Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on the Epistle to the Romans, Vol. 3 The Apostle uses, in illustration of this, a natural and appropriate figure - verse 17. And if some of the branches be broken off, and then, being a wild olive-tree, wert grafted in among them, and with them partakest of the root and fat ness of the olive-tree. The Church might be considered as planted, when Abraham was called. He was the root. This renders the reasoning of the Apostle clear and consis tent. To make Christ the root, introduces perplexity and confusion into it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on the Epistle to the Romans, Vol. 1 To a mind such as that of my late revered father, the epistle TO the romans could not fail to present peculiar attractions; and to the study of it he devoted a large measure of time and attention. Of such study these Lectures are a result. They were delivered to the people of his charge - most if not all of them twice - during the course of his ministry. It was his design to publish them, and they were in part prepared for the press. This is the main ground for their finding a place in this Series. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on the Epistle to the Romans, Vol. 2 By spiritual death I mean the entire loss in the soul of those principles of holiness which fitted man originally for fellowship with God as his chief joy, his happiness, his life. It is death to all those spiritual sensibilities of holy love which constituted the blessedness of the paradisaical life while man remained in his innocence, and a consequent total incapacity for the functions and enjoyments of that life. By temporal death I mean, of course, the dissolution, by whatever means effected, of the soul and the body, and the corruption of the latter in the grave, its return to the dust from which it was taken. By death eternal, I understand what is called in Scripture "the second death," the everlasting misery of the future state. A few remarks will be necessary on each of these. I. Against the idea of spiritual death being included in the curse, two objections have been urged - (1.) It has been alleged that spiritual death is nothing more than sin, and that this is therefore to make sin its own penalty; and by supposing God to inflict it makes Him its author. But here there is a double mistake. Is there no difference between falling into sin, and being left, in consequence, to a permanently depraved state of soul, a state of alienation from God and of incapacity for enjoying Him? The only question is: - Whether, in consequence of the original transgression, the nature of man was left in this state? That it was, we formerly endeavoured at great length to prove, from Scripture and from facts. Now, if this was a consequence, what else could it be than a penal and judicial consequence? Book excerpt: Excerpt from Exposition of the Epistle to the Romans, Vol. 3: With Remarks on the Commentaries of Dr. Macknight, and Profesor Moses Stuart The mercies of God, as illustrated by the reve lation of the righteousness which is received by faith, was the grand subject which had occupied Paul in the former part of this Epistle. He had announced at the beginning that he was not ashamed of the gospel of Christ; because it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth - to the Jew first and also to the Greek. This great truth he had undertaken to demonstrate, and he had done so with all the authority and force of inspiration, by exhibiting on the one hand, the state and character of man; and on the other, the depth of the riches, both of the Wisdom and knowledge of God. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on the Epistle of Paul the Apostle to the Romans, Vol. 4 Theology has its steeps and its altitudes - pin naoles far out of sight, or shooting upwardly to heaven till lost in the cloudy envelopment which surrounds them. Yet this does not hinder that there should be a most distinct and discernible path which winds around its basement, and by which the lowliest of Zion's travellers may find an ascending way, that at length when the toils of his pilgrimage are ended, will land him in a place of purest transparency, where he shall know even as he is known. There are some whose vision can carry them more aloft among the heights of ardu ous speculation. Yet let none be discouraged for there is a way of duty that may be practised and of doctrine that may be understood which is accessible to all - a way the entrance upon which requires but the union of a desirous heart with a doing hand - a union this that is often realized by the veriest babe in intellect; who, wholly unable though he be to scan the awful mysteries of a pre destinating God, yet can lift the prayer both of affection and confidence, while looking to Him in the more legible as well as more lovely aspect of a God that waiteth to be gracious. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures, Explanatory and Practical: On the Epistle of Saint Paul to the Romans The Epistle, which it is the object of the fol lowing Lectures to explain, may be regarded as forming, in some respects, the most important part of the Sacred Writings. For though all Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and we are bound to acknowledge the same divine autho rity in every portion of the sacred volume; yet it by no means derogates, either from the perfection of the Scriptures, or from the honour of that Spirit under whose immediate influence they were writ ten, to ascribe to some parts a superior excellence and importance, and to conceive of others as hav ing only a subordinate use. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Third Chapter of Paul's Epistle to the Romans: A Monograph The following Monograph on the Third Chapter of the Epistle to the Romans is respectfully and diffidently submitted to the judgement of scholarly students of the Bible. It has been a "labour of love" to the author, - a solace to his spirit amid trials which he need not particularize. Retiring from the din and strife and worry of the outer world, he entered, as by an inner gate, into the school of the Prophets and Apostles. It was like a Spiritual University. It was like a home too, - a home for the heart. Having entered, he engaged with ardour in the studies pursued. He found them soothing. He found the teachers inspiring as well inspired. But he felt peculiar attractions drawing him toward Paul. "Quid est enim Paulo rarius?" exclaims Melancthon. Surely he is a rare man, Paul. He is a rare teacher. "Nothing" is rarer. Mingling freely with the other scholars, - patristic, medieval, modern, and more modern, - whom the author found clustering around this incomparable instructor, he listened eagerly to the divine utterances that fell from his lips. He entered, too, with zest into the discussions of the pupils, when, in their respective groups, they ventilated among themselves the import of the Master's utterances.
