Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on Physiology, Hygiene, for Hospital and Home Nursing The following lectures were delivered in connection with the S. John's Ambulance Society, and it is at the urgent request of many members of my class that I have consented to publish them. I have taken the opportunity of enlarging them, and of giving a fuller description of the more impor tant points of physiology than was possible in the space of time then allotted to me. There is no doubt that an intelligent understanding of the anatomy and the functions of the human body, enables a nurse to do her work in a much more satisfactory manner than if she is ignorant of the chief laws by which the body is governed. I trust therefore that these pages may be of some little value in refreshing the memory of those who have already studied the subject, and in helping those who have not had the opportunity of so doing. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Physiology for Nurses Some years ago the author wrote an "Elementary Physiology for Teachers," the aim of which was to give prominence to those anatomical and physiological peculiarities of children with which it is important for teachers to be acquainted, but which are seldom referred to in small text-books intended for the general reader. The present volume is an adaptation of the earlier work to the needs of nurses. Various sections whose importance was chiefly educational have been omitted; paragraphs, sections, and chapters nave been added; and in parts otherwise unaltered a good many technical terms which were unnecessary in a book for teachers but which nurses are likely to hear in the course of their training have been included. Many references to the special features of childhood have. been retained, partly because children form a considerable proportion of the patients of most nurses, and partly because so many nurses are being drawn into the service of the educational authorities. Since the publication of "Physiology for Teachers," important advances have been made in our knowledge in various departments of physiology, e.g. regarding the functions of some of the ductless glands, the part played by "hormones," and cerebral localisation. Care has therefore been taken to bring the present volume up to date. At the same time it has seemed best to adhere to orthodox teaching with respect to questions still under debate. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Book in Hygiene: A Primer of Physiology In these lessons for young children simple language is used in the presentation of such facts about the structure of the body and its functions as are necessary for clear and definite knowledge of the general laws of health, including the effects of alcohol and narcotics. This book is for the use of pupils just beginning to learn something of the care the human body requires in order to insure the full enjoyment of health. The value of a primary book upon any subject depends both upon the language used and the varied forms of appeal to the child's mind, in order that his interest may be aroused. In this book there are few complex sentences. There is, also, such frequent alter nation in story, written exercise, and observation, picture, memory, and reading lessons that the subject-matter cannot become trite. The lessons are so logically arranged, and so pedagogically co-ordinated, that every sentence, every ques tion, every picture, every poem, every written exercise, forms a vital part in the presentation of hygienic law as an educational whole, in a form most readily comprehended by the child. Anatomy, strictly speaking, is a science the study of which requires the more mature mind of the advanced high school or college student. Only such basal facts of thebody's structure are here presented as are necessary for a clear understanding of the laws of health. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Advanced Lessons in Human Physiology and Hygiene: For Grammar, Ungraded, and High Schools Exercise, habits of life, cleanliness, ventilation, extraneous in uences upon health, and the means of restoring lost vigor and of combating disease. Special attention is given to the nature and effects of alcohol and other narcotics, thus meeting the requirements, in this respect, of the laws relating to such study. The demand for school instruction regarding the prevention of contagious diseases is met in a care fully prepared chapter ou that subject. Other chapters on first aid to the injured and on the proper care of the sick, giving concise directions easily comprehended by everybody, add still further to the practical value of the work. Throughout the volume the author has endeavored to avoid technicalities and to present every statement in such a way that the youngest pupil may readily comprehend its meaning. The audience which he has had in mind is not one of medical students, but is composed of young people in grammar, ungraded, and high schools, who study these subjects in order to acquire intelligent ideas regarding the preservation of their own health, the development of their strength, and the general betterment of their lives. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essential Lessons in Human Physiology and Hygiene: For Schools IN the preparation of the following chapters on hu man physiology and hygiene, the author has attempted to present only such facts as are essential to the most practical knowledge of the subject - that is, such facts as people in the common walks of life most need to know, and such facts as all can remember and make use of whenever occasion demands. The plan of the work is such as adapts it to the needs, not only of in termediate classes in graded schools, but of the large number of pupils in the country schools where the time which can be devoted to the study of this subject is necessarily limited. As a general rule, an effort has been made to speak briefly and to the point, without unnecessary verbiage; and, wherever such could be done without sacrificing accuracy or clearness of state ment, rigid condensation has been practiced. It is believed, however, that this will not detract from the interest of the narrative or from the practical worth of the lessons. Many interesting facts, especially in anatomy, have been ruled out as not being knowledge of value to those for whom the book is intended. As the purpose and end of all such studies is the inculca tion of rules and principles for the preservation of health, anatomy and physiology are throughout made subservient to hygiene and hygienic precepts. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Health Reader: Physiology Hygiene While it has seemed advisable in some places to use words which children do not understand, their meanings have been given so that they may know what they are reading about. The dry details of the usual form of study on this subject have been entirely eliminated. The child who reads this book properly under competent instructors will have a new view of life, a better under standing of his environment, and a clearer conception of what is good for his health. He will be asking himself continually, when new duties and new pleasures present themselves, or new foods come to his attention, this question: Is it good for me? This book was released on 2009 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The WHO Guidelines on Hand Hygiene in Health Care provide health-care workers (HCWs), hospital administrators and health authorities with a thorough review of evidence on hand hygiene in health care and specific recommendations to improve practices and reduce transmission of pathogenic microorganisms to patients and HCWs. The present Guidelines are intended to be implemented in any situation in which health care is delivered either to a patient or to a specific group in a population. Therefore, this concept applies to all settings where health care is permanently or occasionally performed, such as home care by birth attendants. Definitions of health-care settings are proposed in Appendix 1. These Guidelines and the associated WHO Multimodal Hand Hygiene Improvement Strategy and an Implementation Toolkit (http://www.who.int/gpsc/en/) are designed to offer health-care facilities in Member States a conceptual framework and practical tools for the application of recommendations in practice at the bedside. While ensuring consistency with the Guidelines recommendations, individual adaptation according to local regulations, settings, needs, and resources is desirable. This extensive review includes in one document sufficient technical information to support training materials and help plan implementation strategies. The document comprises six parts.
