Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on the Experimental Psychology of the Thought-Processes In a course of lectures on the elementary psychology of Feeling and Attention, published last year, I remarked that "the system of psychology rests upon a threefold foundation: the doctrine of sensation and image, the elementary doctrine of feeling, and the doctrine of attention." This statement, which formed the basis of my whole discussion, was promptly challenged by reviewers. I was misled, they affirmed, by a sensationalistic bias; I should have taken account of current experimental work upon the thought-processes; I had no right to assume that all intellection is imaginal in character. I could not but acknowledge the essential justice of this criticism, although I could not either accept my critics' point of view. I was, indeed, engaged in writing a brief defence of psychological sensationalism, when I received an invitation to deliver a series of lectures at the University of Illinois. Here was an opportunity, of which I gladly availed myself, to treat in some little detail of the recent experimental contributions to the psychology of thought. The present volume is the result. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thinking, Feeling, Doing The greatest of psychologists, wundt, has written a series of lectures on psychology (lately translated into English), but the style and the matter are fully intelligible only to those who are already somewhat familiar with the science. No one else has produced a book explaining the methods and results of the new psychology. This is my reason for writing one. This is the first book on the new, or experimental, psychology written in the English language. That it has been written expressly for the people will, I hope, be taken as evidence of the attitude of the science in its desire to serve humanity. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Outline of Psychology My aim in writing this book has been to present in brief outline and simple form the methods and most important results of experimental psychology. The volume contains the substance of lectures delivered to second and third year classes in the Cornell University, and is designed primarily as a text-book for those who attend my lecture courses. I hope, however, that its sphere of usefulness may extend beyond these limits. The plan of work is analytic. It sets out from the consideration of the simplest factors in adult mental experience, and endeavours gradually to build up the actual mind from the laws of these simple factors and their groupings. After a general introduction comes a series of four chapters, which deal with the elementary conscious functions. A second series discusses those complex mental processes which are easiest of analysis and lend themselves best to individual treatment. A third series deals in part with still more complicated processes, while in part it pushes the analysis of previous chapters still further. A concluding section surveys the results of the whole enquiry, and indicates the point at which psychology gives place to metaphysics. Nearly all of the present day textbooks in psychology either omit entirely a study of the thinking process, or treat it very inadequately, on the ground that logic is a separate science. Whether it is a separate science or not, a knowledge of logical processes is an essential element in the preparation of a teacher; and since few normal schools offer a separate course in logic, Whatever knowledge of logical processes is acquired must be obtained from the course in psychology. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Experimental Study of Silent Thinking In order to understand thinking from a point of view other than logical, it is necessary that thought processes be submitted to experimentation and be carefully observed in respect to their inherent characteristics. The results described below have been based upon an experimental study of thinking in relation to its physiological and psychological aspects. Not only has thinking in this investigation been submitted to observation under controlled conditions, but objective measures have also been made of its various characteristics, so that as little dependence as possible has been placed upon the subjective estimates of those thought processes which were being studied. The term "silent thinking" has been used throughout this report to describe the processes carried on by the mind in its attempt to reach new conclusions, which are controlled in their development by the demands of a problematic situation. Subjects have been asked to solve problems without consciously making use of any explicit form of behavior. The value of the solution was not taken into account. Any solution offered by the subject, which to him was new, was accepted. It is such processes as these that have been submitted to experimentation in this investigation and that have been studied from the psychological and physiological view points. There have been few attempts to deliberately observe under controlled conditions the silent reaching of new conclusions. Ach, in his study of thought, was interested to discover whether extra-conscious determining tendencies, set up by a given task, could yield new products which would not be the result of reproduction. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Train of Thought: An Experimental Study of the Insane In observing and studying experimentally the patients at Friends' Asylum for the Insane, Frankford, one test has proved especially fruitful of results. The test is that used by Prof. Lightner Witmer for the study of association. The subject is required to write a list of words, one below the other, during a period of fifteen minutes. He is directed to write without pause or choice each word as it occurs to him. The experimenter records the number of words written during the first two minutes, and during the first, second and third periods of five minutes each. This fifteen minute test furnishes material for the study of (1) the forms of association, (2) the quality of the ideas expressed (perceptual or conceptual), (3) the thought content, (4) the rapidity of thought, (5) the effect of practice and fatigue, (6) the degree of concentration of thought, and (7) the degree of the power of application. The trend of thought is not controlled in any way by the experimenter, and the subject writing freely for a period of fifteen minutes, rarely fails to include many words indicative of his individual interests and pursuits. In an insane subject this tendency is of especial value as delusions are often expressed which would not be betrayed in conversation or in a shorter written test. From an examination of such a list, therefore, the investigator is usually able to determine the general trend of the writers thought, i.e. to determine whether he is literary or scientific in his tastes, or whether he is principally occupied with the daily routine of events either in the narrow field of personal experience, or in the larger sphere of the worlds activities.
