Book Synopsis Lectures On Cosmology And Action-at-a-distance Electrodynamics by : Fred Hoyle
Download or read book Lectures On Cosmology And Action-at-a-distance Electrodynamics written by Fred Hoyle and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1996-07-03 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the subject of electrodynamics at classical as well as quantum level, developed as an interaction at a distance. Thus it has electric charges interacting with one another directly and not through the medium of a field. In general such an interaction travels forward and backward in time symmetrically, thus apparently violating the principle of causality. It turns out, however, that in such a description the cosmological boundary conditions become very important. The theory therefore works only in a cosmology with the right boundary conditions; but when it does work it is free from the divergences that plague a quantum field theory.
Book Synopsis Lecture Notes on Motivic Cohomology by : Carlo Mazza
Download or read book Lecture Notes on Motivic Cohomology written by Carlo Mazza and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2006 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The notion of a motive is an elusive one, like its namesake "the motif" of Cezanne's impressionist method of painting. Its existence was first suggested by Grothendieck in 1964 as the underlying structure behind the myriad cohomology theories in Algebraic Geometry. We now know that there is a triangulated theory of motives, discovered by Vladimir Voevodsky, which suffices for the development of a satisfactory Motivic Cohomology theory. However, the existence of motives themselves remains conjectural. This book provides an account of the triangulated theory of motives. Its purpose is to introduce Motivic Cohomology, to develop its main properties, and finally to relate it to other known invariants of algebraic varieties and rings such as Milnor K-theory, etale cohomology, and Chow groups. The book is divided into lectures, grouped in six parts. The first part presents the definition of Motivic Cohomology, based upon the notion of presheaves with transfers. Some elementary comparison theorems are given in this part. The theory of (etale, Nisnevich, and Zariski) sheaves with transfers is developed in parts two, three, and six, respectively. The theoretical core of the book is the fourth part, presenting the triangulated category of motives. Finally, the comparison with higher Chow groups is developed in part five. The lecture notes format is designed for the book to be read by an advanced graduate student or an expert in a related field. The lectures roughly correspond to one-hour lectures given by Voevodsky during the course he gave at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton on this subject in 1999-2000. In addition, many of the original proofs have been simplified and improved so that this book will also be a useful tool for research mathematicians. Book Synopsis Lectures on Random Lozenge Tilings by : Vadim Gorin
Download or read book Lectures on Random Lozenge Tilings written by Vadim Gorin and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2021-09-09 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past 25 years, there has been an explosion of interest in the area of random tilings. The first book devoted to the topic, this timely text describes the mathematical theory of tilings. It starts from the most basic questions (which planar domains are tileable?), before discussing advanced topics about the local structure of very large random tessellations. The author explains each feature of random tilings of large domains, discussing several different points of view and leading on to open problems in the field. The book is based on upper-division courses taught to a variety of students but it also serves as a self-contained introduction to the subject. Test your understanding with the exercises provided and discover connections to a wide variety of research areas in mathematics, theoretical physics, and computer science, such as conformal invariance, determinantal point processes, Gibbs measures, high-dimensional random sampling, symmetric functions, and variational problems.

Book Synopsis Lecture Notes On Computational Structural Biology by : Zhijun Wu
Download or read book Lecture Notes On Computational Structural Biology written by Zhijun Wu and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2008-06-11 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the field of computational structural biology or structural bioinformatics is rapidly developing, there are few books with a relatively complete coverage of such diverse research subjects studied in the field as X-ray crystallography computing, NMR structure determination, potential energy minimization, dynamics simulation, and knowledge-based modeling. This book helps fill the gap by providing such a survey on all the related subjects. Comprising a collection of lecture notes for a computational structural biology course for the Program on Bioinformatics and Computational Biology at Iowa State University, the book is in essence a comprehensive summary of computational structural biology based on the author's own extensive research experience, and a review of the subject from the perspective of a computer scientist or applied mathematician. Readers will gain a deeper appreciation of the biological importance and mathematical novelty of the research in the field.
