Book Synopsis Lectures on Amenability by : Volker Runde
Download or read book Lectures on Amenability written by Volker Runde and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2002-01-10 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The notion of amenability has its origins in the beginnings of modern measure theory: Does a finitely additive set function exist which is invariant under a certain group action? Since the 1940s, amenability has become an important concept in abstract harmonic analysis (or rather, more generally, in the theory of semitopological semigroups). In 1972, B.E. Johnson showed that the amenability of a locally compact group G can be characterized in terms of the Hochschild cohomology of its group algebra L^1(G): this initiated the theory of amenable Banach algebras. Since then, amenability has penetrated other branches of mathematics, such as von Neumann algebras, operator spaces, and even differential geometry. Lectures on Amenability introduces second year graduate students to this fascinating area of modern mathematics and leads them to a level from where they can go on to read original papers on the subject. Numerous exercises are interspersed in the text.

Book Synopsis Peroxides, Superoxides, and Ozonides of Alkali and Alkaline Earth Metals by : I. I. Volnov
Download or read book Peroxides, Superoxides, and Ozonides of Alkali and Alkaline Earth Metals written by I. I. Volnov and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the early 1930's, Soviet chemists have played a lead ing role in the study of unfamiliar oxidation state compounds of the peroxide, superoxide, and ozonide types. Interest in the alkali and alkaline earth metal derivatives is now widespread and diverse, and numerous practical applications of these com pounds have evolved, ranging from their use as air revitaliza tion materials in space cabins to their use in compounding semiconductor materials. Professor Vol'nov is eminently qualified to write this monograph since for many years he has been a leading investi gator and prolific writer in the field of peroxide, superoxide, and ozonide chemistry. He has succeeded in presenting a lucid and detailed discussion of past work, the present state, and the future potential of this area of unfamiliar oxidation state chemistry. Of particular interest is Professor Vol 'nov's extensive compilation of available thermodynamic, kinetic, and structural data for the alkali and alkaline earth peroxides, superoxides, and ozonides. In addition, he has reviewed the known methods of synthesis, as well as the practical applications for which these compounds are suited. This monograph will be of interest and value to chemists, not only for the information it imparts, but equally for the information it does not impart, thereby illuminating the re search paths and investigation which must be undertaken in order to increase our knowledge concerning the chemistry of this important class of chemical compounds.
Book Synopsis Logic Programming and Automated Reasoning by : Andrei Voronkov
Download or read book Logic Programming and Automated Reasoning written by Andrei Voronkov and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1993-06-29 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: LPAR is an international conference series aimed at bringing together researchers interested in logic programming and automated reasoning. The research in logic programming grew out of the research in automated reasoning in the early 1970s. Later, the implementation techniques known from logic programming were used in implementing theorem proving systems. Results from both fields applied to deductive databases. This volume contains the proceedings of LPAR '93, which was organized by the Russian Association for Logic Programming. The volume contains 35 contributed papers selected from 84 submissions, together with an invited paper by Peter Wegner entitled "Reasoning versus modeling in computer science".
Book Synopsis Machine Learning: ECML-93 by : Pavel B. Brazdil
Download or read book Machine Learning: ECML-93 written by Pavel B. Brazdil and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1993-03-23 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of the Eurpoean Conference on Machine Learning (ECML-93), continuing the tradition of the five earlier EWSLs (European Working Sessions on Learning). The aim of these conferences is to provide a platform for presenting the latest results in the area of machine learning. The ECML-93 programme included invited talks, selected papers, and the presentation of ongoing work in poster sessions. The programme was completed by several workshops on specific topics. The volume contains papers related to all these activities. The first chapter of the proceedings contains two invited papers, one by Ross Quinlan and one by Stephen Muggleton on inductive logic programming. The second chapter contains 18 scientific papers accepted for the main sessions of the conference. The third chapter contains 18 shorter position papers. The final chapter includes three overview papers related to the ECML-93 workshops.

This book was released on 1993-09-21 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents the proceedings of the 6th Portuguese Conference on Artificial Intelligence, EPIA '93, organized by the Portuguese Artificial Intelligence Association. Like the last two conferences in this series, it was run as an international event with strict requirements as to the quality of accepted submissions. Fifty-one submissions were receivedfrom 9 countries, the largest numbers coming from Portugal (18), Germany (10), and France (8). The volume contains 25 selected papers, together with 7 poster abstracts and one invited lecture: "Organizations as complex, dynamic design problems" by L. Gasser, I. Hulthage, B. Leverich, J. Lieb, and A. Majchrzak, all from the University of Southern California. The papersare grouped into parts on: distributed artificial intelligence, natural language processing, knowledge representation, logic programming, non-standard logics, automated reasoning, constraints, planning, and learning.
