It dates from 1844, and originally contained only the first seven Lectures. The Lectures were delivered on successive Sunday nights; the church was crowded during the series, - a thing that sel dom happened during my Western life. Indianapolis in 1844 contained about four thousand inhabitants, * and had not less than twelve churches of eight different denominations. The audiences of the Second Presbyterian Church, of which I was pastor, did not average five hundred in number during the eight years of my settlement. But five hundred was regarded as a large audience. The Lectures were written, each one during the week preced ing the day of its delivery. I well remember the enjoyment which I had in their preparation. They were children of early enthusiasm. I can see before me now, as plainly as then, the room which in our little ten-foot home served at once as parlor, study, and bedroom; and the writing-chair, the place by the window, and the skeleton bookcase, with a few books scattered on solitary shelves, like a handful of people in church on a rainy day. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures, Vol. 2: Delivered Before the Young Men's Christian Association; 1846-47 The following remarks upon British India shall have reference to its extent, its history, its people, and its religion. "When the nations of "Western Asia, in travelling towards the East, passed from those elevated regions of land forming what we now call Hindostan and Afghanistan, they found those ranges sloping down to a majestic river far surpassing the Oxus, the Tigris, or the Euphrates, with which they were familiar, to a river of the name of the Indus, - and to the tract of land lying to the east of that river they gave the name of India. The region in which we find them extending themselves may be thus described. Stretching from the Indus on the west, you find the gigantic range of the Himalaya Mountains running along towards the east, and you travel in that direction 1800 miles before you reach the eastern limits of British India, in the province of Assam. If you take the northern extremity, the Yale of Cashmere, you travel 2000 miles before you reach the southern termination, Cape Comorin: the most northern city is Lahore, and the most southern city is Trichinopoly. These two cities are as far apart as Stockholm and Naples. Upon the other hand, Chittagong on the east, and Hydrabad on the west, are as far apart as Athens and Paris. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Formation of a Manly Character: A Series of Lectures to Young Men The aim of the following lectures is expressed in a brief charge delivered by David to his son Solomon, Show thyself a man. There is true dignity in manhood. To be a man in the high sense intended in this brief but significant sentence, is to attain to the highest excellence. True manhood is little less than an gelic - it is the grandest exhibition of the divine power and wisdom - the culminating point of this world' s greatness. Man was not only made in the likeness and image of God, ' but, as says Dr. South, in him were united all the scattered perfections of the creature, all the graces and ornaments; all the airs and features of being were abridged into this small, yet full, system of nature and divinity. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Young Men of the Bible: Considered in a Series of Lectures, Before the Young Men's Christian Association In the fall of the year 1851, a correspondent of a religious paper of this city, wrote an account of a visit to the Rooms of the London Young Men's Christian Association, which was published; and a friend, who has recently gone to his reward, saw it and spoke of it to others. At that time, Christians were powerfully impressed with the importance of making an effort to save the young men of our city from the evil by which they were surrounded, and were therefore pleased to hear of the movement in London. A similar effort was at once made, which resulted in the formation of the Boston Young Men's Christian Association, the first institution of the kind, which was formed in the United States. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Three Great Temptations of Young Men: With Several Lectures Addressed to Business and Professional Men Tms volume contains the substance of a series of discourses principally addressed to young men, and delivered during the last winter in the Second Presbyterian Church in this city, of which the author is pastor. They are printed for the same reason that they were originally composed and delivered - to promote the temporal and eternal well being of the multitudes of young men who gather into these great centers of business. The desire for their publication has been so general among those who heard them, and expressed in so substantial a manner, that the author has not felt at liberty to withhold them. He has long been convinced, that these popular vices, perhaps because they are so manifestly evil and ruinous, have not received that atten tion from the pulpit and the press which their fearful prevalence in our large cities imperatively demands. By the pulpit, they have been regarded as so unmistakably wicked so broadly offensive to religion, as to need only an occasional allusion, an indirect discussion; by the press at large, they have too generally been regarded either as a necessary evil, or as fine subjects for editorial witticisms. Meanwhile hundreds and thou sands are yearly entering upon this broad pathway to perdition. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Their presentation in the present form is owing to the repeated solicitation of ministers and others who heard them, and a desire that they may secure a wider field of influence than was at first contemplated. I entertained no thought of publishing them until one-half of them had been delivered, and even now, if my own fame were the highest consideration, I should not suffer them to see the light. They are not without many defects, and no one can be so conscious of these as the author himself; but no time has been allowed me for that finish and clearness of statement which would com mend them to the cultivated. More than the half of them appear precisely as they were first written and delivered. Though commenced in, and continued through midsummer, they had a large hearing, and were not without gratifying results at the time. I have thought that in this time, when so many influ ences are at work Which are designed to Vitiate the lives of young men especially, a book with an aim so specific might be regarded as timely.
