Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1879 edition. Excerpt: ... IV. THE VISIT TO JERUSALEM. Chapter i., 18.--Then after three years I went up to Jerusalem to see Peter, and abode with him fifteen days. Chapter ii., i.--Then fourteen years after I went up again to Jerusalem with Barnabas, and took Titus also with me." TAKING these verses as finger-posts to indicate the subject for our consideration, I will endeavour to explain the facts which St. Paul mentions in these two chapters, and point out the great doctrine which he was anxious to teach the Galatians, as well as all mankind. Immediately after his conversion and baptism St. Paul preached the gospel to the people of Damascus, and, knowing as we do that his natural and spiritual gifts were great, we can have no difficulty in believing that he must have proclaimed Christ's truth to the unbelievers there with great force and fervour. But the greater his force and fervour, the greater the opposition which he met with among the people, especially the Jews, who conspired together to give themselves no rest until they were able to kill him. How short-sighted they must have been we can well imagine; for could they have put a stop to the preaching of the gospel by simply taking away the life of Paul? Were there no other preachers? or could not God have raised up another Paul? Those who suppose that, by means of violence or murder, they could gain their object, simply deceive themselves. The design of the Jews was not realised. When it was discovered that they intended killing the apostle, he acted according to the teaching of our Saviour--" when they persecute you in one city flee ye unto another." Paul, therefore, left Damascus quietly by night, and did not at once return to Jerusalem, but went to Mount Sinai, where, fifteen hundred years before, Moses...

Book excerpt: Martin Luther's most comprehensive work on justification by faith, his commentary on St. Paul's Epistle to the Galatians is translated and edited from the Latin into a lively style, paralleling his spoken lectures. Combined with the passion and faith expressed in these lectures, the biblical foundation for the crucial doctrine of justification is underscored and expressed to a new audience. The commentary is also a historical document, a recording of a professor in a classroom in 1531 from July to December of that year, which expresses the Reformer's commitment to the good news of Jesus' death in the sinner's place, challenging the reader/hearer to compare St. Paul's theology with what he/she hears in the church today.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Other Gospels: Or Lectures on St. Paul's Epistle to the Galatians The differences which divide Catholics from those who still profess Christianity, yet remain outside the Catholic Church, are far from superficial. They have their roots in a fundamental differ ence which lies deeper down than is generally supposed. That difference is as to the Messianic or Apos tolic character and office of the Incarnate Word. Catholics and those who, while claiming the name of Christian, are not Catholics, are at issue not only as to the past aspect of the temporal mission of the Son of God, but also as to the nature of His present work on earth, and as to the mode of His present influence on the souls of men. Agreement on this fundamental issue would by the grace of God, speedily result in agreement with regard to those points of difference which lie upon the surface and more readily strike the eye. The difference is commonly supposed to con cern principally the constitution of the Christian Church, as it is the mystical Body of Christ. The writer believes that it rather concerns, and con cerns primarily, Christ Himself, as He is the Head of that Body. This conviction has led him to publish the fol lowing considerations in the hope that, in these days of inquiry and of doubt, they may aid men of good-will' on their way towards the possession of that 'peace of believing' which springs from the obedience of faith.' The lectures have in substance been delivered in the churches of the Society at Edinburgh and at Oxford. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based upon lectures delivered by Luther at the University of Wittenburg in 1531 and transcribed by his friends and admirers, this Commentary was first published in Latin in 1535. Edited by Philip S. Watson, this revised and completed English translation is based on the 'Middleton' edition of the English version of 1575. The Epistle to the Galatians was a favourite of Luther's. He called it " my own epistle, to which I have plighted my troth. It is my Katie von Bora." He found in it a source of strength for his own faith and life, and an armoury of weapons for his reforming work. He had expounded on it twice previously: in 1519, when he depended largely on St Jerome and Erasmus for his exegesis, and in 1523, when he departed from them both. In this Commentary he frequently expresses his dissent from St Jerome, and occasionally takes issue with Erasmus. He came to think very little of his earlier commentaries, but he rated his later expositions more highly. When the complete Latin edition of his works was in preparation a couple of years before his death, he said: "If they took my advice, they'd print only the books containing doctrine, like the Galatians." Luther's main theme in this text is an attack on the human propensity for self-justification and self-righteousness, of which he finds symptoms in unexpected places. It is hardly too much to say that the whole aim of his exposition of the Epistle is to make us aware of it and point us towards its antidote. This he finds in Paul's doctrine of justification by faith - faith in Christ and in God through Christ; a faith that 'carrieth us out of ourselves'; and a faith that is 'not idle' but always 'working by love'. No-one would wish to maintain that Luther's exegesis can be defended on every point in the light of modern scholarship, but that he has caught 'the spirit and veine' of the Apostle can hardly be denied; and he has much that is illuminating to say in the course of his exposition. And since the 'plague' of self-righteousness has not been banished from the world, the main theme of his Commentary is no less relevant today than it was nearly five centuries ago. John Bunyan wrote of this book: "I do prefer this book of Martin Luther upon the Galatians, excepting the Holy Bible, before all books that I have ever seen."
