Book excerpt: The challenges of teaching history are acute where we consider the world history classroom. Generalized world history courses are a part of many, if not most, K-12 curricular frameworks in the United States. While United States history tends to dominate the scholarship and conversation, there are an equally wide number of middle-level and secondary students and teachers engaged in the study of world history in our public schools. And the challenges are real. In the first place, if we are to mark content coverage as a curricular obstacle in the history classroom, generally, then we must underscore that concern in the world history classroom and for obvious reasons. The curricular terrain to choose from is immense and forever expanding, dealing with the development of numerous civilizations over millennia and across a wide geographic expanse. In addition to curricular concerns, world historical topics are inherently farther away from most students’ lives, not just temporally, but often geographically and culturally. Thus the rationale for the present text, Hollywood or History? An Inquiry-Based Strategy for Using Film to Teach World History. The reviews of the first volume Hollywood or History? An Inquiry-Based Strategy for Using Film to Teach Untied States History strategy have been overwhelmingly positive, especially as it pertains to the application of the strategy for practitioner. Classroom utility and teacher practice have remained our primary objectives in developing the Hollywood or History? strategy and we are encouraged by the possibilities of Volume II and the capacity of this most recent text to impact teaching and learning in world history. We believe that students’ connection to film, along with teachers’ ability to use film in an effective manner, will help alleviate some of the challenges of teaching world history. The book provides 30 secondary lesson plans (grades 6-12) that address nine eras in world history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In December 2018, the United States Senate unanimously passed the nation’s first antilynching act, the Justice for Victims of Lynching Act. For the first time in US history, legislators, representing the American people, classified lynching as a federal hate crime. While lynching histories and memories have received attention among communication scholars and some interdisciplinary studies of traditional civil rights memorials exist, contemporary studies often fail to examine the politicized nature of the spaces. This volume represents the first investigation of the National Memorial for Peace and Justice and the Legacy Museum, both of which strategically make clear the various links between America’s history of racial terror and contemporary mass incarceration conditions, the mistreatment of juveniles, and capital punishment. Racial Terrorism: A Rhetorical Investigation of Lynching focuses on several key social agents and organizations that played vital roles in the public and legal consciousness raising that finally led to the passage of the act. Marouf A. Hasian Jr. and Nicholas S. Paliewicz argue that the advocacy of attorney Bryan Stevenson, the work of the Equal Justice Initiative (EJI), and the efforts of curators at Montgomery’s new Legacy Museum all contributed to the formation of a rhetorical culture that set the stage at last for this hallmark lynching legislation. The authors examine how the EJI uses spaces of remembrance to confront audiences with race-conscious messages and measure to what extent those messages are successful.

Book excerpt: In this collection, world-renowned scholars of Bolshevism and world communism analyze the human costs of the Bolshevik Revolution, its contribution to the spread of totalitarianism, and the responses it inspired among American and Western intellectuals. Together, their essays constitute a profound refusal of the poesy of totalitarianism that is based on sober research and detailed analysis of the limits of utopian politics and the dangers of cruel ideologies based in the cosmetic aesthetic of moral perfectionism and lyric intoxication. This study provides an accurate and succinct depiction of the nature of Bolshevism and its consequences in light of several decades of research, including former Soviet archival materials and American intelligence such as the Venona files.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Biden administration may go down in history as the most disastrous presidency in American history. It did not, however, spring up out of nothing. The Biden era's America-Last, economically and socially destructive policies virtually all originated in the Obama administration. The Biden team, of course, is made up of numerous Obama holdovers, and there is widespread suspicion that the man who is really pulling the strings for Biden is none other than Barack Obama himself. Barack Obama's True Legacy details just how bad the Obama years really were for America and Americans, and shows how the country is now suffering from a resurgence of these sinister policies after the four-year respite of the Trump administration. The book is a collection of new, original non-published essays written by an organized group of prominent, conservative intellectuals on how Obama transformed America, documenting the suppressed details of how the ex-president was—and still is—a major national security threat to America. Barack Obama's True Legacy is a one-volume guide to how the Democrat Party went so drastically wrong, and why it is such a dangerous and catastrophic force in the White House and the country at large today. It all goes back to one man: Barack Hussein Obama.

Are White Christians under a spiritual mandate to make racial equity a priority? Clifford Williams taught philosophy at Christian colleges for many years, including a course on race. He has journeyed alongside students as they gained insights about racism. In this book, he draws from deeply personal stories as he shows the need for White Christians to recognize the impact of racism and to cultivate key character traits which enable them to pursue racial equity. In succinct and thoughtful prose, interwoven with first-person accounts of racialized experiences by people of color, Williams describes the importance of the Golden Rule, the power and effects of racial socialization, and the harm racism does to those who harbor it. He asks the haunting question, “Why do White people react so strongly to Black power?” He explains why widespread church integration in the United States may never exist. He unpacks the concept of White identity and links police brutality to faulty moral perception. This book gently explains what White Christians need to do to make racial equity a priority.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While 9/11 was understood at the time as a world-changing event in international relations, its uneven aftermath and the long-term effects for North America could not have been predicted. Twenty years later, The Legacy of 9/11 explores the political, economic, security and defence, and trade and border implications of the event. Written by a team of North American experts across many fields, the book foregrounds the fallout of 9/11 in Mexico and Canada as opposed to the more commonly discussed impact on the United States. Looking at the event and its aftermath through four lenses – ideas about North America; border, trade, and economics; security and society; and defence – contributors analyze the complex legacy of 9/11. Rather than serving as a catalyst to create an integrated, trilateral continent, 9/11 entrenched the North America we have today: three separate states with emphasis on two very different borders. From a reconsideration of internationalism, a rise in populism, and a shift in migration patterns to the interventions in Afghanistan and Iraq, The Legacy of 9/11 uncovers how successive North American governments reacted in surprising ways to the world-altering attack.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2019, of the 252 Republican members of Congress, only 3 were African American. Lincoln’s progressive Republicanism had been supplanted by the regressive 1950s Southern-styled Democratic Party ideology of white primacy. America’s initial morally flawed constitution permitted slavery to persist, catalyzing and sustaining hostile unresolvable ideological warfare, driven by slavery issues, the Civil War, a failed post-war Reconstruction effort, and a brutal Jim Crow suppression. And since the 1980s, politically contrived Republican race-neutral legislation and policies have disproportionally targeted minorities, resulting in discriminatory housing, voting, policing, and criminal justice outcomes. Over the centuries, excessive white self-serving social and economic individualism of privilege, religious ethno-cultural racism, and a destructive anti-progressive, anti-intellectual, and anti-scientific mentality has been ingrained within the nation’s DNA. This is America’s continuum of racial democracy and injustice.
