It was edited by the organizers of the summer school held in August 2011 in University of California, Berkeley, as part of a collaborative program between the University of Tokyo and UC Berkeley. Motivated by the particular relevance and importance of social-scientific approaches to various crucial aspects of nuclear technology, special emphasis was placed on integrating nuclear science and engineering with social science. The book consists of the lectures given in 2011 summer school and additional chapters that cover developments in the past three years since the accident. Download or read book All Rise written by Dikgang Moseneke and published by Pan Macmillan South africa. This book was released on 2021-08-02 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the young age of fifteen, Dikgang Moseneke was imprisoned for participating in anti-apartheid activities. During his ten years of incarceration, he completed his schooling by correspondence and earned two university degrees. Afterwards he studied law at the University of South Africa. After some years in general legal practice and at the Bar, and a brief segue into business, Moseneke was persuaded that he would best serve the country’s young democracy by taking judicial office. All Rise covers his years on the bench, with particular focus on his fifteen-year term as a judge at South Africa’s apex court, the Constitutional Court, including as the deputy chief justice. His insights into the Constitutional Court’s structures, the personalities peopling it, the values it embodies, the human dramas that shook it and the cases that were brought to it make for fascinating reading. From the Constitutional Court of Arthur Chaskalson to the Mogoeng Mogoeng era, Moseneke’s understated but astute commentary is a reflection on the country’s ongoing but not altogether comfortable journey to a better life for all.

Download or read book Yvain written by Chretien de Troyes and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 1987-09-10 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The twelfth-century French poet Chrétien de Troyes is a major figure in European literature. His courtly romances fathered the Arthurian tradition and influenced countless other poets in England as well as on the continent. Yet because of the difficulty of capturing his swift-moving style in translation, English-speaking audiences are largely unfamiliar with the pleasures of reading his poems. Now, for the first time, an experienced translator of medieval verse who is himself a poet provides a translation of Chrétien’s major poem, Yvain, in verse that fully and satisfyingly captures the movement, the sense, and the spirit of the Old French original. Yvain is a courtly romance with a moral tenor; it is ironic and sometimes bawdy; the poetry is crisp and vivid. In addition, the psychological and the socio-historical perceptions of the poem are of profound literary and historical importance, for it evokes the emotions and the values of a flourishing, vibrant medieval past.

His life is accompanied by catastrophes that he cannot disentangle. He loses his breadwinner-Uncle before completing primary school, hence dropping out. The woes of living with his extended maternal family also torment his childhood. As the wave of the liberation struggle in Southern Rhodesia (present day Zimbabwe) intensifies, he joins, mainly pushed by his desperate desire to hold an AK47, a toy he never had as a child. He narrowly escapes death at the famous ZIPRA training camp ambush in Zambia. When the liberation war came to a halt, another war of ethnic groups followed, famously known as Gukurahundi, later referred to as 'a moment of madness'. He has no choice but to flee the country as a fugitive, landing himself in the heart of Hillbrow in Johannesburg, a residential area where only the fittest survive. Living as an undocumented foreigner in the Apartheid South Africa is no cup of coffee. His life is further soured when his buried past reincarnates to haunt him. With the scarcity of employment in SA, he finds himself 'piece jobs', working for 'Baas'. Life castrates him again when he is fired by his Baas for an ironic reason. He begins living the day he stops looking for a job.
Book Synopsis Work-Life Balance: Essential or Ephemeral? by : Andreas Schwingshackl
Download or read book Work-Life Balance: Essential or Ephemeral? written by Andreas Schwingshackl and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2017-09-28 with total page 77 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Burn-out and suicide rates among physicians and scientists in academic medicine are at an all-time high and jeopardize the future of our entire profession. In the last 4 years alone, burn-out rates among physicians have increased by 25%. In a recent 2017 Medscape publication, burn-out rates in Critical Care physicians ranked in 9th place and Pediatricians ranked 13th among 27 subspecialties. Astonishingly, over 50% of the participants reported burn-out symptoms, with clear race and gender disparities. While men generally report higher burn-out rates than women, it is important to emphasize that response rates from women in these surveys were notoriously low and may not represent the complete picture. These numbers are even more dismal for tenured academic faculty at research-extensive universities. In this group, emotional exhaustion (i.e. high burn-out) is reported at 35% with a clear association with age and lower burn-out levels in the older tenured faculty. While no gender or racial/ethnic differences were found in this particular group, higher levels of burn-out were identified in individuals with financial responsibilities beyond a spouse and child. While it is comforting to note the increasing public interest and research activities in this field, successful approaches to ameliorate the burden and consequences of physician burn-out are still inadequately developed. Academic centers increasingly offer some type of work-life balance program to their employees but, unfortunately, these programs are frequently adopted from corporate business models and remain largely ineffective in the academic environment. It should be evident to most administrators that the stressors of academic clinicians and scientists substantially differ from those of corporate employees. Based on these observations and over 75 years of combined experience in academic medicine amongst the three editors of this Research Topic, we collected 26 manuscripts from 22 authors at different career stages and different genders, ethnicities, marital status and subspecialties to identify and stratify common and specific stressors and therapeutic approaches to ameliorate burn-out and achieve work-life balance in academic medicine. We are confident that each reader will identify with at least one, if not several, of the authors’ opinions, experiences and approaches to attain greater work-life balance and thereby avoid the consequences of burn-out in modern academic medicine.
