Book excerpt: In the lecture series starting today author want to give a survey of a field of aerodynamics which has for a number of years been attracting an ever growing interest. The subject is the theory of flows with friction, and, within that field, particularly the theory of friction layers, or boundary layers. A great many considerations of aerodynamics are based on the ideal fluid, that is the frictionless incompressibility and fluid. By neglect of compressibility and friction the extensive mathematical theory of the ideal fluid, (potential theory) has been made possible. Actual liquids and gases satisfy the condition of incomressibility rather well if the velocities are not extremely high or, more accurately, if they are small in comparison with sonic velocity. For air, for instance, the change in volume due to compressibility amounts to about 1 percent for a velocity of 60 meters per second. The hypothesis of absence of friction is not satisfied by any actual fluid; however, it is true that most technically important fluids, for instance air and water, have a very small friction coefficient and therefore behave in many cases almost like the ideal frictionless fluid. Many flow phenomena, in particular most cases of lift, can be treated satisfactorily, - that is, the calculations are in good agreement with the test results, -under the assumption of frictionless fluid. However, the calculations with frictionless flow show a very serious deficiency; namely, the fact, known as d'Alembert's paradox, that in frictionless flow each body has zero drag whereas in actual flow each body experiences a drag of greater or smaller magnitude. For a long time the theory has been unable to bridge this gap between the theory of frictionless flow and the experimental findings about actual flow. The cause of this fundamental discrepancy is the viscosity which is neglected in the theory of ideal fluid; however, in spite of its extraordinary smallness it is decisive for the course of the flow

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the major achievements in fluid mechanics in the last quarter of the twentieth century has been the development of an asymptotic description of perturbations to boundary layers known generally as 'triple deck theory'. These developments have had a major impact on our understanding of laminar fluid flow, particularly laminar separation. It is also true that the theory rests on three quarters of a century of development of boundary layer theory which involves analysis, experimentation and computation. All these parts go together, and to understand the triple deck it is necessary to understand which problems the triple deck resolves and which computational techniques have been applied. This book presents a unified account of the development of laminar boundary layer theory as a historical study together with a description of the application of the ideas of triple deck theory to flow past a plate, to separation from a cylinder and to flow in channels. The book is intended to provide a graduate level teaching resource as well as a mathematically oriented account for a general reader in applied mathematics, engineering, physics or scientific computation.

Book excerpt: Second Enhanced Edition Suitable for advanced-level courses or an independent study in fluid mechanics, this text by an expert in the field provides the basic aspects of laminar-to-turbulent flow transition in boundary layers. Logically organized into three major parts, the book covers pre- and post-transitional flow, transitional flow, and several advanced topics in periodically disturbed transitional flow. Some of the subjects covered within the book include high-frequency unsteady laminar flow, turbulent flow, natural transition, bypass transition, turbulent spot theory, turbulent spot kinematics and production, correlations for the onset and rate of transition, global and conditional averaging, transitional flow models, wakeinduced transition, multimode transition, and separated-flow transition. Containing some 202 figures (all drawn by the author), 28 tables, 12 appendices, a supplement on tensors, and an extensive bibliography, the 415 page book provides a wealth of data and information about the subject.

Book excerpt: Turbulent Flow and Boundary Layer Theory: Selected Topics and Solved Problems explains fundamental concepts of turbulent flow with boundary layer analysis. A general introduction to turbulent flow familiarizes the reader with the mechanics of turbulence in fluid flow in both nature and engineering applications. The book also explains related concepts including transient flow, methods for controlling transients, turbulent models and dynamic equations for unsteady flow through closed conduits. The contents of the book are designed to help both students and teachers in carrying out turbulent flow analysis and solving problems in engineering and hydraulic applications. Key Features - all the basic concepts in turbulent flow are clearly identified and presented in a simple manner with illustrative and practical examples. - includes a self-contained approach to the subject, indicating prerequisite materials and information needed from courses. - each chapter also has a set of questions and problems to test the student’s power of comprehending the topics. - provides an exhaustive appendix on interesting examples Turbulent Flow and Boundary Layer Theory: Selected Topics and Solved Problems a useful textbook for students of engineering. It also serves as a quick reference for professionals, researchers and project consultants involved with processes that require turbulent flow and boundary layer methods analysis.
