementation differs between jurisdictions. Through this analysis, the authors aim to restore balance to copyright policy debates, and to contribute to such debates by making practical law reform proposals. A major intervention in the field of intellectual property law and copyright, this book will appeal to lawyers, scholars and those involved in the administration of copyright law.

Download or read book The International Guide to Legal Deposit written by Jan T. Jasion and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-05-23 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1991, this volume aims to take a close look at the laws of 27 countries to locate what others value in the realm of legal deposit and heighten our awareness of its importance for free access to information. It responds to the great concern over the freedom of the press, the end of censorship and absolute government secrecy, and guaranteed public access to information. The term ‘legal deposit’, known in the UK and several former-British Empire countries as ‘copyright deposit’, originated in France in 1537 and has spread throughout the world, though the definition of the term remains questionable. Jan T. Jasion examines this through three parts: various aspects of legal deposit, comparing legal deposit worldwide and a detailed examination of the laws of 27 countries to compare the various national interpretations of legal deposit.

This book was released on 2011-10 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Constant access to legal deposit materials will depend on proper preservation methods from the time they are first produced. The focus was to identify how the different materials are preserved and stored, especially because every institution has unique needs, especially with regard to the climatic conditions of the area. The study also examined challenges faced by the depository, skills and knowledge of the depository staff about preventative preservation methods, resources for conservation and collection management strategies. The methods to help make materials accessible were established by examining the means and processes used. The results of the study show that there are inadequate preservation activities and strategies for legal deposit materials at the Msunduzi Municipal Library. The legal deposit collection was at risk of being lost and inaccessible to present and future generations.
Book Synopsis Libraries and Archives by : Tomas Lidman

Book excerpt: Libraries and Archives analyses the facts and arguments behind an increasing debate as to what extent libraries and archives are fulfilling the same missions. Despite the fact that they have different legal statuses, legal frameworks, and the work-flow looks very different, some politicians and bureaucrats think that there is much to gain if the two institutions work closely together or even merge. To understand the present situation it is important to have an understanding of the role of libraries and archives and their shared history. Therefore the development up to the present day is analysed in the first chapters of the book. The book stimulates debate and brings forth valuable facts about the topic. The main focus is on national libraries and national and regional archives from an international point of view. Offers a simple but comprehensive background to explain key issues behind the current debate Provides librarians and archivists with arguments The author has more than 40 years experience on the national and international archive and library scene
