Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on the Method of Science The Lectures published in the present volume form part of a course on Scientific Method, delivered at the request of the Delegates for the Extension of University Teaching during the Summer Meeting, at Oxford, in August, 1905. At previous meetings it had been the practice to offer, in the section of Natural Science, a course of lectures in some special branch of scientific study. When the arrangements for the meeting of 1905 were under discussion, a suggestion was made to the Delegates by Mr. A. W. Brown - formerly Exhibitioner of Christ Church, and now Principal of the University Extension College at Stafford - to the effect that a different plan should be pursued this year. Instead of a course upon some particular branch of scientific investigation, it was suggested that a course should be given illustrating the forms taken by scientific method in various departments of research. The suggestion was approved by the Delegates, and a scheme of Lectures was drawn up. The course as delivered in Oxford was received with great satisfaction, and it appeared to the Delegates that it might be of value to publish some of the Lectures in the hope that their high interest, both in themselves and in their mutual connexion, would justify their presentation to a wider public. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The work that helped to determine Paul Feyerabend's fame and notoriety, Against Method, stemmed from Imre Lakatos's challenge: "In 1970 Imre cornered me at a party. 'Paul,' he said, 'you have such strange ideas. Why don't you write them down? I shall write a reply, we publish the whole thing and I promise you—we shall have a lot of fun.' " Although Lakatos died before he could write his reply, For and Against Method reconstructs his original counter-arguments from lectures and correspondence previously unpublished in English, allowing us to enjoy the "fun" two of this century's most eminent philosophers had, matching their wits and ideas on the subject of the scientific method. For and Against Method opens with an imaginary dialogue between Lakatos and Feyerabend, which Matteo Motterlini has constructed, based on their published works, to synthesize their positions and arguments. Part one presents the transcripts of the last lectures on method that Lakatos delivered. Part two, Feyerabend's response, consists of a previously published essay on anarchism, which began the attack on Lakatos's position that Feyerabend later continued in Against Method. The third and longest section consists of the correspondence Lakatos and Feyerabend exchanged on method and many other issues and ideas, as well as the events of their daily lives, between 1968 and Lakatos's death in 1974. The delight Lakatos and Feyerabend took in philosophical debate, and the relish with which they sparred, come to life again in For and Against Method, making it essential and lively reading for anyone interested in these two fascinating and controversial thinkers and their immense contributions to philosophy of science. "The writings in this volume are of considerable intellectual importance, and will be of great interest to anyone concerned with the development of the philosophical views of Lakatos and Feyerabend, or indeed with the development of philosophy of science in general during this crucial period."—Donald Gillies, British Journal for the Philosophy of Science (on the Italian edition) "A stimulating exchange of letters between two philosophical entertainers."—Tariq Ali, The Independent Imre Lakatos (1922-1974) was professor of logic at the London School of Economics. He was the author of Proofs and Refutations and the two-volume Philosophical Papers. Paul Feyerabend (1924-1994) was educated in Europe and held numerous teaching posts throughout his career. Among his books are Against Method; Science in a Free Society; Farewell to Reason; and Killing Time: The Autobiography of Paul Feyerabend, the last published by the University of Chicago Press.

Book excerpt: The scientific method is just over a hundred years old. From debates about the evolution of the human mind to the rise of instrumental reasoning, Henry M. Cowles shows how the idea of a single "scientific method" emerged from a turn inward by psychologists that produced powerful epistemological and historical effects that are still with us today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Scientific Method: Its Function in Research and in Education Drawn from literature, class activities, and research work. I am indebted to my colleagues at Stanford Uni versity for their kindness in answering the questionnaire discussed in the second lecture. I have drawn freely from class reports of students for bibliographical data about men of science, and have especially profited by the reports of Mr. C. G. Shambaugh upon Charles Darwin and Francis Bacon. I am indebted to Dr. Lucia B. Mirrielees for suggesting the quotation which is introductory to this volume. I have been helped financially in the experimental work reported by two grants from the Stanford University Council of Research in the Social Sciences. Two of the lectures as here published are slightly extended from their form as given orally, but even so the reader is asked to be charitable in judging of the unity of this series. If the at tempt to incorporate philosophical, historical, and very re cent experimental material into a single structure has thrown any new light upon the immediate problems of re search, education, and eugenics, no apology for its brevity and incompleteness need be made. In light of concerns about American science literacy, scientists and educators have struggled to teach this discipline more effectively. Science Teaching Reconsidered provides undergraduate science educators with a path to understanding students, accommodating their individual differences, and helping them grasp the methodsâ€"and the wonderâ€"of science. What impact does teaching style have? How do I plan a course curriculum? How do I make lectures, classes, and laboratories more effective? How can I tell what students are thinking? Why don't they understand? This handbook provides productive approaches to these and other questions. Written by scientists who are also educators, the handbook offers suggestions for having a greater impact in the classroom and provides resources for further research.
