Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on the Philosophy of the Mind, Vol. 3 This gratification they would yield to us, even if we were to regard them only in the past, as objects of a science purely Speculative. But, when we consider the relations of events, in their aptitudes to precede and follow, as equally diffused over the time that is to come, as presenting to us, everywhere in the past or present sequences observed by us, the source of some future good or future evil; of good which we can obtain, and of evil which we can avoid, merely by knowing the order in which these past sequences have occurred; the knowledge of these invariable relations of succes sion becomes to us inestimable, not as a medium only of intellectual luxury, but as the medium of all the arts of life, and even of the continuance of our very physical existence, which is preserved only by an nu ceasing adaptation of our actions to the fitnesses or tendencies of external things. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on the Philosophy of the Human Mind, Vol. 1 of 3 The subject on which we are about to enter, and which is to engage, I trust, a considerable portion of your attention for many months, is the Philosophy of the Human Mind, - not that speculative and passive philosophy only, which inquires into the nature of our intellectual part, and the mysterious connexion of this with the body which it animates, but that practical science, which relates to the duties, and the hopes, and the great destiny of man, and which, even in analyzing the powers of his understanding, and tracing all the various modifications of which it is individually susceptible, views it chiefly as a general instrument of good - an instrument by which he may have the dignity of co-operating with his beneficent Creator, by spreading to others the knowledge, and virtue, and happiness, which he is qualified at once to enjoy, and to diffuse. "Philosophy," says Seneca, "is not formed for artificial show or delight. It has a higher office than to free idleness of its languor, and wear away and amuse the long hours of a day. It is that which forms and fashions the soul, which gives to life its disposition and order, which points out what it is our duty to do, what it is our duty to omit. It sits at the helm, and in a sea of peril, directs the course of those who are wandering through the waves." Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mind, Vol. 3: A Quarterly Review of Psychology and Philosophy Impartial readers of recent English discussions of the space-question will be ready to admit that there is still ample room for more than one theory of the subject. Some years ago it was commonly thought that, thanks to the arguments of the Berkeleyans aided by the experiments of Wheatstone and others the derivative nature of visual space was amply demonstrated. Yet the skilful rehabilitation of the opposite doctrine by Bailey proved, as J. S. Mill allowed, how great the difficulties are which still beset the problem. More recently the ingenious arguments of what may perhaps be called the Dublin school, including Messrs. Abbot, Monck, and Mahaffy, have shown that the theory of visual space is even now far from being finally determined. In Germany the same unsettled condition of the problem meets us. Indeed the division of opinion is even more strongly marked in that country than in out own. English writers on the whole have followed the direction indicated by Berkeley, who may be said indeed to have given shape to the problem in our country. In Germany, on the other hand, the discussion of the question received its initial impulse from the opposite side, namely, from the peculiar intuitional doctrine of Kant. And this fact explains why the intuitive or original view has been so ably represented in German writings. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mind, Vol. 31: A Quarterly Review of Psychology and Philosophy In spite, however, of its difficulties, there is more need of such a task as has been set for me being undertaken in the case of Meinong's work than in the case of that of most philoso phers. For it is true to say that the different investigations upon which he was engaged, independent of one another though at first sight they appear to be, are not in fact unrelated, and that his various lines of refiexion have principles in common which it would certainly be worth while to drag to light. I can hardly h0pe to succeed in doing so; but I may perhaps contrive to furnish such an outline of Meinong's ways of thinking as may be serviceable to those who have not as yet made acquaintance with his writings. Of their importance no one who is familiar with them can be in doubt; they are important as profound in quiries into the most fundamental of philosophical questions they are important no less as illustrating the method by which philosophic truth is won. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mind, Vol. 10: A Quarterly Review of Psychology and Philosophy Sidgwick' 8 final retirement from the Council was partly connected with the last phase of the question of admitting women to degrees. He never wished to adopt the university system of education for women without modification, and objected in particular to compulsory Greek'. He supported the proposal to grant titular degrees to women, though he had at first thought it premature or imprudent. Opponents. Thought that it was a step which would necessarily lead to further changes; Sidgwick and his friends considered it as a compromlse for an indefinite time, though they could not pledge themselves to its absolute finality. The rejection by a great majority was a blow to the party of advance. Nobody could ever suspect Sidgwick of the slight est insincerity; but the measure advocated might seem equivocal, however good the motive: and a love of com promise, though prompted by simple desire for justice, may have an appearance of diplomacy. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mind, Vol. 8: A Quarterly Review of Psychology and Philosophy, 1899 Those who are engaged in the study of metaphysical philo Sophy Often find themselves criticised by those who are working at the special sciences on the ground that, while the special sciences are continually adding to the sum of human knowledge and to man's power over nature, meta physical philosophy makes no progress, but consists merely in a chaos of rival and contradictory speculations. And it is sometimes said that a clear proof Of the barrenness of the pursuit is to be found in the attention devoted to the philosophers of the past, and even of a very remote past. The student of chemistry or biology is referred to the latest text-books; the student of metaphysics is sent back to Locke and Kant, to Descartes and Spinoza, or even to Plato and Aristotle. Some great scientific workers have themselves been imbued with the taste or passion for philo sophy, and, like Huxley for instance, have been able to appreciate both the scientific and the philosophical work of Descartes or Aristotle. Some scientific men also recognise that in their own special departments a study of the history of scientific ideas is not an altogether irrelevant part of their work. Still it remains true, that the average scientific specialist feels convinced, or speaks as if he were convinced, of the futility of metaphysics, and regards the history of metaphysical variations and our occupation with it as a confirmation of his sceptical attitude. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mind, Vol. 12: A Quarterly Review of Psychology and Philosophy Now my first thesis is, that this element, discernible in each and every sensation, though more developed in some than in others, is the original sensation of space, out of which all the exact knowledge about space that we afterwards come to have is woven by processes of discrimination, association and selection. Extensiveness, on this view, becomes an element in each sensation just as intensity is. The latter everyone will admit to be a distinguishable though not separable ingredient of the sensible quality. In like manner extensiveness, being an entirely peculiar kind of feeling in describable except in terms of itself, and inseparable in actual experience from some sensational quality which it must accompany, can itself receive no other name than that of sensational element. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The overriding rationale behind this book is a desire to enrich the lives of college students by introducing them to the practice of philosophical thought in an accessible and engaging manner. The text has over one hundred classical and contemporary readings that facilitate studying each philosophical issue from a variety of perspectives, giving instructors the opportunity to choose a set of readings that matches the individual needs of each class. It includes many selections by philosophers whose works are often ignored or underrepresented in other introductory texts. The initial reading, "The Role of Philosophy," is a relevant, clear, and absorbing introduction to the discipline of philosophy. It uses everyday life situations to give students a solid foothold before they journey into specific philosophical topics. In addition, every section of the book has its own special introduction that connects each topic to students’ personal lives. The surrounding narrative is designed to be conversational and comprehensible. Special features include a section on the role of logic, and writing a philosophy paper, two useful tools for approaching and analyzing philosophical writing for students who are new to philosophy. The book is accompanied by a companion website (www.routledge.com/cw/Baronett), with many helpful features, including (for students) review questions for all readings in the book, videos, and 66 related entries taken from the student-friendly Routledge Encyclopedia of Philosophy and (for instructors) 2,500 questions and answers."
