Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lecture Notes on Light If the importance of having good notes is once accepted, the question then arises as to the form that they should take. Should they be written or printed notes? For a good many years notes on Physics were dictated to the boys at Gresham's School. It was found, however, that this took up a considerable amount of valuable time, which could be saved by having the notes printed and copies supplied to the boys. The result has been a gain of fifty per cent. In the amount of ground covered. At the same time it has been found that the subject matter has been acquired by the boys just as well as through the dictated notes, perhaps even better. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lecture Notes on Mechanics, Sound and Light The following pages include most of the topics treated in the first Course in Physics in the University. They serve merely the purpose of texts for lectures. No attempt has been made to secure fullness nor to indicate the illustrations accompanying the lectures. Such topics have been selected as appear most important, and an effort has been made to put them in logical relation to one another. The matter here in print will relieve the student of a large part of the labor of taking notes; and, it is hoped, will secure for him more accurate statements than he would otherwise obtain. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes of a Course of Nine Lectures on Light: Delivered at the Royal Institution of Great Britain, April 8 June 3, 1869 These notes were prepared for the use of those Who attended my Lectures on Light last year, and were not intended for further publication. Enquiries and requests regarding them from teachers and students Who have read them, cause me now to think that the Notes may be useful beyond their contemplated limits. The Messrs. Longman have therefore undertaken their publication in a very cheap form. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold. Book excerpt: This book introduces physics students and teachers to the historical development of the kinetic theory of gases, by providing a collection of the most important contributions by Clausius, Maxwell and Boltzmann, with introductory surveys explaining their significance. In addition, extracts from the works of Boyle, Newton, Mayer, Joule, Helmholtz, Kelvin and others show the historical context of ideas about gases, energy and irreversibility. In addition to five thematic essays connecting the classical kinetic theory with 20th century topics such as indeterminism and interatomic forces, there is an extensive international bibliography of historical commentaries on kinetic theory, thermodynamics, etc. published in the past four decades. The book will be useful to historians of science who need primary and secondary sources to be conveniently available for their own research and interpretation, along with the bibliography which makes it easier to learn what other historians have already done on this subject.

Book excerpt: Samson Abramsky’s wide-ranging contributions to logical and structural aspects of Computer Science have had a major influence on the field. This book is a rich collection of papers, inspired by and extending Abramsky’s work. It contains both survey material and new results, organised around six major themes: domains and duality, game semantics, contextuality and quantum computation, comonads and descriptive complexity, categorical and logical semantics, and probabilistic computation. These relate to different stages and aspects of Abramsky’s work, reflecting its exceptionally broad scope and his ability to illuminate and unify diverse topics. Chapters in the volume include a review of his entire body of work, spanning from philosophical aspects to logic, programming language theory, quantum theory, economics and psychology, and relating it to a theory of unification of sciences using dual adjunctions. The section on game semantics shows how Abramsky’s work has led to a powerful new paradigm for the semantics of computation. The work on contextuality and categorical quantum mechanics has been highly influential, and provides the foundation for increasingly widely used methods in quantum computing. The work on comonads and descriptive complexity is building bridges between currently disjoint research areas in computer science, relating Structure to Power. The volume also includes a scientific autobiography, and an overview of the contributions. The outstanding set of contributors to this volume, including both senior and early career academics, serve as testament to Samson Abramsky’s enduring influence. It will provide an invaluable and unique resource for both students and established researchers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book takes the reader on an enchanting journey into the lives of fourteen genius scientists who lived during the enlightenment period to the mid-twentieth century. They suffered ethnic, gender, sexual prejudices, cultural and religious taboos, poverty, and epidemics. Most lived a very short life. And yet, their intuition and perseverance prevailed, and their pioneering discoveries changed the world. Their tragic lives faded away over time. However, the fruits of their work, including computer and nuclear technologies, space science, artificial intelligence, and genetic engineering, have shaped our lives. When we look back, their inspirational life stories appear more fictional than real. Each story takes the reader into varying times, places, customs, and environments. The book should interest not only a science nerd but also an armchair reader who loves fiction.

Book excerpt: For two years before and after the 1948 Communist Revolution, David Kidd lived in Peking, where he married the daughter of an aristocratic Chinese family. "I used to hope," he writes, "that some bright young scholar on a research grant would write about us and our Chinese friends before it was too late and we were all dead and gone, folding into the darkness the wonder that had been our lives." Here Kidd himself brings that wonder to life.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Early English Colonies: A Summary of the Lecture; With Additional Notes and Illustrations Delivered at the Richmond Auditorium, Virginia, October 4, 1907 The greater part of the following manuscripts were copied in order to facilitate the Bishop of London's labour in preparing his work for his visit to America, and the mss. Notes were taken there. They also are only part of a greater number examined by the Bishop before the journey commenced. When the Bishops of America asked by the letter from the Convention for the Bishop of London's Speech, which was delivered from the notes and documents quoted herein, the Bishop requested the author to put the whole into shape as far as possible in order to illus trate the standpoint, rather than attempt to reproduce the words which were used on that occasion. To do this, in the first place, there is the outline of the Bishop of London's Lecture, and the documents quoted are copied to illustrate it. Some of these - as, for instance, the Bishop's Commission from King George - have been already reproduced in the Press in America, but where they were thought worthy of more permanent shape they are included. In other cases similar documents which might throw fresh light on the love of the Mother Country, and the efforts of the Church of England for the colonies, and for the English overseas, have been included, so as to answer more fully the request of the Bishops of America, in spirit rather than in the letter.
