Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lecture on Submarine Boats, and Their Application to Torpedo Operations In this lecture I have endeavored give a general history of the science of submarine navigation; giving detailed descriptions [when I have been able to obtain them] of special apparatus designed for the purpose, and a general idea of others where my researches have not been so successful. The greater portion of the information on this subject, which has found its way into print, is vague in the extreme; probably from the fact that it is a subject of very little interest to the general reader and only sought after by the curious, who, in most cases, would pre fer the accounts of marvelous results attained rather than the dry detail of the mechanical devices necessary to obtain them. As re gards the lack of other sources of information, both in times past and present; it may probably be ascribed either to illiteracy on the part of the inventors or a desire of keeping their knowledge to them selves. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Submarine Torpedo Boat: Its Characteristics and Modern Development To those familiar with this type of craft there is nothing remarkable in just the mere mileage covered by the Deutschland on this voyage, but the performance of this vessel is spectacular because it has succeeded in leaving a well blockaded port and traversed waters abounding in hostile craft undetected to the end. It is very difficult at this time to obtain any exact or reliable information as to the real dimensions of this vessel. It has been variously given out in widely conflicting statements. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Torpedo War, and Submarine Explosions N View of the prominent part played in the present World War by torpedoes and submarines, the subject of our extra N 0. 35 is peculiarly timely. The original of 1810 is very scarce, only one copy having been sold at auction in many years: nor are copies to be found in any but a few of our libraries. Fulton's claims for his invention have been fully substantiated and some of his predictions, made more than a century ago, are remarkably interesting, in view of the events of the past five months. His estimate of our population in 1920 has already been exceeded in fact, and only his plan of affix ing torpedoes to their prey by means of harpoons seems - for it was made in the days of wooden ships - fantastic, in these days of iron clads. He could not foresee that almost exactly a century would elapse before his invention would be extensively used though he cautiously says it is impossible to foresee to what de gree torpedoes may be improved and rendered useful. In the J oline collection of autograph letters, sold this month, was an extremely interesting letter of Fulton's, addressed to Gen. William Duane. A part reads. The construction of submarine boats where I have given a detailed description of how I think such boats ought to be constructed, and which principles ought to be the guiding ones. Special attention has been paid to previous experiences, and the conclusions arrived at are the result of very careful study and calculations. In fact, the design, as described in its main features, is one worked out in the course of three years, while I studied Naval Architecture at the Royal Naval College in Greenwich. The design must, however, be regarded merely as an illustration. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Cruising up and down the U.S. eastern seaboard, they sank 259 ships, littering the waters with cargo and bodies. As astonished civilians witnessed explosions from American beaches, fighting men dubbed the area "Torpedo Junction." And while the U.S. Navy failed to react, a handful of Coast Guard sailors scrambled to the front lines. Outgunned and out-maneuvered, they heroically battled the deadliest fleet of submarines ever launched. Never was Germany closer to winning the war. In a moving ship-by-ship account of terror and rescue at sea, Homer Hickam chronicles a little-known saga of courage, ingenuity, and triumph in the early years of World War II. From nerve-racking sea duels to the dramatic ordeals of sailors and victims on both sides of the battle, Hickam dramatically captures a war we had to win--because this one hit terrifyingly close to home.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Submarines, Mines and Torpedoes in the War Warfare has become so largely a matter of science that in order to arrive at an intelligent understanding of the naval situation or of the military campaigns in the Great European War, a knowledge of the scientific factors contributing to victory or defeat is essential. And in this volume it has been my aim not only to review the actual fighting underseas, but also to present a compendium of information relative to the submarine fleets and arms of the great Naval Powers engaged; which I venture to hope will prove of present interest on account of the prominent part played by the underwater fighting ships and appliances, and of permanent historic value as being the first work to describe the vast preparations and curious events leading to the new "Submarine Phase" in naval warfare.
